10.10.4 Keyboard not working after sleep (mac min)i

After the 10.10.4 upgrade I thought my computer will no longer wake up from sleep without a hard boot (kill from power button and then start up again). After all basic repairing of permissions, resetting nvram and SMC I turned power saving off hoping the computer would work as long as it does not sleep (it does).

Looking further into the issue I noticed that by quickly pressing the power button I can get it to wake up, only I can't enter my password on the login form. I took a wireless Microsoft media keyboard from another system and tested with it and it works.

So basically, since 10.10.4 my Apple USB keyboard does not work after sleep until the computer is completely restarted. With a quick google search I find others that have the same issue and all of them seem to have a previous gen Mac Mini like me.

specs (unchanged from before)

Mac Mini I7 (quad core)

16GB ram

1TB Sandisk Extreme SSD

Nec Spectraview display

Apple USB keyboard (A1243 EMC No: 2171 probably older gen)

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

The more reports Apple gets the more likely they will address your issue.

HOWEVER, I'm sure this does not happen to everyone, and I strongly suspect Apple employees use Apple keyboards. So maybe there is something else going on with your system.

Do you happen to have another USB keyboard you can try? USB devices (or their cables) do fail from time to time.

Have you tried a different USB port?

You have replaced your disk with an SSD (I do not object, as I've done the same for 2 of my Macs), but it is a difference.

Try booting into Safe Mode (it will be a slower boot). Safe Mode should avoid starting all non-Apple additions. Now experiment with sleep/wake and see if there is any difference.

Try a different newly created account (System Preferences -> Users & Groups).

If you have an external disk you can install a bootable system on, or clone your current boot disk, then set System Preferences -> Startup Disk and boot from the external. Does the behavior remain the same? Or if you really want to eliminate all possible installed software conflicts, install a clean version of Yosemite on an external disk and boot from that. See if there are any sleep/wake issues.

These are the best suggestions I can give at the moment.

Same problem here with a late 2012 Mac Mini.

All USB devices appear to be 'frozen' after awaking the Mac from sleep, so you're stuck in the login screen with no keyboard and no mouse.

The keyboard in question is a wired one from Apple, with a wired Microsoft "Basic Optical Mouse v2.0" plugged into it (...I kid you not, because I hate those amnesic wireless mice with lots of hidden buttons that don't go 'click' ;-)

Sometimes an external DVD writer and a Garmin Edge bike computer are also connected to the Mac's USB ports - it makes no difference.

For the past two years, the Mac has never had any USB issues.

Since the OSX 10.10.4 update last Friday, the USB devices hang every time when awakening from sleep - call that a coincidence!

The funny thing is that I awake the Mac by pressing the spacebar. The USB subsystem appears to 'die' during the wakeup process...

An answer may be forthcoming. I see the Beta for developers for 10.10.5 is out and when it goes public, it might solve this. I have been in the Public Beta and it is overall very helpful. I would suggest trying this 10.10.5 beta when it comes out. You can sign up for the Apple Public Beta at this link and go to the bottom of the page: https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/redemption#osx

Maybe forthcoming??

Can you tell me more?

It's definitively a bug introduced by the release of 10.10.4 (in combination with the new firmware/bootrom)

I don't know if it is fixed in El Capitan and if it is a problem in combination with Mavericks (but PRAM zapping, reset PMC, installing combo update or single 10.10.4 or doing a recovery install, all of this doesn't solve the problem)

Here is the link to the announcement to the Developers' Beta: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/07/14/apple-first-10-10-2-beta/

It is usually a few days and then the Public Beta follows. So if this new beta has a solution for our keyboard problem, we might get it solved now. When the full 10.10.5 version comes out, everyone else will have a solution (hopefully). So enrolling in the Beta program could speed up the solution for those of us in it.

It doesn't seem to be a keyboard specific problem. My late 2012 Mini does not recognise my Acer touch monitor and the built-in usb hub after waking up from sleep. The picture is fine, but the usb functions are gone, and it's all since the update to 10.10.4.

Moreover, when i update my iphone, i have to plug it into another port after restart, because it cannot connect to itunes.

It is the second sleep related problem with this type of Mac and Yosemite... i have registered on this forum a year ago, because my Mini froze after sleep, if a hdmi monitor with integrated speakers and speakers/headphones were attached in the same time - could not deal with the 2 audio outputs.

I will report the problem, but probably only the El Cap will solve the problem. I don't want to downgrade, because Apple brought back the TRIM support for 3rd party SSDs with this release 🙂

Same Problem here with Macbook Pro 13" Mid2014. Keyboard and Trackpad become unresponsive after long Sleep. Have to press the power button to put it back to sleep, rewake and then it works. However it then stops working after short while during normal use and only a hard reset is possible. This started to occur after 10.10.4 update and still persists in OSX 10.11 Public Beta

Hi Gang,

Same problem with a Macbook Pro model A1425 EMC 2672. OS X version 10.10.4

On wake from sleep built-in keyboard and trackpad are non-responsive. Tried sleep/wake several times but same thing. Requires re-boot.

Power settings: Computer sleep: Never, Display sleep: 30 min, Put hard disks to sleep when possible, Wake for Wi-Fi, Enable Power Nap. Interesting is that even though "Computer sleep" is set to "Never", it's still going to sleep.

I saw a post about an update being available but I'm not seeing it when I check updates (under app store). Last update I have is iTunes on 7/13.

Thanks.
