Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

The problem is that this issue occurs so **** erratically. I also had a week before where everything seemed fine. Then BOOM! a couple of kernel panics. Now it has been again around 10 days without any issues. However, I also tried something new and it seems to be working.

⚠ I suggest everybody try this:

Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Disable Automatic graphics switching

In the past this has been a temporary cure for similar issues with dual GPU Macbook Pros. I am not sure if this also works for the Mac mini people out there.

And yes, I have the feeling mostly tinkers are affected from this bug.

I did a full install on a external disk, like yours, but without copying any user data.. few moments later I could see the flickering and the kernel panics.

Do you still have sporadic flickering? Did you connect external monitor to it? No more kernel panics?

Do you use Little Snitch, and if yes, did you reinstalled it?

But I agree: Those sudden restarts happen without a warning. Sometimes there are logs or at least the grey screen, sometimes it is just a restart with no indication in the logs. Sometimes there are days without any (about a week in Mid April). And the problem probably is graphics related.

I use Little Snitch but not Flash. I did a clean install with 10.10.3 but I still had those crashes daily.

What some of you could try: Turn off the external monitor. Plug out the hdmi connector. Do a restart and then, plug it in. After that, turn the monitor on and wait. Does it change anything?

I usually leave it plugged in and shut my MBA down every night. When I came back from travelling I did not have a crash the entire day but my MBA was already running, when I connected the external monitor.

Since Tuesday I haven't had a single crash while using a new hdmi adapter...my MBA shows a temperature of around 50ºC, while using a browser or writing mails...it heats up to 70ºC when watching videos on the external monitor. Otherwise fans are only spinning up while watching flash with chrome.

And if you are on the beta program: You could try a safe start and see if it changes anything. I had some strange messages appearing in console. MBA seems cooler now and those messages disappeared. I'd actually be interested in your safe start experience. I get a whole lot of flickering while doing this...even when there is no external monitor connected.

Since I have disabled the network indicator of Little Snitch in the menu bar a few days ago no flickering bars have appeared whatsoever.

No crashes since then so far.

Little Snitch is still installed and it is still running. Just no progress bars for upload and download in the menu bar.

As the crashes come from out of the blue as you all know I am still suspicious of the OS stability. At least now I can hope this helped. Re-Installing 10.3.3 did not. My monitor is connected via DVI so all of this is not a HDMI (only) issue.

After having read a lot about Mac users reporting the crashes the suspicion seems to harden that they are video related:

The majority of crashes reported happen to machines with Intel HD 4000
The software involved is either video editing software and suchlike, or browsers displaying videos (both Safari and Chrome) in Flash or HTML5 format
Other software maybe involved in the crashes but definitely involved in the flickering bars is software with active/colour menu bar icons (there are crash reports from users not running Little Snitch at all, so it can not be the only factor involved)

Beside from turning off the network indicator of Little Snitch I have disabled Flash in Safari. If no crashes happen I will switch it on again to rule it out. But not just yet—this is my working machine, mind you. (Hello Apple!)

one single time flickering that never reappeared, no panics at all.

I use the Mini with TWO Apple Thunderbird Displays.

I do not use Little Snitch.

After removing it things seems to be back to normal here, no flickering, crashes or jerky trackpad for week. I believe Little Snitch also has such an icon?

I've always got LS running invisible - never helped against the flickering / crashes - also uninstalling LS had no effect.

For me the flickering mostly occurs after waking from sleep and disappears after a screen refresh event (like activating Mission Control).

It's nasty that those crashes sometimes take days to repeat - makes it really tough to check, if it's 3rd party or Apple's fault.

Now would be the question: What animated Menu Bar plugins do all the guys have (OneDrive, iStat Menus here)? 🙂

Same here. LS running with icon in menu bar, so is iStat menus.

But I haven't seen any flickering on my machine. It simply crashed - mostly while watching videos of any kind. HD 4000 as well. And since my logic board got replaced twice and the crashes happened with all three of them...it is probably drivers related.

Finder crashed on me big time when I deactivated finder integration with dropbox. Had to restart my MBA, was unusable.

I'm using MenuMeters 1.8.1 and since the reinstallation no flickering.

I also use other apps that can add their icon, like Evernote and Skitch, but the icon is there only when the app is open.

Well, I believe it's not only a case of icons. I suspect it relates to anything that interacts with SystemUIServer: http://guides.macrumors.com/SystemUIServer. It's just my theory though, I may be wrong.
