Unbelievable that this problem still occurs almost 2 years after this thread started. What worked for me was unpairing (including backup and resetting the watch) and repairing the watch.

For those who did not do that before (like me): No worries, your watch (esp. settings, apps, watchfaces) will be like before. Steps are described on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204568.

The other solutions above like doing a simple or nearby search did not work for me.

Hey everyone, was reading all of these, I had the same problem but figured out a fix.

Just open Maps on your phone, tap the "i" in the bottom right hand corner, switch it from Standard to Hybrid and then open maps on your watch. It will take a minute to load but will start working!

Hope this helps everyone.
I also reset my iPhone, Watch, and hard rebooted both before with no results.

Unfortunately, we all bought first generation apple watches...I was one of the first to buy the original iPhone when it first came out and this is a tiny tiny problem compared to the issues they had when those first came out...if it weren't a holiday weekend I would say they would have it fixed and put out an update in a few days but give it a week and I am sure our problem will be resolved! Just try not to drive using your iPhone watch maps, you might end up off the grid somewhere 🙂

The "Switch from Standard to Hybrid" didn't work for me, either.

In addition to phone company - mine's AT&T - the other thing we might all have in common could be our Apple IDs. I actually have TWO: an ancient, iTunes Store account to which all my music and my apps are locked, ********** (which now as an @outlook.com email address associated with it, since .mac is long gone and Apple won't let me use my REAL address!), and a second account for my iCloud content, *******. It's the only other condition I can think of that's sort of "out of the norm". Can future posters maybe comment on their Apple ID setup so Apple knows if this is a potential avenue for a fix?

Add me to the list of people without maps working. As with most posts, latest OS for both phone (iphone6) and watch (stainless). I have tried all of the resets and repairing suggestions here without success. Same symptoms, can't see the maps only the grid, but the phone seems to know about where I am and all apps that need that information have it.

I will call Apple support to add to the collective voice...

Same problem, no map, with the following wrinkle. When the watch arrived about 10 days ago and I paired with Iphone6 plus the map worked fine. Yesterday I had to replace Iphone with a new one so unpaired and then re-paired and the map has not worked since. Called Apple today and the technician was stumped, gave me his email and said he needs to elevate the issue.
