iOS 8.4 battery drain

I seem to be witnessing a drastic battery drain after the update to iOS 8.4. It's pretty bad, but I don't see anyone else talking about it.

iPhone 5, iOS 8.4, null

I too am noticing Battery Life dropping off a cliff since iOS 8.4 update.

Originally, I updated OTA and it was pretty horrific. So, I backed up, restored and re-installed via iTunes update ... it's better but still nowhere near the decent performance I was getting out the Battery on 8.3.

Has anyone else experienced this ? Has anyone found a fix ?

I've got everythign tweaked in the background to minimise usuage eg. Background App Refresh Off, Frequent Locations Off etc etc.

Any help appreciated ....

I have also been experiencing intense battery drain since 8.4 on a 5s. Never happened with any previous update. Unit initially was very hot as well, but that has since subsided as I've been running tests, etc. Usage and standby times are only minutes apart ALL THE TIME. The unit will not sleep properly--almost like the processor is stuck running. I have completely restored the phone and installed the WHOLE 8.4 OS. I have toggled everything off like location services, background app refreshes, etc. to unload the processor. Sometimes the highest percentage of battery usage is "background" activity in Music. The battery will drain completely inside of 4 hours without using the phone at all. I missed the opportunity to go back to 8.3 by a couple days. My 2nd Genius Bar (waste of time) appointment is tonight and the outcome will probably be like the last: check battery health; unit will check out then tech will say he/she cannot do anything else for me. I paid for an Apple product, only installed apps from the Apple store, and am running an Apple OS and they can't do anything else to help me. I'm tired of waiting for a patch or the next update. I can't use a phone that doubles as a hand warmer and cant be off the charger for more than 4 hours.

Hi,

Any progress with your 2nd appointment at 'genuis' bar? I've got the same problem, spent 1hr 30min on the phone to Apple support - useless.

Have an appointment with them tomorrow evening. This seems to be a common problem since the update but they won't admit it. It's a complete pain but if they brought out a fix quickly, I'd move on. As it stands this will be my 4th and last iphone.

The only thing I haven't done yet is a restore from itunes, (carried out a full reset but to no avail) although it seems lots of other have done that but the issue remains anyway. Any further guidance is much appreciated. APPLE SORT THIS OUT!!!

Have been facing the same problem. the only thing people come up with is battery saving tips. this is a real issue people. i have restored my phone atleast 18 times in past five days. the problem is stuck like anything. have called support and after running diagnostic they say that hardware is fine. i have read a post somewhere where a GUY took his phone to genius bar and they were unable to resolve the issue and said to the person we cant do anything for you.

APPLE PLEASE ADMIT THE PROBLEM AND LET US ROLL BACK. WHAT SHOULD WE DO WITH BRICK PHONES.

Spent an hour there in store last night, tech wanted to reinstall firmware, I told him I did that but he insisted his install was done differently. No improvement after I left. Phone was dead overnight just sitting as always. Tech told me he documented my visit (first tech did not a week ago) and I should come back in the morning if the problem persisted. No apps avail so he suggested I show up at opening to get floating spot. I did that and returned to the store this morning at 10am. I explained my my visit reason and the case was brought up by a new tech. She ran some diagnostics and saw the phone had a locked up compass and GPS so that was a new problem I didn't know about. Bottom line was the phone was out of warranty and she couldn't tell now if the hardware might be the problem in addition/or in lieu of the software issue. she told me a new phone would be $269. I told her this phone was going in the garbage can behind the counter if that was the case because I felt this was an Apple fault warranty or not and I would not be spending anymore money on iPhones. She checked with mgmt and came back telling me the phone would be replaced for free as a courtesy. So, I got a replacement which is what I wanted and it's working fine (on 8.3 out of the box). So I would do the following:

1 know your controls and how to unload the processor (fetching vs pushing, location services, poor signal issues,) explain you have diagnosed the problem

2. STRESS the fact your usage and standby times are the same--this in NOT normal. I'm hoping you do fall into this category.....

3 Be prepared to visit the Genius Bar more than once. make sure each visit is documented so you have a case history.

4 They won't roll back. Period. You can only get another phone as an outcome. It most likey will come with 8.3 like mine at which time you can decide whether or not to upgrade again 🙂 BUT any backup you did in 8.4 will be useless to you when you try and restore a phone running 8.3 with that backup later, I found this out this afternoon 😟

best of luck to you (and all with similar issues)

i have read your same "earth is flat logic" on other threads as well. if you cant comprehend the problem or offer a fix there is no need to put sarcasm in other peoples faces who are facing real problems. Everyone complaining about an issue is not a hysterical housewife to whom you will offer a lollipop solution to get some points 🙂. If you have a solution kindly let me know i will be highly greatful.

Thanks for update and tips.

I've got everything set up to use the minimum amount of power and I tried another restore via iTunes last night, when I plugged the phone in, it said there was a software issue on the phone and it then began an update which lasted well over an hour.

My phone turned itself on during that time ( i wasn't expecting that), however today the problem remains.

I go to bed with it 100% charged and by the time 8hrs has passed, it's down to around 30%, having done nothing.

My usage and standby aren't the same, is that good or bad? Also it gets very hot.

I was desperately trying to avoid wasting further time in having to make a trip into town to see the Genius guys but I'm at a loss as to what else to do, although I don't expect much progress. So many people are experiencing the same issue, they can't issue new handsets to everybody, yet they don't seem concerned about issuing a fix.

It's pretty much put me off buying another iphone now due to all of the inconveneince.

You state that you're having a problem with your phone. I'm wondering why you don't take it to an Apple Store for analysis. If they're unable to make your phone function to your satisfaction, just buy a different brand phone. That wasn't that hard, was it? It sure beats allegations about Internet postings.

My Dear Friend

You assume too much without knowing the facts. There are place in this world where there are no apple stores or genius bar guys. People still use iphone there. i assure you i knew my status before you trying to share that piece of wisdom with me. Moreover you saying that me buying another brand phone instead shows that not only you assume too much you also have a problem of un necessarily getting entangled in other peoples business. If $800 does not mean anything to you i will most happily share my bank account number with you to re imburse me. i am sure you will do that since you are so in love with apples reputation. As for me complaining Genius try searching "consumer rights" instead of earth is flat some day. Also this community is made to share problems and even on this thread people are sharing roughly the same kind of thoughts. read the post just above your last one.

like is said you can get lot of "woow" from hysterical house wives for lollipop solution but solution of this problem requires manning up as this happens to a real problem.

Have a nice day 🙂. Again if you do find a solution let me know i will be really greatful and thankful. Just a piece of advice dont wonder too much and dont shoot solution before knowing the problem.

Congrats icgchrish on getting a new iPhone from Apple.

I am assuming you had a iPhone 6 or 6 plus? Apple gave you a new 6 / 6plus?

I have a 4S (yes, I know its old but it does everything I want perfectly) and iOS 8.4 has killed my battery life too.

It used to go 2 days without needing a recharge.

I can barely go a morning now before it is dead.

Obviously Apple are not going to give me a new iPhone (& I don't expect one) but what the heck is going on at Apple to bring out an update (8.4) that has such a serious flaw.

Clearly I am in the market for a new phone, and was waiting for a 6S before laying down the cash, but I'm so ****** off with this 8.4 battery issue, and apples silence on the issue, I'm looking at other options. How can apple be trusted? Updates are supposed to improve stability, not wreck your phone. I seriously couldn't care less about the new features in 8.4, I only installed it hoping it would fix the iPhone 4 sound issue introduced in 8.3.

There is a new Sony phone my wife is raving about, which I will check out.

No wonder your share price tanked this week (lost 17 billion after announcing disappointing iPhone sales.)

Well this sort of rubbish (8.4 battery issue) will only hurt iPhone sales in the future, be prepared for another disappointing iPhone sales figure.

thanks Lawrence, I will try your advice. Your advice makes sense and might be the answer for me.

I will report back if it helped me.

I have no idea how one finds a "stuck" / incomplete / disrupted app update, but I did do a lot of updates before updating to 8.4 so your idea has merit for me.

You would think Apple would code into the update a check of your app's status and warn you of any issue BEFORE it goes ahead with the update.

But clearly Apple are more interested in singing the praises of whatever junk is new in their iOS update - what the **** is 'Apple music' and why should I care? - than performing a basic check of your iPhone and its apps before turning your iPhone into an expensive piece of junk.

I've got an old 4S. I can't imagine what people are feeling with a 6 & 6plus with this issue.

Under those conditions, why in the world would you purchase an Apple product?
