10.10.4 Keyboard not working after sleep (mac min)i

After the 10.10.4 upgrade I thought my computer will no longer wake up from sleep without a hard boot (kill from power button and then start up again). After all basic repairing of permissions, resetting nvram and SMC I turned power saving off hoping the computer would work as long as it does not sleep (it does).

Looking further into the issue I noticed that by quickly pressing the power button I can get it to wake up, only I can't enter my password on the login form. I took a wireless Microsoft media keyboard from another system and tested with it and it works.

So basically, since 10.10.4 my Apple USB keyboard does not work after sleep until the computer is completely restarted. With a quick google search I find others that have the same issue and all of them seem to have a previous gen Mac Mini like me.

specs (unchanged from before)

Mac Mini I7 (quad core)

16GB ram

1TB Sandisk Extreme SSD

Nec Spectraview display

Apple USB keyboard (A1243 EMC No: 2171 probably older gen)

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

The more reports Apple gets the more likely they will address your issue.

HOWEVER, I'm sure this does not happen to everyone, and I strongly suspect Apple employees use Apple keyboards. So maybe there is something else going on with your system.

Do you happen to have another USB keyboard you can try? USB devices (or their cables) do fail from time to time.

Have you tried a different USB port?

You have replaced your disk with an SSD (I do not object, as I've done the same for 2 of my Macs), but it is a difference.

Try booting into Safe Mode (it will be a slower boot). Safe Mode should avoid starting all non-Apple additions. Now experiment with sleep/wake and see if there is any difference.

Try a different newly created account (System Preferences -> Users & Groups).

If you have an external disk you can install a bootable system on, or clone your current boot disk, then set System Preferences -> Startup Disk and boot from the external. Does the behavior remain the same? Or if you really want to eliminate all possible installed software conflicts, install a clean version of Yosemite on an external disk and boot from that. See if there are any sleep/wake issues.

These are the best suggestions I can give at the moment.

I'm replying to the original post, but this is for everyone that has this keyboard problem.

Please, everyone report this to Apple via preferable the first, but at least the 2nd link (or even better BOTH). This forum is NOT communicating with Apple, so if you want relief, you need to get Apple attention.

Quick update on my experiences:

It does not seem to matter if I switch USB ports - it stays frozen.

Also it only happens when the Mac Mini has been asleep for a long time - if it goes to sleep briefly, it wakes up fine. Just when it is really snoozing does it not wake up.

Also it may be a quick solution - I suspect the first public beta of El Capitan will be out soon. It might fix it for those of us in the Beta Program. We will see. I reported it on my Feedback module in the Beta Program.

I have the same issue with my previous generation Mac Mini i7.

Mine won't resume from sleep by moving the mouse / typing on the keyboard.

None of the connected USB devices work.

I can access remotely from another Mac via VNC Screen Sharing.

Once connected it wakes up, checking the System Report via the remote connection, the USB keyboard and mouse are not present.

If I plug my iPhone into the USB cable that is permanently in the Mac Mini, this isn't recognised either.

Rebooting the Mac mini restores functionality and all USB connected devices appear correctly in the System Report.

I'm not sure if I need to file this separately..

I updated today and hit this issue. I was able to resolve it by installing the 10.10.4 combo update from OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 Combo Update

When installing this, I made sure my keyboard was unplugged at the time. After it completed (I did note that the combo took a lot longer to install than the, update via the app store) I plugged my keyboard back in after logging into my main account. The first USB port I tried (The one that I had unplugged from) did not work. I tried the other USB port and it started working again.

I just upgraded late 2012 mini 2.3 i7 about the same time to latest mavericks. I have the same issue, being usb port goes inactive when computer sits a while, but would work if moved to another port. Issue was with both Apple and Microsoft keyboards.

Tried common fixes with no success. It seems I have found a workaround until a fix comes out. I simply went to my sharing and shared the internet connection. I am sharing via my unused ethernet, but assume any available option would work. !!!!!!!!!!! This keeps the hard drive from sleep, but the mini uses so little power anyway it beats wearing the ports out.
