Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

A little update. I filed a bug report at https://bugreport.apple.com/ and was surprised to find that it is treated very carefully by Apple. After sending in a panic report they now ask for a core dump. This implies that I activate a second Mac as a core dump server and have it running while the kernel panic appears. Seems like a job for my old MacBook... I will keep you updated.

I have a mac-mini late 2012, started sudden restarts after recent update from Apple, I think restarts increased after updating firmware (which came from App Store updates)

I was getting random spontaneous reboots CONSTANTLY, ever since about 10.10.3 or thereabouts .

Very seldom was there a kernel panic, and like many - couldn't find any obvious log traces (Apple logs are full of various failures, hard to tell if they correlate to crashing or not!)

I did notice the symptom is similar to that cited in some semi-secret Apple video card recalls. Arm-wrestled support into having this done for me, and since the GPU replacement, I have not yet had a single spontaneous reboot. (My iMac was covered in the serial number range of some with known bad GPUS)

The (suspected bad) GPU did not fail the GPU warranty replacement tests, ( Passed MRI, VST, ASD, OS & EFI) actually none of the hardware ever failed an Apple Diagnostic test ( and it was tested multiple times). But they went ahead and changed the GPU anyway, and I haven't had a spontaneous reboot since!

COINCIDENCE???!?!? I dunno! but you might want to look into it. I strongly suspect that they 'tweaked' (probably by accident!!!) some obscure video code in Yosemite that now 'actively disturbs' hitherto latent 'Bad Video Chips'.

Incidentally - spontaneous reboots were not the only problem I was having "ONLY since Yosemite". I was also getting all-too-frequent beach balling, and Finder crashes, leading to totally unresponsive system. And guess what, I still get those issues now. 😟

That's because it isn't meant for you. I'm not sure what it is. It may just be a artifact of the Jive forums that is not used by ASC. Apple doesn't write the hosting software. It is created for Apple by the folks who make Jive forum software.

The the moderators may have a better answer, but I haven't ever seen them respond directly.

10.10.4 crashed my MBA every couple of days so bad, I had to do a safe start to get it working again. Got the flickering of coloured pixel strings as well. Didn't even try the new beta.

I have the opportunity to test a new MBA 2015 right now. It is on 10.10.5 and only a few days old. Guess what? I use the same hardware setup and the new MBA boots to the right display after initial setup.

No crashes so far. No flickering. No hangs.

Due to the fact that a lot of users with the HD4000 are observing similar issues I'd like to think it has something to do with the drivers or a bad chip. Or maybe even both. Additionally my MBA 2012 had a couple of other problems. Yosemite finally killed it.

I have all the above described symptoms, a late 2012 Mini with 16 GB RAM. Flickering and almost daily random kernel panics. Just updated to 10.10.5, and I suspect it made the problem worse. Had three crashes just this morning. Just like the BAD OLD DAYS of OS9.

My Late 2012 Mac Mini is also having increasingly frequent kernel panics, with report call stacks relating to the graphics card. This hasn't happened (until the recent past) since I bought the machine.

What's the best way of bringing this to the attention of Apple? I am a paid-up apple developer, so I could file a bug report, but I've never done that for Apple so I'm not sure if I'd be raising it the correct way.

I just installed 10.10.5 here too (yesterday).

After few hours using today, the blinking bars returned.

No kernel panics at the moment, at least.

Hello, everyone

I had 10.10.2 working perfectly 1 month ago. Then I installed a SSD in the place of my superdrive and the blinking bar+greyscreen started to happen. At first I though it was a bad installation of SSD or something, but with this thread I just found out its because of 10.10.4! Because when i formatted my Mac, i installed the latest version of Yosemite.

My Mac: Macbook 13" Mid 2012, Intel HD4000

My symptoms:

- Everyday -> blinking random small bars (they disappear but changing desktop or something)

- Once a week -> random screen freeze with gliches (the screen is not completed freeze, it jumps in a infinite loop)

- Once a week -> random grey screen

- Once in 2 weeks -> random cold restart

Every time this happens, I send the report to Apple. I didn't knew about this Mac problems, I hope they fix it, its a shame! It's only on Mid 2012 models so for I've seen.

Update - been 2 weeks since the GPU replacement ( as you may recall, my mid-2011 iMac passed ALL the hardware tests, but as it was in the suspect serial number range, they went ahead and replaced it s video card under the iMac video card warranty recall program anyway) - and NOT A SINGLE SPONTANEOUS REBOOT, NOR "KILLEr bEACHBALL withScreen pixellation ARTifacts" SINCE.

And I can confirm that the machine was rock-solid under Mavericks ( and before!) so it must have been some tiny change in 10.10.3&10.10.4 that "snarked out" my decrepit bad video card. Maybe in 10.10.3 they changed some driver code to use a different ( bad, but previously un-used) register???

Who knows? All I know is that changing out the card made that "several times daily spontaneous rebooting" problem go away.

I did still have frequent random killer beachball (without pixellation) issues after the GPU card replacement - but that has apparently been miraculously solved by COMPLETELY DISABLING ALL iCloud Services. It's been a week since I have disabled all iCloud services, and not a single beachball has reared its ugly head since :-)

At this point I am completely reluctant to EVER do another OS X update. TWO MONTHS, this workstation has been disabled. FIVE TIMES it got wiped clean and OS X re-installed. THREE(Two Hours by Highway) trips to the Apple Store.

On the bright side, thanks to my hunch "maybe its a bad video card" ( THANKS ENTIRELY TO READING THIS THREAD!) and also thanks to my hunch about disabling iCloud - at least it's not a five-thousand dollar paperweight any more ( for the time being...)

I can confirm, starting yesterday I still get blinking bars.

No kernel panics for the moment but while I was working I was automagically logged out from my account the day after I installed 10.10.5 – it happened only one time for the moment. Better that a restart but still annoying!

I got my first kernel panic on 10.10.5 yesterday! no blinking bars so far k.p seems less each 5 days or so but sure still there.

did you give a try to El Capitan? it seems like the only hope for us,
