iOS 8.4 battery drain

I seem to be witnessing a drastic battery drain after the update to iOS 8.4. It's pretty bad, but I don't see anyone else talking about it.

Your are confusing background activity and background app refresh. Background App Refresh allows apps to run in background in the absence of any external stimulus. Any app that can receive Notifications (such as FB) is allowed to run when a notification arrives. This is not the same as Background App Refresh, which is a feature added in 8.0 that wasn't there before.

Lawrence... I am not confusing background activity and background app refresh... FB had push notifications switched off... it had Background App Refresh switched off... so how does FB get CPU time to be credited with "background activity" in the battery usage stats?

This is clearly an iOS 8.4 bug for allowing FB to burn CPU time and a FB bug for doing work when it should not. Both parties are to blame here.

Anyway... My post is just one data point... This thread exists because others are experiencing unusual battery drain with this latest iOS update.

100% agree with you. I always refuse to update my 5s ios. it came with 7.1.1 but because I bought lte plan from my cell provider and ios 7.1.1 did not come with 2G, 3G and LTE option toggle so I decided to update last week and it was horrible. I used to have 9-10 hours usage last week with 7.1.1 but now it only last 6 hours usage time plus the battery percentage indicator jumps alot and not accurate. The reason this thread exists because people notice horrible change in their battery behaviour with the same usage pattern after updating to 8.4. It is clearly a bug and software problem.

ahhh .. so that is what 'Push' is about with Battery Doctor telling me it is using level 4 energy to work the CPU.

I have all notifications turned off BTW ... except for AAA emergency road service and that is turned off until I use it .. as in the past it was an 'Always' turned on App. I have asked AAA to make it a 'when using' app for sending out location. As I want Emergency Road Service to know where I am at for the ICE issue.

Anyhow ... for the Battery Power to be USED ... and expended the iPhone must doing something.

The Doctor tells me that 5 energy power drain on top of the list is for 'location' .. it is because all these Apps that are turned off are sending out my location, or it is just the 'Find My iPhone' App that I have turned on to iCloud .. is always sending out location information to Apple Inc.

Apple is doing it just to keep tabs on me ... keep me safe ... looking out for my welfare no doubt .. without telling me or letting me know they are doing it.

Anyhow .. the point I want to make .. is that the Power Drain is being used for CPU work .. when I am not working the iPhone.

There has to be a purpose for it ... the software would not be buggy just to waste power for heating up what ever it can heat up in using the power for no purpose what so ever.

The older battery high cycle owners that do heat up ... I think are ending their lifespan ... unless someone out there has a low cycle 90 day old battery like I do that is heating up.

I just lose power other wise similar to every one else taking notice of it .. and the Apple Battery Usage tells me I only have 15 hours of standby last time I looked at it.

Battery Doctor App (which some tell me is a garbage App and get rid of it) .. at the same time tells me in its extrapolation that I have 23 hours of battery left.

When I got the iPhone 90 days ago ... (prior to the iOS upgrade) ... I recall it telling me that the Standby time as 36 hours.

That is my witness ... and the basis for my reasoning.

I Have been experiencing this too... I was thinking it had to do with the update to the music app? I'm not even using it... But when I go to usage it's always at the top (with background activity) I have tried everything... I don't know how to make it stop.. Lol my phone was at 100% last night and I woke up to 50%... I turned off all background refresh... Didn't help... If anyone would have any advice that would be so amazing:)

With the iMac (OS 10.10.4) there is a 'Force Quit' in the Apple Menu Bar on top of the screen .. and it will show you all the apps that are running or not responding when you click them to Quit. iPhone do not have a Force Quit - Finder service in its software to be sure stuff is turned off.

Odd that Apple will not have Commericals and Advertisments on the iMac .. but there are Commericals and Advertisments on 'PUSH' notifications are all over the iPhone. Why Apple wants Push notifications is beyond me as it serves no purpose for the customer user in making phone calls or sending text.

It is the Third Party Apps you really like and are useful that have Push notifications on it that I turn off all the time .. and my guess is to get rid of them Apps so you get rid of the commericals and advertisments that one can never read on the banners any way as the font is so small.

I have even turned off Amber Alerts ... that is a waste of time and energy to get a phone call for that.

Hey all,

same problem here since this morning. iPhone worked with 8.4 without any problem for days.

Unplugged it this morning after charging it over night and now I see the battery draining every other minute.

Only difference to yesterday: An update of the facebook app was installed automatically.

DId a new clean install of the iPhone and restored the backup: Problem persists.

Removed the facebook app, disabled the facebook account on the iPhone and rebooted the iPhone: Problem persists. So it was not the facebook app itself.

I'm actually pretty ******.

I had a similar problem last week. The first step is to find out which app is draining the battery. Go to Settings/General/Usage - Battery usage. It will display the apps that are using your battery. Mine turned out to be the Calendar app (the built in one). Another useful trick is to see which app is using cellular data, but only do this if you have plenty of data left in your monthly plan (or you have unlimited). Go to Settings/Cellular and reset statistics. Then turn off WiFi. Let the phone be on standby for about an hour. The go back to Settings/Cellular and see which app(s) have used data.

In my case my calendar used 100 MB in an hour, which is clearly a problem, because my entire calendar database is 20 MB. So what this meant is that the calendar app was stuck sending or receiving data and failing, and retrying forever. The fix was not easy; I had to the corruption in my calendar database that was causing this. I did, but it took several hours over 2 days.
