iOS 8.4 battery drain

I seem to be witnessing a drastic battery drain after the update to iOS 8.4. It's pretty bad, but I don't see anyone else talking about it.

iPhone 5, iOS 8.4, null

I have an Apple 5S--this one is my 3rd in a year. The first ($575+/- from T-Mobile) went swimming with me by accident when I jumped in my pool to save a 4 year old who couldn't swim (don't ask)...the 2nd was a courtesy replacement from Apple for which I paid $269 since the wet one had no insurance coverage. This replacement is the one they just gave me the other day to satisfy my issues. So, you see, having spent upwards of $800 for iPhones in a year's time, I was NOT going to dispense anymore cash for another.

In the event this is useful for anybody else or they have any idea what's happened to my back ups.....

Spent well over an hour with the genuis staff, team leader took over in the end. Diagnostics said the battery is fine, running at 80-90% and to say the phone is over 18 mths old, apparently that's good, so fine with that.

Came up as having a software issue, the guy said that this is causing the processor to run continually in the background which is causing the battery drain and the heat. Wanted me to set up as new but said I couldn't restore from a back up as this may pull back the issue. Told me to go home and store photos on my laptop. I have (now had) some important texts I've kept since I had the phone but they said no way of saving those. I wasn't happy to say the least.

They point blank refuse to accept it's anything to do with latest update and really couldn't care less if your next phone is an Android.

In the end, it was decided something called an 'dpu' (or something like that) should be done, which they did in store and told me to just back up when I got home as this just may well clear the issue.

Now, in store, both myself & 2 genius staff saw the last back ups having been done to iCloud & Itunes earlier this week, HOWEVER, when I got back and proceeded to restore, both said that there were no back ups having ever been done for this phone, or words to that effect.

Therefore my phone currently has lost my apps, photos and texts. In addition my Icloud storage available has gone up to 19.7MB from 13.8 as it was yesterday. I admit I'm at my wits end with . Couldn't get a call with Apple support until Saturday morning but literally feels like crushing the thing and never parting with another penny to Apple.

Totally understand there will be issues periodically with new software at least admit it, fix it and we can all move on. Sincerely dissapointed with Apple.

I'm having the same scenario as others, but I have to testing to back our claims.

I work in an IT department where we are refreshing our company with iPhone 6 phones and we are getting back their 5's. We also have an option to purchase our old iPhone for personal use. So I decided to go this route except that I was going to choose the best phone out of the bunch that were not being re-purchased. My colleague found 4 in good condition, so at this point he tested the battery. All four phones were already factory reset, so what he did is fully charge each one and then leave it for two days uncharged, unused, and in airplane mode. After the two days, 3 of them were around 30% and the fourth was at 98% battery life. The only difference we found was the phone with 98% battery life was on IOS 8.1.2 while the other three were on 8.4. So, just to be sure that it was the IOS and not the phone. He updated the phone that had 98% battery life to 8.4 and charged all four again. This next test was only about 20 hours. After the test, all phones were around 70%.

Not sure that this can be any more clear, but it seems something is going with IOS 8.4.

It would seem so, but if that's the case why does my phone on 8.4 get the same battery life as it did on 8.3, if not slightly better? With 250 3rd party apps, 5 email addresses, heavy use of iCloud, everything on (WiFi, Bluetooth, Location Services, Cellular Data, Background app processing)? I could go 2 days between charges, but I don't, because my regimen has always been to charge overnight, every night. And I always get through the next day with energy to spare. My "retired" iPhone 4S with 8.4 used as an iPod Touch goes 5 days between charges.

When you set up the phones as new did you turn on iCloud? Or leave it disabled?

You also said they were in Airplane mode. Airplane Mode phones frequently consume more battery life if there are any apps that are trying to use data; they keep retrying, and use energy to do so.

These phones were factory reset. No added apps, and we didn't sign into iCloud. Also note that before we updated to 8.4, the phone that was on 8.1.2 was also on airplane mode for 48 hours and only lost 2% battery life while the others lost 70%. Hope that helps.

Yes but you're not answering Lawrence's question. I have the same experiences that he has had but, in my case, it's two iPhones - mine and my wife's - with equal or better battery performance after updating to 8.4.

Understand... but this thread is not about answering why you and Lawrence's phones aren't having the problem. This thread is in regards to all of us who are having this problem from updating to IOS 8.4. That's great that your phones are working, but as I stated above, this has been thoroughly tested and verified.

Your argument suggests that this is not a problem due to the update, and that is just not true.

My argument demonstrates that your test procedures were faulty.

Okay so I have the same problem. I even changed my battery to a new one, did not help. I have iPhone 5c and now for a week after the 8.4 update I have a huge problem with heating and battery life. Battery is dead usually after a hour of use / 2-3 hours of standby. There is no matter wheter it is on airplane mode or every possible app open. I have restored my phone to see if it helps. It certainly did not. So I would suggest that Apple would do something about it. I live in Finland so there is no Genius Bar / etc Apple crap here. And no warranty anymore. Anyone who has some magic solution to this state?

I think all we can do is pray iOS 9 fixes this bug that our phones are afflicted with.

Apple have said that iOS 9 will have a "battery save" mode, which when turned on, will reduce the load on the CPU, slowing the phone down slightly to preserve precious battery life. This at least will help us somewhat to extend our current pityfull battery life.
