Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Thanks about your considerations, but we are talk here about kernel panics..

I'm sure the most of us tried shutdown our machines sometime after these panics.

To be more specific, I'm now at 10.10.2 after a week of bad things happening with 10.10.3. My macbook pro is stable now, no artifacts.

I didn't have MySQL in my Mac Book Pro, neither had using Safari (I only use Firefox and Chrome, this last one sporadically).

What I can say this is not a hardware fault, and its annoying to turn off my computer every time it do a strange artefacts on the screen or give me kernel panic, just to temporarily solve the problem.

Apple needs to fix this!

Hi, MrCamaleo.

Yes, I did install Flash in my MacBook Pro, in both OS versions: 10.10.3, and now, at 10.10.2.

Unfortunately, I can't do my work with such unstable OS.

So I will stay at 10.10.2 until the problems go away.

Flash (despite making performance worst) is working well, as all other softwares, in 10.10.2. No more kernel panics.

We are trying to input guilt to 3rd part softwares, but all problem started with this update.

If the modifications made by Apple are so significant, they should clearly advise the developers about incompatibilities, so they could "fix" their softwares.

It may be because of Safari TOP SITES refresh - and it assigning top sites on its own. I started having issues with Safari getting stuck and sometimes had a kernel panic - also slowing -- after the last snow leopard safari update -- Apparently it must have had a fix to keep refreshing them. Once I cleaned out top sites and kept an eye to keep deleting them - and history - Safari stabled up so to speak and did not have another panic etc.

On a general web search - apparently top sites can cause Yosemite to get stuck, connection problems with refresh can stop the refresh - so you may want to check on your top sites (emptying cache makes it worse because they all refresh) --

I Don't think it's safari because this morning I had a kernel attack and I was using chrome and little snitch,Apple techs keep pushing third party software but the cold restarts are so random makes me think it might be the hd 4000 video card, my flickering has not come back after doing verify disk

HI well yesterday I was using fcpx 10 .1 all day did not have any crashes when the crash happen yesterday morning safari was closed I had chrome on which I never use also little snitch,but like I said the panic attacks are so random that it could be a driver issue with the hd 4000 I sent Apple my crash logs suppose to get back to me today or tomorrow,I f you guys are having problems and it seems all the people with the Mac mini late 2012 with the 4000 video card CALL THEM

Latest report: Upgrading to the latest 10.10.4 public beta from tuesday seems to have solved the stability issues for me (Mac mini Late 2012) - no more flickering and/or panics so far - runs rock solid again. ✅ I hope the best and will report again in a few days. 🙂

Been testing the new tb → hdmi adapter and my MBA is on the newest PB as well. Haven't had any crashes for about 2 days now.

By the way: I never had Flash installed. I use Chrome for watching flash videos.

Too happy too soon... Just happened again. 😟 Saw some graphic flickering just a few minutes after posting and then again the mac jumped into a panic just 30 minutes later. But since I'm into the beta program now, I'll send apple a report and link this thread. 😐

Have you looked for any updates for the video card itself?

Another option would be to run this http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

after the crash and see if it picks up yosemite killing some running programs that are not active - only to have the software you are running require them.

Have seen in other listings of this error report that yosemite seemed to be killing apple modules.

Same here since 10.10.3. Mac Mini 2012, 16 GB Core i7 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB. The kernel panic und restarts I could soved. I'm inspecting my system to old kernel.kext and outdated system components and software, remove them and reinstall 10.10.3 from App store, make an PRAM and SMC reset and boot once in secure mode and now the mac mini runs without reboot problems fast and stable. The Logitech Driver i'm substitute with SteerMouse.

BUT: The flickering squars still happens every day. If I change the Color Sync Profile the flickering stops imediently, but happens again after some time.

last weekend, May 9~10, I did a completely fresh installation and since then I only had the flickering once for few minutes and no restarts at all.

As a weekend is approaching and it took the entire last weekend for me to complete the maintenance, I tough to share the procedure in case someone likes to do it on their systems.

This is what I did:

formatted an external disk
installed Mavericks on the external disk
set the external disk as the boot disk and rebooted
upgraded to 10.10.3 as there is no way to upgrade to 10.10.2 – initially I was thinking to switch back to Mavericks, then I realised that I need Xcode latest version for a project I'm developing, so I need Yosemite
copied all my documents and development files – using Finder
installed only the software/apps I need to work
copied all the preferences/settings of the software/apps – using Finder and the Terminal
checked that I can use all my software
duplicated my original boot disk on another external disk – using Carbon Copy Cloner, http://bombich.com/
formatted my original boot disk
duplicated the external disk to the original boot disk – using Carbon Copy Cloner
set the original boot disk as the boot disk again and rebooted
ran the Apple Diagnostics, no problems reported

Fine tuned what was still missing, like Apache configuration, installed MySQL after which I had the flickering for few minutes, then disabled MySQL.

Started to work again full time since Monday 11 – using a Raspberry Pi as MySQL sever! – and never had flickering nor restarts at all since then.

Also the system seem much faster and reactive – not sure if it became slow because of disk fragmentation even because I read SSD does not need fragmentation, anyways it looks like that after all that maintenance work I'm able to work again.

So I am not totally sure if the issue is 10.10.3 or a combination of 10.10.3 and other thinks like, for example: a fragmented disk, some other conflicting software, devices connected, etc.

Will post again if any of the issues arises again, hopefully not 😎 – or if I find out more clues, for example getting the issues back after installing some software/app.
