AMD Radeon R9 M370X Struggling to play games (i.e. GTA V) - bootcamp

Hello I am running bootcamp with windows 8.1 pro.

I have the latest retina Macbook pro (mid-2015) with AMD Radeon R9 M370X graphics, with 2.8 ghz processor and 16 gb of ram.

it's completely maxed out spec-wise, yet it struggles in bootcamp, for games.

I haven't been able to try it with other games, but with GTA V it is really struggling, it lags, even when the lowest resolution settings are on, and is next to unplayable.

Is this what I should expect with my maxed out macbook? Or is there another issue that maybe causing this.

Thanks in advance!

Things I have tried:

- Update graphics drivers, (which windows says its up to date) but I'm unsure if it is or not.

I would say so. I got the new model with the m370x GPU and benchmarks have shown there isn't much of a change between them. The big difference is that the 750M is up to date with the latest drivers like every other NVidia GPU, as this graphics card can be found on other types of Windows laptops. Thus games like GTA V etc. are supported by drivers. This AMD M370X on the other hand is not supported with all the latest driver updates, so is not supported by AMD to run games like GTA V. This is because the M370X is an Apple exclusive graphics card so AMD can't be bothered to support it as the only people asking for drivers would be Bootcamp users and there aren't enough of us for them to care.

I got an update notification today telling me there was an update to my drivers. You can imagine my joy as I believed AMD had finally pulled its finger out and had included this video card in the latest update of AMD Cataylst Control Centre. Unfortunately after downloading the update it then told me that no AMD supported graphics card to be found. 😟 I've submitted a ticket but I don't have high hopes of of them actually doing anything.

The feeling of excitement when it was downloading and then the despair when "no AMD hardware was detected" was awful. If AMD wants to cast us aside, I'm not happy about that, but fine at least I know. But to taunt us with this update, make us watch the dwonlaod bar fill up and then give us that pop up because **** you. Goddamit.😢

I included my version of those screenshots when I sent my ticket to AMD but I get the feeling they'll be like "That's apples problem go moan to them" and then apple will be like "whatchu want windows for?". 😠

The reason you are all having problems is because the R9 M370X is actually a fairly low-end video card.

Take a look at the benchmarks yourself - http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R9-M370X.142763.0.html

I run a 2013 rMBP with GT750m. It is 10x better than the AMD cards, including some on the cMP. The 2011 Video recall issues with Apple/AMD have made me ambivalent about AMD.

Based on all this discussion, if I want to get a MacBook Pro that is also good at playing games in Windows, should I just get a refurbished 2014 model with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M?

Yes. I would even consider a Late 2013 rMBP. Much cheaper than a 2014 and with the slightly lower CPUs, but this is not CPU-related anyway.

I think the original guy and I may have differing definitions on "lag free". I just don't think even with the right drivers that this video card (which is let's be honest medium spec at best) can run GTA V at 2880*1800 " lag free". That is quite a demanding task and drivers can only do so much. I'm sure there will be a small to medium increase in performance but I would be very surprised if these drivers or any driver could make these Macbook Pros play a demanding game like GTA at native 2880*1800 resolution.
