Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

I contacted with LittleSnitch dev team and they answered that our problem is hard to track. It seems in fact to occur with Intel HD Graphics 4000 but its hard to say what exactly causes these glitches. There are some bugs on OS X 10.10 Yosemite with high cpu load on the WindowServer process with animated menu bar icons, but they haven't heard of these with OS X 10.11 El Capitan so far.

They suggest to deactivate the Little Snitch Preferences > Monitor > Show network activity in menu bar option.

This the best solution for the moment.

just FYI... no crashes anymore since I tied my graphics back again to the nVidia one... And I even don't think it's the automatic switching, I believe it's the Intel gfx hardware or its driver that has a problem in one way or another...

Yes. As it was described in this thread in several places, disabling Graphics Switching is the only workaround for Macs with dual GPU. Macs with only an Intel HD 4000 GPU don't have this option.

Just to make 100% sure: Are there any users experiencing Kernel panics and flickering issues that do NOT USE the Little Snitch firewall?

Probably it was an answer to your "inappropriate" post. I think that it was taking place another interesting poll in this thread.

Anyway I would like to mention again that Little Snitch is not responsible for the bug. Probably just causes high cpu loads for some reason and the existing Intel driver fails to manage.

I had a flickering experience today in the MBP panel while I was working with several MSword docs and Adobe pdfs in the external monitor as a primary screen. (no little snitch installed). Every time I minimized one of the windows in the monitor, the graphics card gives (for the first time) to MBP panel very long flickering lines of the usual 10 pixels width.

Very very frustrating 😠 10.11

After reading so many threads and posts on this issue, it seems to be less about a particular application and more about whether that application is coded to utilize any kind of animated menu bar item, such as Little Snitch's animated menu bar icon. Other applications' menu bar icons also seem to cause issues for the Mac mini (Late 2012) and its Intel HD Graphics 4000, which then cause screen artifacts and, in many cases, kernel panics.

No Little Snitch installed here but I have another app with animated icon (Macs Fan Control)! at least I am happy that I didn't see anymore restarts since I installed El Capitan, restart for me it's not acceptable at all with Mac computers, I am sure Apple will find solution for this soon as it's totally software issue.

Yeah. I did that. It took 5 days, they ran all their fancy hardware tests and found ... nothing.

THey screwed up an already screwed driver in 10.10.3 and are not going to fix it because too few people see it. Consider this issue closed.

This will be the second time that I'll send my MBP to authorized Apple service center. Their hardware tests did't find anything in 10.10.4.

However, I'm still under extended guarantee so I'll demand a fix. Apple products are not only a hardware that should be tested. A working, updated OS is part of the deal. They are paid for both.

Agreed. But they declined any measure on my Mac because the test didn't find anything. I seriously wonder what sense the protection plan has. Mine expired some days ago. I am deeply disappointed by Apple. In OSX 10.7 I had a similar GPU issue and it took them about a year they fixed it.

I agree, there seems to be some things in common after having my own issues and reading this thread. The things I see mostly in common is the "Intel HD Graphics 4000" video and using an external monitor. I still have issues and currently at 10.11.1.

Can anyone test this:

1) Remove the external monitor, do you still have issues? (issue might be only when external monitor is plugged in)

2) Scale down the resolution of the external monitor, does that help minimize the problem? (issue is when using high resolution external monitor)

3) If you install Boot Camp and run something like Windows 7 on the same machine, do you have any issues still? (eliminate it being a hardware issue)

I know in my case removing the external monitor helped, scaling down the resolution of the external monitor seemed to help, and if I booted into Windows 7, non of the issues I have in Mac OS X exist. I have had my hardware tested and logic board replaced, and I still have issues. I tend to agree with some other posters, the issue seems to be the Intel 4000 video driver, which might have started with the 10.10.3 update, and is not even fixed in the latest 10.11.1 release. I have another Macbook Pro with the Intel Iris, and have no issues at all when running the exact same OS version and software. Everything seems to point to the Mac OS X Intel 4000 video driver when I look at everything.
