Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

After I reinstalled OS X from scratch (10.10.3) yesterday I had the flickering only after few hours of work – see post dated May 9, 2015 7:25 PM, then nothing more so far.

By reading n748comment about Flash, I'm wondering if Flash might be not fully compatible with 10.10.3?

Actually I'm avoiding to install Flash, YouTube seem to work fine with the HTML5 player so I guess I can live for a while (and maybe forever) without Flash.

Is there anyone with the flickering problem willing to uninstall the Flash Player and let us know if the flickering disappear?

To uninstall Flash:

Be sure to reboot the system after having uninstalled Flash, just to be sure nothing remains in memory.

Thanks!

Same here, Mac Mini 2012.

So Flash is not the only factor involved in the crashes. But it definitely is involved. I was able to reduce the crashes by installing ClickToFlash in Safari and I had two consecutive crashes with Chrome and activated Flash. I had to allow Flash in my main browser Safari for some handpicked web sites and just an hour ago playing music from my Amazon music library in Safari crashed the whole system once again.

And once again without OS X trying to send a crash report to Apple after rebooting. Actually only two of my numerous crashes got reported to Apple.

Some people suspected Little Snitch for being responsible for the crashes but over at the Little Snitch forums users who completely deinstalled Little Snitch ruled it out as the crashes did not stop.

But what I can add is that the flickering bar is related to Little Snitch: It flickers in the exact same frequence as LS's downstream/upstream indicator in the menu bar. Which doesn't have to mean it is the only source of the flickering bar. Maybe other programs that have active menu bar icons do cause it too.

I've been off the forum for a few days, but would like to report that I'm fairly certain the flickering and kernel panics I'm experiencing are almost certainly to do with Little Snitch.

I uninstalled LS for three days and had no problems at all. After I re-installed it I had problems again. I also noticed that the flickering bar accelerated its flickering when I opened the Little Snitch menu, and slowed when I closed it. I tried opening and closing a few times and had the same reaction from the flickering bar.

I'm wanting to confirm Safari is not to blame also (perhaps a combination of LS and Safari), so am sticking to Chrome to see if the flickering occurs again. Kernel Panics are becoming a big pain!

I'll update if I have more to share. I'm really hoping someone (Apple, LS, or someone else) has picked up on this bug and is already working on a fix.

Mid-2012 Macbook Pro.

I have Flash but neither Little Snitch nor MySQL.

I've had more Safari webcontent crashes since the 10.10.3 update as well, but I also think there might be something to it being GPU related. Shortly after the update I had problems with VLC Player crashing, I had a panic restart recently after VLC crashed, and I've also had a few restarts while watching Youtube.

In a related thread about the flickering bars on the Mac Mini board, most of the people reporting the problem also have the Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU.

I did have spontaneous system reboots since some 10.10.3-build. Every day my MBA 2012 crashed and I did not know, what actually caused it.

It seemed related to watching videos because it happened mostly while using EyeTV or watching streams online. A logic board exchange through Apple solved another problem, it did NOT stop those crashes.

I changed everything, unplugged almost everything, read the logs...now I decided to connect my external monitor via DVI instead of HDMi. I use a dual screen setup with a 24“-Samsung - no mirroring.

NO crashes for 3 days. And my MBA is running a lot cooler (warm around 70ºC but not hot anymore). Coincidence? Picture quality has always been perfect with the adapter I used for almost 3 years now...so I doubt it's broken.

I bought a new adapter and will do some testing as soon as it arrives. Am on the newest build and had crashes on the latest as well.

I'm having intermittent problems with kernel panics, reboots, and flashing bits on my monitors.

2012 Mac Mini

2.6GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB Memory

Intel HD Graphics 4000

I also have a 750GB SSD stuffed in there in addition to the 1TB hard drive. They're arranged in a DIY Fusion drive, and I'm sure the two drives in there make it run hotter than it otherwise would have.

I have dual monitors and I work the Mac Mini pretty hard. The main monitor is a 30" Dell hooked up via the Thunderbolt port and it goes through a Drobo 5D first. The 24" secondary monitor is hooked up through the HDMI port and an HDMI->DVI connector, IIRC.

Over the weekend I rearranged my office to allow my hardware better airflow. My Mac Mini is now noticeably quieter most of the time, so that seems to have helped. It's now sitting on a shelf that allows airflow underneath the computer as well. Perhaps coincidentally, I don't believe I've had the flickering graphics issue since then, and I definitely haven't had a computer crash. I was having up to 2-3 crashes per day, some days last week.

I do have MySQL installed, but if this bug is related to the Intel HD Graphics it's hard to see how MySQL could interrelate with that.

To the person asking about Chrome Remote Desktop, I just recently installed it on my Mac Mini and my computer was having these problems before I installed it. However, I installed it on my 2011 MacBook Pro last week, and immediately upon firing Chrome Remote Desktop up, my discrete graphics card packed it in. It was probably coincidence, but it was at that exact moment that my computer broke. Fortunately Apple replaced the logic board for free as this is a known issue with these computers.

Have you all tried shutting your Mac down (shutdown from the Mac menu - or press power button and hold until it really shuts down?)

Automatic restarts do not clear memory in the same manner that a shutdown(power off does). Power off will clear any stray modules that may be causing problems.

Yosemite handles memory differently than earlier versions of OS - so not a great idea start up all the apps you may use during a session as they may be killed by RAM memory handling.

Yosemite tries to keep all apps in RAM -- first by compressing some memory, then by killing inactive applications, finally by moving some active but not in use memory to VM.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.
