iPhoto 11 - Problems With Photo Locations

I won't enter your quarrel as I don't think these forums should lead to such behaviors...

I only wanted to thank you for the tip about PhoShare, an application I didn't know before that will help me migrate my photo library to another software than the one provided by Apple (I don't want to rely anymore on Apple's software. Along the time I already had to migrate from Appleworks to Office, from /homepage to iWeb then from iWeb to Sandvox, from iDisk to OVH... just because oneday Apple decided they would abandon such feature or piece of software)

I did it!!!

I update to Yosemite and following the steps on this post Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store i'm now running Iphoto 9.6.1 (910.42), and maps work properly (apple Maps of course).

Sounds like the bottom line is that Apple and Google had a contract to co-support iPhoto (iLife?) for a specific timeframe, (which appears to have ended about (6/2015) that expired and now the feature is no longer available. Apple may or may not legally be permitted to rewrite support into the older apps that connects iPhoto to Maps. Or Google could perhaps offer to extend the terms. My system is complex and I don't have time to rebuild all the connected parts into a newer OS so that isn't currently an option. I'm a little annoyed that this goose egg was nesting and hidden in the system all this time.

I hope iPhoto is at least holding onto the location data, I'll be very annoyed if that is lost. A lot of work in making sure that was done correctly.It would be great to see the maps re-appear for me. Apple? Google? Don't you both have BILLIONS in cash? How easy might this be? Just agree to something and have a dev assign to vetting it for a day or a few to make sure an update won't interfere with anything. Do it for the digital faithful who've invested time into the tools.

Just to let you know, I've discovered yersterday that the feature is back with the version of iPhoto running with OS X Mountain Lion (eventhough it's still relying on Google Maps datas.

It's still not working with iPhoto on MacOs X SnowLeopard...

(I don't know with Lion, as I don't have any Mac running Lion)

It's not in Lion either, just checked it up, v.9.4.3

Definitely! It was GoogleMaps.

As you can see, when you search for a location, you still get Google results

On Sunday I obtained the location I was searching for and the map was displayed (either the standard or the satellite one) with the Google copyright on the lower left corner of the map.

Yersterday when I tried to make a screenshot, it didn't work anymore.

Maybe on sunday, I reached a proxy somewhere on the net, that still had the Google datas in a cache of some sort...

Terence, I read some of your posts and they are always useful.

I have OSX 10.9.5 and iPhoto '11 9.4.3.

I can not get places to work.

Is there any software version that would solve the issue without upgrading to Yosemite and using Photos?

I'll try to answer for Terence. if you can't see locations on 9.4.3, then chances are you can on iPhotos 9.5 via Apple (not Google) Maps. Both versions are compatible with Mavericks.

iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier use Google maps for the locations feature. Apple has not renewed it's agreement with Google regarding Google maps so that feature is broken in iPhoto 9.4.1 and earlier.

For iPhoto 9.5.1 and later, including Photos, the locations feature uses Apple's Maps.

Since you have 9.4.3 you should be able to upgrade to Yosemite and get iPhoto 9.6.1 by following he directions posted by Tererence Devlin in this post:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I can see iPhoto on my purchase list but the grey button on the right says "INSTALLED" hence is not hidden but it does not allow me to upgrade from 9.4.3 to 9.5.1. or later (I might miss some simple step but it just does not allow me to do anything with iPhoto on the App Store).

Do I understand correctly that you are suggesting that since I have iPhoto 9.4.3 even if I upgrade to Yosemite I should be able to get iPhoto 9.6.1. and not Photos? Will this solve the issue i.e. keep iPhoto with locations?

You must be running Yosemite before you'll be able to download 9.6.1.
