Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

I have been experiencing Kernel Panics every month or so since 10.10.3. (5 panics since April). I have a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro now running 10.10.4 with an Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Genius bar diagnostic test was clean, reinstalled OS X. When that didn't work, I erased, repartitioned and reinstalled. Still have the issue.

The only thing I can find in the logs that is common to every kernel panic is that the last loaded and/or unloaded kext in every case has been:

Just upgraded to the newest public beta 10.10.5 , released today. It seems that Apple has updated the Intel HD4000 kext with this update. Give it a try

Another spark of hope! Can anyone tell me how this works with installing beta versions. I am guessing I cannot easily go back to public release versions after installing a beta version?

I've compared the AppleIntelHD4000Graphics.kext from the last beta (Version 10.6.31) with the release of yesterday (10.6.33).

So I can confirm, that with the latest beta the HD4000 Driver was updated by Apple.

AppleIntelHD4000Graphics.kext in 10.10.4 is version 10.6.3.1 and has a last-modified date of 2014-09-25, which suggests it hasn't been modified since 10.10.0. It's possible that a change elsewhere in the codebase caused it to start acting up in 10.10.3, but the driver itself wasn't updated in that release.

Same symptoms as most others - spontaneous reboots, quite frequent KILLER BEACHBALL, with some screen pixelation on shutdown, etc etc.

BUT...

I dont have Intel Video, this machine has AMD Radeon HD 6970M video card.

And, I just found out my "DHJW" serial is covered under the Apple Replacement Program for that video card!!!

I seriously suspect that some new tweak in 10.10.3 exercises something 'unusual' in my (very probably bad) video card.

I am making an appointment to bring it back to the Apple repair shop ( two hours drive from here )

It is a pity they didn't think to check for the video card recall TWO WEEKS AGO when I made the drive there....
