iPhoto 11 - Problems With Photo Locations

Now that I can finally get back into my iPhoto library, I'm trying to update the locations on some recent photos. With no luck!

1) On the photos that have embedded location information, I can see the location name BUT the map is blank. It makes me worry that the location data is defective. Any ideas on how I can get the map to display. (I actually DO see the correct map for a brief instant before it switches to the blank white box you can see in this screen capture)

2) On the photos with no embedded location data, I usually use my web browser to search for my location using maps.google.com, then I copy and paste the place name (and address) exactly as maps.google.com shows it. Always worked in the past, will not work now! I just tried it with the location name "Parco Acquedotti Appia Antica, Via Lemonia, Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy". For kicks, I tried "Detroit, Michigan" instead - also no luck!

Anyone know what causes this in iPhoto 11, and what I could do to correct it? Thanks!

Same problem running iPhoto 11 (v9.4.3) on a 2011 Macbook Pro, 8Gb RAM w/10.8.5. This is the first real stumper that I've come across.

However, I've updated Google Earth a couple of times in the last 2 weeks via the Google Update Manager. I thought it would be safe to upgrade as I do not like upgrading -- unless absolutely necessary. I remember someone mentioning in the iPhoto 9 thread that the Map feature of iPhoto was a mini web app so to speak, so I cleared all the caches that I could find in Google Earth but still no go. Repaired my boot volume from the Recover Partition and repaired the permissions but still no map. I even waved a rubber chicken at the computer -- one of my Mac techs carried one in his repair kit for field work. However, this issue is impervious to plastic fowl.

So, I won't look at the problem for 2 weeks and see if it goes away. Plus I'll keep an eye on this thread. Silly computers! Have a great day ladies and gents!

After experiencing the same Google Maps issue with iPhoto '11, and, knowing that Apple has been moving everything away from Google Maps to Apple Maps, in some cases to avoid having to pay Google for the use of Google Maps in Apple applications (like iPhoto '11), I did the following experiment. My iMac has both a Mountain Lion (10.8.5) partition and a Yosemite (10.10.4) partition. I copied one of my iPhoto '11 libraries from the Mountain Lion partition to the Yosemite partition, and rebooted in Yosemite. When I open iPhoto 9.6.1, the iPhoto library is "upgraded" to work with iPhoto 9.6.1, and all of the map and geotag data are visible, unlike when the library was opened in iPhoto'11.

Since this first appeared on 1 July 2015, the most logical explanation is that, with 10.10.5 now in beta with the next version of Photos, Google Maps support for iPhoto '11 has ended effective the end of the day, 30 June 2015. So, I guess, it's time to embrace upgrading your operating system if you ever want to see your Places information again.

It will be interesting to see if Apple makes any official statement about the loss of Places information in iPhoto '11.

After finding this discussion, I am glad that at least, I am not the only one who is having the same issue on iPhoto 9.4.3. I hope that it can be easily solved because I would not like to update my OS (I have mountain lion) neither my iPhoto. I am/was pretty happy with the combination iPhoto/Aperture and Google Maps. If they do not solve it I will consider to move my photos to Lightroom instead of upgrading to Yosemite.

Anyway I do not see Apple motivated about solving any issue on iPhoto furthermore when it is an old version. I bet for an answer like "update...."

Let's see!

Exactly. So am I. Just do not understand: Apple doesn't support iPhoto/Aperture (any version, let alone iPhoto'11 [in fact iPhoto'09]) anymore, so for Apple these two is kind of extinct software, why not keep things as they had been doing by the moment it abandoned them? Why not let old iPhoto and Aperture use Google Maps

data, while keeping existing course of development up?

I'm afraid my intuition tells me that any wait is hopeless.

I've about had it with Apple unilaterally pulling the plug on software features we've paid for! They've done it to me with their Airport utility losing support for early models of the Airport. Then they moved from mobile me to iCloud, killing my ability to easily sync contacts and calendars across the MANY Apple devices I purchased. Now it seems they're happily leaving those of us who purchased & use iPhoto in the dirt re: geo-tagging photos and who knows what other features.

You know what - i BOUGHT iLife, many many times, and for more than one computer. And I bought it with the expectation that I would be able to use it for as long as I cared to, and maybe have the OPTION of upgrading at a later date IF I CHOSE TO ! But Apple's policies don't align with that expectation. It is a HUGE disappointment, and I feel like I'm being forced to buy new hardware software in order to regain features I've already paid for.

I feel exactely like you. I am a big apple fan but i really do not like their policy and how their are releasing one OS per year leaving many old software without support. My opinion is that they should solve this issue because 3-4 years-old software is not old enough... but it is just my opinion.

If I have to move my photos to any other app i will choose lightroom. For sure I will not use an apple app anymore for this task.
