It seems that the contract with google to use the API on iphoto ended this month.

As an example I rescued an article from gizmodo about maps on ios.

As I wrote before, somewhere, I will not upgrade for the moment. I will see after they release El Capitan. Anyway, the old locations will always be there if i move my data to photos. Does any of you have experience?

Upgrading to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1 could be a solution if Mavericks could still be downloaded from the Mac appStore.... but you can't find it anymore!

It might be possible to set up a proxy locally to fix the requests for Google maps, but based on a quick look with wireshark it's not 100% obvious which of the requests to Google is failing. In the short term, I am using Lightroom to show the mapping information for my pictures. Exporting from older iPhoto to versions to Lightroom works well, but new versions of iPhoto preclude that.

There has never been a way to export from iPhoto to Lightroom. On the other hand, there is the possibility of exporting to the Finder and that's the same as it ever was, so I'm not clear on what you mean.

Older versions of iPhoto (up to 8.1.2 ('09)) stored most of the data, including tags or comments, in Finder-accessible formats that can be processed with 3rd party apps to achieve a compete export. I use Phoshare 1.5.1 myself which allows me to use iPhoto and Adobe Lightroom back-and-forth, by regularly organizing and exporting material from iPhoto and still retain the ability to modify the files later on with Lightroom (see http://code.google.com/p/phoshare/ ).

iPhoto 9 (that's v8.1.2) and iPhoto 11 store the files in precisely the same way. The developer of Phoshare - which is simply a way to export your photos to the Finder and nothing to do with Lightroom at all, ceased development of it as the feature it offered is included in the export panel of iPhoto11.

Don't forget this is about photo mapping. By the tool I mentioned, I found a way to move my iPhoto library to another tool that lets me do the geomapping and, better yet, I have a way to go back and forth. If this is helpful to somebody else, great. Why quibble about pedantic issues? Use my tip of discard it. That said, here are some further comments in response to your statements.

I have not attempted to compare how recent versions of iPhoto store image files: note that the issue is metadata, not (just) the photos themselves, so I am not sure you have made the comparison correctly. The Phoshare developer (Tilman) has explicitly stated that more "recent" iPhoto versions made it infeasible for his tool to extract metatdata and that's why he stopped development. A short quote is "With iPhoto 9.4, the amount of data shared with other applications has been greatly reduced, and some features have already been lost." Your comment about Phoshare being "nothing to do with Lightroom at all" is wrong. The topic I was addressing is the ability to export data (including full metadata, keywords, faces, etc) from iPhoto for use with other applications, and in my case Lightroom. Phoshare provides specific hooks that make sharing with Lightroom possible in a manner more flexible than just an "export". This is achieved using linked files (i.e. inode links) rather than copied files.

You seem to be right about Apple-Google deal expiration. It's up this year and if it expired in late June it explains the issue with no seeing locations in iPhoto and Aperture for Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion.
