Back of Watch fell off

This morning when I took my Apple Watch (sports version) off the charger, the back stayed on the charger while the rest of the watch came off, connected to the back through a small ribbon cable. The back just fell off.

I use the watch pretty normally - wear it during the day, charge at night, wear it running for an hour 3 times a week. Don't wear it in the shower or anything like that.

I can place the back on the watch but it eventually just falls off again, and I'm sure the moisture seal is shot.

Looks like the back is just glued on and prone to falling off. Even my relatively ugly Pebble Watch used screws and a rubber gasket. Apple just squirted a bit of glue around the edge, pushed the back on, and called it a day.

Final follow-up to my original post. Apple ended up replacing the broken watch with a new one, just arrived today. The guy helping me at the Apple Store said he'd never had someone come in with the back falling off, but he had seen it mentioned in an internal service bulletin.

So, if the back of your watch falls in, take it to an Apple Store or send it in. They know about the problem.

And that's the end of my story - unless the back falls off again :-)

(N.B. I still think gluing in a part that's under a fair amount of stress and heat is a strange decision, but I concede the point that I'm not a glue expert. Hope the number of us that had this problem stays small!)

Good advice, of course. However a) this isn't a staining issue, and b) I cleaned it regularly since the last time the back feel off and this had little or no impact on the time until this happened again with watch #4 (about 3

months each time). I suspect the issue is that sun cream that is on the skin gets under the lip of the back cover - and hence cannot be removed by cleaning. A sad state of affairs for a product I love.

As I said in my previous post, I followed the guidelines for the watch in terms of cleaning for the 4th watch - and it seemed to make little or no difference in how long it was until the back fell off. It is great you are trying to be responsive in this community - but be a little careful you do not alienate your loyal customers (I've owned every iPhone Apple has made and most of the Macs as well) by implying it must be their fault. The watch is the most personal device Apple has ever made - and as such it must be useable by people in the way the go about their lives. As someone who has had skin cancer, I need to wear sun cream. I follow the guidelines, and the back still falls off. As an engineer, this seems like a design flaw that will affect at least some section of the user base. Not considering this possibility (and just implying the user is at fault) does not serve Apple well.

My husband is on his third watch after back came off - the back of mine came away this weekend so I too will be expecting a third one. No reason for it happening to mine as we were in a cold climate so sun cream not required. Do think this problem should be more widely publicised so that Apple do something before people are put off buying the latest Apple Watch 2

Interesting picture - for you it was literally the back of the watch that popped off. For me it was the glass front. I'm wondering if there are two separate problems going on here - yours being somehow associated with the charging process (heating up in back?) and mine being associated with the glue that holds the glass covering to the body of the

Both my husband & I are on the fourth versions of the Apple Watch 1st edition. Beginning to know when the back will fall off - the letters on the screen become very big and the watch needs to be rebooted, a few days later the back comes away. We do both love our Apple watches but will change to the new model if/when it happens again.

My wife and I got 1st gen watches the day they were released in the stores in June '15. I got a sport, she got a stainless steel. This past Sunday, 7/2/17, she informs me that the back popped off her watch. She stuck it back on and is wearing it at the moment. However, in as bizarre a coincidence that you can have, not even an hour after the back popped off of hers the front face popped up on mine! What the heck! I can't wear mine because the face is loose. Because of the holiday I haven't been to the store yet, but needless to say we'll be scheduling a visit.

Thanks for the link! I will send feedback. I've always appreciated Apple's design and build integrity - all the more reason I'm perplexed and disappointed by what looks like a very poor design decision to glue a key part of the watch in place.

I know it's a small thing in the grand scheme of things for one's watch fall apart by design, but part of the satisfaction of Apple products has been pleasure of the object and the integrity of the materials. Apple invites this scrutiny. Maybe they need a video extolling the virtues of gluing expensive watches together and calling it a day? 😉 Would Philippe Patek ever do this?

My local Apple store had the same watch in stock but wouldn't replace it, so I'm waiting for a box to ship it in for repair. I'm now wearing it with tape holding the back in place.

This is interesting... I have been wondering how easily the back is to remove. If there is eventually a way to charge from the hidden port, it would be a cool option to remove the ceramic back and replace with a flat piece of metal to make the watch more comfortable and slimmer (I do not use the heart rate sensor and find the bulging back a bit obtrusive).

Lot's of companies?

Name one, That charges $740.00 for the watch, no forget that, just name one period, and did you even read my answer, it mentioned nothing about body heat or even returning the watch, it mentioned the heat of the battery charging the watch, that is way hotter than body heat, it is a poor decision to glue the back on the watch, but it does not make a pebble better and my reply once again was to answer someone's question, if you or anyone else do not have the same problem, it does not require a reply.
