Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

I had a flickering problem in MBP's panel while was working in an external monitor. This is the only flickering issue after a clean install of 10.11.

Nothing happens so far with 10.11.1.

Could you please check your Console.app for DiagnosticMessages in displaypolicyd.log like:

I have the issue only on my internal screen. When you connect an external screen on the Macbook Pro the nvidia GPU takes over.

I also thought that no issues in Windows is a clear indication for a software issue. Now that I think of it again, actually the bootcamp drivers deactivate the Intel GPU, if I'm not mistaken. That means only nvidia too.

First off, I am using a Macbook Pro mid-2012. I just did a clean install of 10.11.1 and the issue still exists. What happens is my external monitor will randomly turn on and off (like it is loosing connection as if it was unplugged and plugged back in). Eventually if I continue to use with that happening, I also get artifacts showing up (like the ones in the thread). I have tried everything (reset SMC/PRAM, Diag tests, had logic board replaced, tried different connectors) and nothing fixed the issue. I was hoping El Cap would fix it, but it didn't. Unfortunately I didn't test prior to 10.10.3, so I don't know if it existed or not before that update with the new video drivers. I put a report in to Apple and they said they would report it, but I have no fix. The only ways I found to prevent the external monitor from going off is to turn down the resolution of the external display or don't use it. That seems like a waste of an expensive external display (Dell U3014).

Now with that known, if I look at DiagnosticMessages in displaypolicyd.log I see only this:

Now as far as the nvidia GPU taking over or dual GPU, this system does not have it, only has the integrated Intel 4000 HD.

When I use bootcamp and boot into Windows 7, I do not have any issues at all. As far as I am aware, windows updated the Intel video drivers multiple times, so it is accessing the video chip directly. This all leads me to believe the issue is software based, most likely the Mac OS X Intel 4000 video drivers, or it is a chipset defect, maybe in my case something with connecting a high resolution display into the Thunderport using DisplayPort. I don't know for sure.

I followed this forum thread because I was getting those screen artifacts very bad in Yosemite, but I do admit I noticed them less in El Cap. Some kind of software issue does exist and everything I can think of I tried, and my only option right now is to use Windows 7 until Apple fixes the issue.

Quick question: Since the thread is on 'Cold Restarts' - have you experienced any system crashes (i. e. machine suddenly reboots) so far while you were experiencing the flicker issue?

No it doesn't crash, but the artifacts eventually get so bad I am forced to reboot. The main reason I followed this thread and replied here is because a lot of people talked about the common thing being the Intel 4000 video chipset, which is what I think is attributed to my issue. This was the only thread I could find that had similar issues I was experiencing, and people coming up with similar conclusions.

I was just asking if you saw crashes too. Had you said you experienced any with 10.11.1 that would have been frustrating as n748 added a pointer to apple's list of fixed issues included in the recent update. This list actually looks very promising. I set my machine back to automatic switching between i and n and since the update I didn't have any crashes anymore so far. Well, of course, we need to wait for some more 'testing time' to pass until we can finally say case closed on the system crash issue.

These updates are mostly security updates. Do we experience this because of security issues?

They address memory corruptions existed in the CoreGraphics and kernel by improved memory handling, but what do you mean testing now...?

2 days with 10.11.1 --- No crashes. No flickering.

Menu bar items: dropbox, TG pro, 1Password, Little Snitch

No crashes, not often flickering (one - tow times a week), Mac mini late 2012 i7 tow 24" monitors, icons running in the menubar :

- Macs Fan Control

- Logitech Gaming Software (mouse driver)

- Dash

- Drop Box

plus some of the Apple icons (clock and date, wifi, language, sound, bluetooth and time machine)

"usually I shutdown computer every night it's mean that I start the system at lest once a day" I mention that because I notes that sometimes flickering appear after starting the computer and if it happens it will usually repeat during this time while I am working! So if I notes flickering after starting I restart the computer one more time and usually like that it's free flickering day! I might be wrong I just share my experience.

I've been experiencing these issues since 10.10.3 on my Mid 2012 MacBook 15" (classic version). The most common are flickering in top left corner, artifacts on wallpaper, and kernel panics. The flickering stops once I click on it, the artifacts go away after I change the wallpaper, and kernel panics all have random reasons for happening when I'd check the console logs. I've already ran diagnostics to test my RAM and SSD, and both came back clean. Submitted logs to Apple, and they ended up closing the reports with no resolution. The only way to get around this is to disable graphics auto switching in power settings, and use the Nvidia graphics instead of Intel's. This obviously won't work for everyone, since some systems only have the Intel graphics.

Here are things I've tested: Installed 10.10 and upgraded to 10.10.2, and used the system for a month with no issues. As soon as 10.10.4 came out, I upgraded to it, and the flickering and kernel panic returned a day later. I decided to do a clean install of 10.10.4, and as soon as I booted into desktop I got a kernel panic about 15 minutes later. I ended up turning off Intel graphics, and waited until 10.10.5. After .5 came out, I tried it, and started getting same symptoms, so at that point I gave up on using the Intel graphics, and started using Nvidia's, while waiting for El Capitan. Turning transparency on or off didn't help.

Once El Capitan was released, I tried installing it, and experienced flickering a day later. I've also experienced a couple of complete system freezes (not like previous kernel panics), but I am not sure if that was due to the OSX itself, or incompatible software I was using (more on this later). The only way to get around this was to disable Intel's graphics. Tried a clean install of 10.11.1, and had the same results with flickering, but no freezes or kernel panics yet.

The flickering most commonly occurs when I'm using Firefox with YouTube w/ HTML5 playback. Kernel panics also occurred during the Firefox with YouTube use. The two system freezes occurred on 10.11 when I was using a beta version of Firefox 42, but hasn't happened since a more recent update came out. I also see some flickering in VLC player, but it happens for a split second from time to time.

Welcome 😐 and thanks for your detailed contribution. The flickering mostly occurs on youtube HTML5 for me too.

Is there any specific menubar icons that you have activated?

Same problem of random freeze - kernel panic - restart on Apple Mac mini 2.6 GHz 1TB Fusion drive with 16 GB RAM (late 2012) since Mac OS X 10.10.3 or so until current (10.10.5 build 14F1021).

No problem before. No problem with other Mac models like iMac with similar configuration. Resetting PRAM and SMC did not fix it. Disk Utility and DiskWarrior show that Mac is OK.

Usually the kernel panic hits while browsing the web with Safari, but other times at other times and even one or two seconds after the Mac has shut down (I shut down the Mac each day). The BSD process name corresponding to current thread is (for the latest ".panic" Console files:

kernel_task

CalendarAgent

Finder

kernel_task

com.apple.WebKit

init

How to fix it?

I usually don't run anything other than MenuMeters. Like I said, it happened even when I had a clean installation, meaning nothing was on the system except 10.10.4. As soon as I booted up after setting the system up (logging in to iCloud, setting up Find My Mac, etc. screens), I was browsing through my System Preferences, saw flickering, and then a few moments later it restarted with a kernel panic. I don't think the issues I'm experiencing have anything to do with menubar icons.

Some months ago in this discussion we find out here, that animated menu bar items, especially colored animated menu bar items in connection with an intel HD 4000 graphic card are related to the flickering effect.

If you disable all animated color menu bar items you solve the bigger part of the flickering effect. Sometimes there could be a little flickering effect but very, very much rarer. I read, that the guys from Bartender found a workarround for this problem, if you move the color animated menu bar item in the bartender bar, but because Im not use Bartender, I cant check this.

MenuMeter ist not the only affected menu bar item, same problem - for example - with network monitor from Little Snitch, iStat Menus ans so on, its a system bug/graphical driver bug or any in this direction, not an bug of the menu bar apps.

So disable MenuMeters and the flickering is largely no longer an greater issue.date
