Opening Plan app on my apple watch, show me only a grid and no map !
Watch Sport 42mm, iOS 8.3
Unbelievable that this problem still occurs almost 2 years after this thread started. What worked for me was unpairing (including backup and resetting the watch) and repairing the watch.
For those who did not do that before (like me): No worries, your watch (esp. settings, apps, watchfaces) will be like before. Steps are described on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204568.
The other solutions above like doing a simple or nearby search did not work for me.
I have exactly the same problem. On my Apple Watch, maps shows only a grid with no street marking or other information. Rebooted both the iPhone 6 Plus and the Apple Watch. Problem still exists. Also tried to get a contact to show up on the map, by pressing hard on the map, selecting the contact, but the Apple Watch simply remains at contacts and never shows a location on the Apple Watch map. Any ideas on how to solve this that I have not tried?
Tom
Solved the problem with a hard reset of the iPhone 6 Plus, i.e. pressing and holding simultaneously the home button an power button on the side. Maps now works perfectly.

Hard reset of iPhone 6 didn't help. Still no maps.
Reset and re-setup of my Apple Watch this morning has fixed this. Hard reboots and reboots of both iPhone and Apple watch didn't fix it for me either.
I Had the same problem.
I Had to turn off the watch, then hard reset the phone and finally turn the watch back on and it started working!
For those who are having this issue, I am curious if the Astronomy watch face knows where you are. I am having this issue with Maps (restarting phone and watch didn't resolve) and the Astronomy watch face doesn't know where I am. Oddly some apps, like Uber and Starbucks, do know where I am.
Everyone keep in mind what I said to stuart earlier here...
...the Watch is an accessory to the iPhone and gets it info from it...
Although it has many unique gizmos inside, it is still dependent on the iPhone being in very close proximity.
I am not saying there is not a Maps glitch (or 2 or 3 or...) - just that the Watch is not a Dick Tracy Wrist Radio, standing alone.
As a troubleshooter/debugger, any and all anecdotal data - detailed in nature - is mission critical to solving stuff -- even if it ends being done quietly by the Wizard behind the Big Green Curtain

I Too had this issue and rebooting both my phone and watch didnt resolve the issue. I contacted Apple support about it and they had me unpair my watch and recover it from a back up. It is now working.
Un-pairing and re-pairing solved it for me. Also fixed the Bible Reader app from Olive Tree that wasn't working properly on the watch. Thanks Unique Rose for the help.
yes I also had same issue and it worked after I rebooted the watch and the phone at the same time.
I have this problem since I had to reset my watch today. When I start maps only the grid is displayed and an endlessly spinning progress indicator. And, alas, none of the fixes mentioned here work. Restarts, hards resets of iPhone and watch, re-pairing: no change. Well, admitted, this is version 1(.0.1) of Watch OS, but it is somewhat annoying.
I am also having this experience. I have restarted both my watch and phone. Performed a hard reset of the phone, unpaired and repaired the watch, chose not to use the backup and still the issue persists.
None of the fixes in this thread helped me either. If Apple Support manage to fix it, I'll post back here with anything relevant.
i have the same problem. re-pairing as well as hard rebooting the phone and the watch didnt solve the problem. at first, the maps app on the watch couldn't locate me as well, but this was indeed resolved by hard resetting both devices though...
I'm getting the same issue... I've tried un-pairing and restoring from back up. I tried hard reset of iPhone... Haven't tried setting up as a new again watch yet. My wife's watch works. Only difference is she has an iPhone 5s and I have an iPhone 6.
