cannot connect to gmail after 10.10.4 update
After updating to 10.10.4 I can no longer connect to gmail. It worked right before the update, so it's clearly the update that broke it. What can I do?

I can't send out emails via my gmail account, and also I have tried the Automatically detect and maintain accounts settings and it does not work.
The STMP configuration for the gmail account is always losing the password, despite entering it various times. Also the accountsd deamon is always running using 50% of the CPU.
I wish Apple would one day release a reliable mail program. Under 10.10 it has been horrendous.

Thanks. Worked for me. Had to quit and re-open mail. My University account also depends on gmail.
If the trick with checking "Automatically detect and maintain accounts settings" does not work, the only solution seems to be delete the google account and then add it again. That finally made my mail work again, see this thread: after 10.10.4 update, can't take Google mail online. It's a bit of a hassle. Mail has to re-sync all messages again. And it also seems it erroneously starts a second copy of mail. But eventually, for me everything is back to normal.
Had the same problem and was able to fix this in two different steps:
1) Receiving Email -- Go to the Mail Preferences -> Accounts - Click on the amount in question and then Go to the Advanced Tab ... Check the Automatically Detect And Maintain Account Settings. After completing this step I was able to connect to my Gmail IMAP server and all the mail came in.
2) Sending Email -- Now that I could get my email, I still couldn't send email. A post in a different thread said to go to KeyChain and deleted all references to Gmail Passwords - both IMAp and SMTP Passwords. After doing this, go to Mail Accounts and deleted all Gmail accounts. Close Mail. Reopen Mail and then add the accounts back. Once this was completed, I was able to receive/send from all Gmail accounts.
My GUESS is that there is a bug that didn't take into consideration or know how to determine which SMTP password to use in Keychain. This likely of particular issue for those people who have done migrations from earlier OS X's or people who have added/deleted Gmail accounts multiple accounts.
Don't know is this will work for non-Gmail accounts.
YMMV, which means this will likely not work for everyone, but it did for me.
Great thanks. I had the sending issue with gmail. All I had to do was delete all non-working "smtp.gmail.com" entries from keychain, then recreate those smtp server entries from within mail. I might have opened and closed mail a few times in the process to refresh everything. Seems to be OK now.
In the process I found a lot of old redundant entries in keychain from previous mail accounts, passwords that had been changed etc so took the opportunity to have a good clean out.
Simply checking "Automatically detect and maintain accounts settings" solved my problem
(introduced in Mail 8.2 (2102) (OS X 10.10.4)) ...
which is ironic, because when I "downgraded" from Snow Leopard to Yosemite
I had to *uncheck* it to get Mac Mail to work properly, as did many other users.
(I.e., no delete/add was needed)
So, now my office manager knows...the next time I complain about Mac Mail not
getting gmail, she'll say: toggle that setting! 🙂
