No sound or haptic for notifications or alarms

This was working fine yesterday, but today I realized I no longer was receiving sound/haptic alerts. It became more obvious when I set an alarm and nothing happened except for the message on the screen. I checked to see if the volume/vibration level was turned down, if it was in silent mode, or in “do not disturb” mode. The iPhone was locked, so notifications were not being directed there.

I called Apple Support and they verified I checked everything. They suggested turning the watch off and on and it then worked (doh… that is the first thing I would do on another device! I guess I still don’t think about turning off a watch!). It seems there may be a bug in this 1.0 software/hardware (what a shock!).

I write this here to see if this is a common issue, or if I was just lucky. Please respond if you experienced this and if turning off the watch cured the problem.

Oh my god. Thank you.

I’m deaf and this watch has been infuriating to say the least and making me angry for the past two weeks. Like, I would love to be able to wake up and go to work on time, Apple.

This has solved it for the time being, but you’re correct that this shouldn’t be happening. I’m still reporting as feedback that clearly something between iOS 11 and wiOs 4 isn’t jiving.

You, however, are a god. Thank you, Jason!

Also - so I’m not double posting - I just found something out: if you don’t enable Watch App > clock > “push alerts from iPhone” option, the haptic feedback in the alarms app starts to work again.

So much time wasted on unpairing and re-pairing and it was such a simple fix...

Same issue here. Sound and haptic on, on for the application as well, but no sound, sometimes haptic, but no sound and notifications are very inconsistent. Yesterday when it stopped, I turned iPhone off and back on and watch and it began to get notifications and make the sound. Kind of surprised since alarms are a basic watch feature. Today I am having the same issue but rebooting the phone and watch did not work.

Hi David,

This is what I found works for me, now I get me email and message notifications.

I think I figured it out....

1. First, Go into your Apple Watch App on your iphone.

2. Next, go into Notifications and make sure both the Indicator and Privacy are turned off.

3. I also went into the message and email tabs and made sure the Custom tab was checked and turned on Show Alerts, Sound, and Haptic.

I hope it works for you too!

Unfortunately I have this too.

Maybe it's related to the fact that some apps have watch apps and others don't and that haptic may be related to that. That would explain a lot.

I only get haptic with preinstalled apps, so I know it's not a matter of a faulty haptic piece.

However, if this is the way Apple will keep managing notifications I think it's a bit bad since this just got me checking my watch to see if there's a red dot there, draining my battery unnecessarily.

I hope 1.0.2 makes all notification haptic-able

Hi Deggie.

Yes, I have. All the settings are what they should be. I tried with different level settings for sound and haptics, proeminent haptic, everything.

Initially I thought that only the apps that have a watch app, like instagram, would use the haptic engine to notify me. However that's not the case. They don't.

So, right now, I'm trully disappointed and the notifications seem more and more random. I bought the watch 80% because of the ease on receiving notifications without the need to pull my phone, but all I get is a need to constantly check the red dot on the watch. On top of that, Some notifications go straight to the phone, despite they're both locked.

I understand that when I'm working with the iPhone, the notifications go there, that's great. But unless I'm actively working with the Watch, the same doesn't happen. And worst of all, the watch simply doesn't warn me when something happens.

It's not a matter of sensibility in the haptic engine. The settings are for the highest possible and I do feel very well the haptic touch when I need to stand. So it's definitely not that...

I really hope a future software update solves this question. Otherwise, I don't know if I'm not better off selling it... Yes it's a great piece of design and yes, it tells time. But that doens't make it the smartwatch I was hoping for.

Cheers,

All of my notifications, with the not unexpected exception of one, work and use touch and sound. The sole exception is Facebook which does come in but doesn't trigger touch or sound. But before the watch it didn't vibrate or issue a sound on my phone either for most versions so that doesn't surprise me. I don't use notifications for Twitter and Instagram.

If none of your 3rd party notifications are working it could be a problem with your setup and you need to restore or get the watch serviced.

Jun 3, 2015 8:30 AM in response to deggie

Oh that's just bad... What possibly can I be doing wrong. I just can't understand since there's not a simple setting for it. All you can do is "mirror iPhone". My concern are the 3rd party apps, not the native ones, of course. Those work superbly.

Can you name a few apps you have installed that buzz you in the wrist when a notification arrives? Because it's not only the lack of haptic, is also the lack of warning. the screen doesn't turn on.. nothing. I just see the red dot and that's it. Sometimes I twist my wrist just to look at the red dot and not to the actual time (how silly, but yes...)

I have only a few apps installed in the watch, Instagram, Swarm, and I thought that maybe you would get haptic alerts only for those apps + native, but no.. Instagram alerts don't activate haptic alert too.

So, I don't see what can be done... I bought the watch in USA but I'm Portuguese, and there's no Apple Stores here, no Genius, and no support for it here yet...

deggie, what apps do you usually get notifications with haptic? Can you please share?

Thanks!

Well some good news.

It turns out that it was a matter of settings after all.

Now, they don't work 100% of the time, but now they work at least, in some way. Maybe 75% of the time.

So, almost all of my phone notifications were muted - no sound, only banners and notification cnter alerts. When I set the sound "on", they started hapting my wrist. So that was it.

Now the worst thing is, I hate notification sounds on my phone. I probably get 20 notifications per hour, but I'll try and use it like this: sound only on the notifications I want to receive at Watch.

However I still hope that Apple clarifies this in the near future and that I can still have muted notificatons with haptic. Nevertheless, I'm starting to appreciate my watch much more now! 🙂

Thanks once again for all your efforts.
