No sound or haptic for notifications or alarms

This was working fine yesterday, but today I realized I no longer was receiving sound/haptic alerts. It became more obvious when I set an alarm and nothing happened except for the message on the screen. I checked to see if the volume/vibration level was turned down, if it was in silent mode, or in “do not disturb” mode. The iPhone was locked, so notifications were not being directed there.

I called Apple Support and they verified I checked everything. They suggested turning the watch off and on and it then worked (doh… that is the first thing I would do on another device! I guess I still don’t think about turning off a watch!). It seems there may be a bug in this 1.0 software/hardware (what a shock!).

I write this here to see if this is a common issue, or if I was just lucky. Please respond if you experienced this and if turning off the watch cured the problem.

Oh my god. Thank you.

I’m deaf and this watch has been infuriating to say the least and making me angry for the past two weeks. Like, I would love to be able to wake up and go to work on time, Apple.

This has solved it for the time being, but you’re correct that this shouldn’t be happening. I’m still reporting as feedback that clearly something between iOS 11 and wiOs 4 isn’t jiving.

You, however, are a god. Thank you, Jason!

Also - so I’m not double posting - I just found something out: if you don’t enable Watch App > clock > “push alerts from iPhone” option, the haptic feedback in the alarms app starts to work again.

So much time wasted on unpairing and re-pairing and it was such a simple fix...

I've been having the same problem since iOS 11 and WatchOS 4, and reading through a couple threads, I checked the alarms I had already set before the update. They were set to Vibration>None. I made a new test alarm, made sure to enable vibration, and sure enough, my watch vibrated at the same time as my iPhone. I guess I'll know tomorrow morning.

(Also, if you use the Bedtime feature, you need to enable it there, too, under Bedtime>Options. I rely on Bedtime to wake me at 5AM, and a loud alarm at 5:01 in case I miss it.)

I had the same problem when I bought a new series 3 (really a 2 since no cellular) watch. I called apple support and he tried different things and eventually told me I should exchange it for a new one (Apple Watch). Took my < 14 day old watch in and got a new one. New one didn't work either so as a last ditch, I did what others are saying and went into the alarm on my iPhone, chose edit, then sound, and saw the vibrate was set at "none." I wouldn't think this has anything to do with the watch as the alarm is a separate function on the watch, but I changed the alarm to a vibration setting (default) and saved it. Then, I tested watch one more time (different time than the iPhone) and it worked! Not sure why, but it does. Apple help people should have known this.

I know it seems weird but you have to go deep into your phone alarm settings.

On your phone, pick any alarm -touch edit -select alarm-select sound—scroll all the way to the top and change vibration from none to something and save it.

This is what fixed it. After months on the test version and being so frustrated. It’s not an update issue.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

Wow that is crazy! What a headache. I think iOS 11 “reset” the alarm settings because this happened to me way back when I starte the trial version. Of course I thought that was why and I couldn’t to anything until the official was complete. Then they still didn’t know. I thought it was my watch and was going to upgrade to a new one. Glad I didn’t. I can’t believe customer service and apple store staff don’t know this issue.

I’m having the same problem, woke up late this morning because I use the vibration from the alarm on my Apple to wake me up. Instead it just did that little soft sound which won’t wake me up at all. The haptic feedback works with everything else except my alarms. Anyone else having this problem? Today was the first time it happened and of course it’s after doing the update. Help!

(I have a series 2 Apple Watch)

I thought I would add to this, having narrowly missed my Eurostar (international train) this morning after my 5am Apple Watch alarm did not produce the haptic alert which it should have. Again.

For one reason or another I

have had four Apple Watch series 0 watches which exhibited this behaviour. After much complaining I got lucky with a manager at an Apple retail store who agreed to swap my series 0 for a series 1 to see if this solved the problem. It hasn't.

The story is the same with every new Apple Watch I get. Works fine for a few months. Then one morning i wake up (late) to find the alarm screen showing, but no haptic vibrations. Useless.

I can set another alarm as soon as I wake up and it will go off with haptics just as it should do. Little use when you're already late.

As you may have gathered from the above, I wear my watch to bed. For sleep tracking and (when it works!) for an alarm which doesn't wake my partner. Interestingly, my sleep app today showed that "I was moving" at 5am (the time when my alarm was supposed to be going off). I was certainly asleep User uploaded fileand the developer of the app has mentioned that this sort of misreporting sometimes results from a software bug. Perhaps the bug is related.

What's the most frustrating part of this process? The face that Apple has been aware of this issue for years. The silent vibrating alarm was a key feature for me. And like any alarm it's useless if it's unreliable. It is not good enough to suggest restarting your watch if the failing alarm has already cost you a flight, an important business meeting, a job.

To an extent, I hoped it was a hardware issue with the series 0 which had been eradicated by the internal changes to series 1. Sadly not.

I'm having a similar frustrating issue. No sound from notifications and I can't hear the caller when I answer a phone call from the watch. I've already contacted Apple support twice AND went to the Genius Bar. They verified my issue and couldn't figure it out there, so sent it away for repair. I was then informed no issue was found and the watch was being returned to me. It worked for a few days and then back to the previous issue. I turn my phone and watch off, but nothing. And it appears 147 others are having similar problems based on this post. Either way, when you spend $$ on a device like this it should be in working order. I hope a solution is found soon!
