Anyone know how to destroy this annoying popup in Safari? It occurs often and randomly--not specifically to any action on my part.
Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

You don't have to close the account. I'm not sure if Google will even permit you to do so. You simply have to remove it from your Mac.
System Preferences > Internet Accounts > select the problematic Google account. If you are harassed for a password, click Cancel. De-select Mail. Remove the account using the [—] (minus) button. Confirm the dialog and the Mail account will be gone. If you are using iCloud it will be gone from all the devices using that iCloud account.
The email account will still exist on Google's servers though. For all I know it will remain there through the next ice age and beyond, dormant though it may be.
Thank you. I'd prefer not to remove google form my mac, though. Otherwise, I have to keep going to the web to get my email, correct? Not sure if deleting the account would have any other impacts either.
It just started happening to me tonight. It's popping up on Firefox now. Nothing I can do gets rd of it. I've got my gmail address spread all over the universe - banks, Amazon, you name it. Would someone please tell me how to get rid of this monster popup, and would someone suggest some dependable non-intrusive, free email program to use in gmail's place?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I do want to bring to everyone's attention that there is another annoying issue involving a Google service. For the longest time my active window would suddenly lose it's focus at seemingly random times throughout the day. It was most annoying when I was typing, and I didn't know the focus had shifted it until I looked up at the screen. I finally filed a bug report with Apple, but was told they "would not fix". Eventually, I was able to trace the problem to Google Drive. I unchecked the preference setting (in Google Drive's preferences, not Apple's) which allowed Google Drive to launch whenever the computer was restarted and I haven't seen the problem since. Hope this helps someone else with this problem!
Google has definitely dropped the ball in the QA dept.
Thanks, John Galt. I never thought much about iCloud mail before. Do you have any info on how secure and private it is?

Secure and private? Seriously?
You can't possibly compare Google Mail – which is specifically designed to harvest personal information from your emails and sell it to others – and iCloud Mail, which is specifically designed to keep your personal information secure. There are no options more fundamentally opposed than those two.
I suspect that I can now confidently conclude that Mr. Galt's remedy posted on May 18th has solved this issue, for I have not experienced those cursed popups for several days after implementing it. Thank you, John Galt!
I just tried this and it worked! I'm free! Thank you, John Galt.
You're welcome.
If there is any doubt in your mind regarding Apple's commitment to security and privacy, you might be interested in the following timely story:
Tim Cook Gives Blistering Privacy Speech
"I’m speaking to you from Silicon Valley, where some of the most prominent and successful companies have built their businesses by lulling their customers into complacency about their personal information," said Cook. "They’re gobbling up everything they can learn about you and trying to monetize it. We think that’s wrong. And it's not the kind of company that Apple wants to be."
Any uncertainty regarding iCloud Mail's security and privacy — and how those criteria compare to Google's — should now be abundantly clear.
I'm considering setting up forwarding from my Gmail accounts to go to my iCould .mac email account - and only having that on my Mac.
Seems like a good workaround to me.
Any comments about whether this would/wouldn't work?
Thanks
Tim
Tim Cook's privacy speech is commendable. I wish Apple was as committed to lowering its prices.
I do not know how to configure Google mail's servers to automatically forward email or if it's even possible to do so, but assuming you can that should work.
As long as you are not using any Google products on your Mac you will not be harassed for a Google password.
Hi. I was having the same issue. I opened up apple mail, then went into preferences. Once I clicked on my account info, it synced and the issue just stopped. Hope this helps.
I've tried it - seems to be working so far.
Thank you
Tim
