Unbelievable that this problem still occurs almost 2 years after this thread started. What worked for me was unpairing (including backup and resetting the watch) and repairing the watch.

For those who did not do that before (like me): No worries, your watch (esp. settings, apps, watchfaces) will be like before. Steps are described on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204568.

The other solutions above like doing a simple or nearby search did not work for me.

None of the fixes in this thread helped me either. If Apple Support manage to fix it, I'll post back here with anything relevant.

Like many here, I called Apple Support, and after spending over an hour on the phone resetting the watch and iPhone, we had no success.

I was told that Apple Support are prioritising problems with Apple Watch right now, and the more calls to support, the more attention this issue will be given and the sooner a fix (which I'm sure will be software) will be released.

I would therefore urge all of you to contact Apple Support by phone if you haven't done so already. Online chat is a waste of time, as you will eventually have to speak to a senior engineer on the phone anyway. When calling, be sure to mention this forum post - the engineer I spoke to asked for the URL and included it in his notes. This way, Apple can also track how widespread the issue is.

My case is an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.3 and an Apple Watch that was on 1.0.0, and then 1.0.1. My mobile provider is EE, but in fact most of my testing of the Maps app has been done over WiFi. Everything else on the Apple Watch is working fine for me (minor idiosyncrasies aside, of course ;-) ).

Encountered the issue whilst learning how to use the watch. Here are the steps that I went through, so you guys know what to try or not:

1. Turned watch off and back on, no joy

2. Turned phone off, then back on, no joy

3. Tried a reset on phone (Holding Power and Home for a few seconds), no joy

4. Unpaired using app on phone, re-paired, using the new watch option, not restore from backup..... No Joy

5. Left everything alone and went to sleep, hoping it would fix itself, overnight..... no joy, but I did wake up with renewed enthusiasm

6. Turned off phone....reset using function on watch. Turned on phone, re-paired using latest back up option..... no joy

7. Plugged phone into iTunes, performed a complete backup, then restored phone in iTunes using the latest backup option. You are forced to re-pair the watch upon completion, so this time I chose the set up as a new watch function and install all available apps. I am still waiting for all apps to install, however with the core apps installed, it would appear that the issue still persists. Using the watch Siri function I asked "Where Am I", my location is reported correctly but a map will not load, just a spinning circle of spheres

I will now wait to see if this changes once all apps are installed as there could be a heavy load on BT connection whilst apps are still installing, however my enthusiasm has now lowered again.....maybe a short nap? :-)

Looks like this could be software / hardware bug...... Now picking up courage to call Apple :-(

Same issue here

juat got back from the Genius Bar and about 4 people were trying to help.

Outcome... there were two options. 1 : send the watch for diagnostic and not have my watch for a good 2 or 3 weeks and they probably won't be able to fix it. Or 2: wait for the software patch. We did try everything including trying it with another iphone. Nothing works.

SO, I think the people who who have tried everything, we just need to wait for the software patch.

I just got my 42mm Sport and am having the same issue as all of you....tried EVERYTHING on my own first, then spent 1 1/2 hours with apple support walking me through everything I had just tried only to find out that I knew more about the apple watch than the tech....he was a very nice guy, but had no clue how to help me....he sent over my diagnostics to the engineers to look at and try to fix. They collected the data from my watch and from my iPhone to try and resolve the issue but I have a strong feeling it is a software issue on the phone itself. Save yourself 2 hours and just wait for my post when they resolve my issue...I spent way too much time trying to reset things and resync to no avail....will update everyone when I hear anything!
