iOS9 + Windows Vista

Hi everyone!

So, I still have the good, old Windows Vista and I can't update my iTunes anymore because of my too old software. So what can I do when I just updated all my devices to iOS9 but they are no more compatible with my iTunes anymore because iOS9 REQUIERS the newest iTunes 12.2?😕

I'm not gonna buy new software because someone forgot about people who doesn't change their

Windows-software every year.😠

Greetings,

I just ran into this same issue....my iPhone updated to iOS 9, and immediately caused iTunes to popup a window saying the phone can't be accessed because it requires iTunes 12.2.2 or later....yet that version won't install on my Windows Vista PC?? So now my phone is prevented from connecting to iTunes....Apple, you need to fix this!

Sadly there isn't much you can do other than upgrade your Windows installation or start treating your iOS 9 devices as standalone devices. It is somewhat unfortunate that the minimum version requirements of iTunes aren't made more prominent as part of the upgrade process when updating over the air. As I understand it some people have managed to use iTunes 12.1.2.27 to upgrade a device to iOS 9 which iTunes then can no longer talk to; that just doesn't make any sense at all. 😕😮

This is a massive f-up by Apple. When I knew IOS 9 was available II did the following:

  1. Start iTunes, tell it to check for updates (iTunes updates that is, not IOS). No updates available.
  2. Backed up my iPhone using iTunes.
  3. Installed the IOS update.
  4. At this point when the 'phone rebooted iTunes told me that I needed a newer version in order to communicate with the 'phone.
  5. So I manually found & downloaded iTunes 12.3 only to discover that it won't install on XP (or Vista).

Fortunately for me the update to IOS 9 didn't screw up the 'phone, otherwise despite having taken a backup first I would be completely screwed. Even more fortunately for me I do have access to another PC with Windows 7, but no doubt Apple have left a whole load of people high and dry with no warning whatsoever. Curiously they seem to be doing their best to help Microsoft... I doubt I will buy any more Apple products.

Downgrading isn't supported, but there may be a very small window in which this approach will work.

I've not tested it, nor am I recommending it, just letting you or others know it might be a slim possibility.

Folks, all may not be lost here!

I actually called Apple Support yesterday, and worked my way up to their chain to an iOS 9 product specialist. When I explained my situation, he fully agreed that this was a serious issue, and that he would talk to the developers on both the iOS 9 and iTunes sides, although he said he couldn't guarantee me anything.

He called me back about 6pm last night, and said that the iTunes team had released a 12.1.3 version of iTunes that was both iOS 9 and Vista compatible, and that he would be emailing me the download links. When I got the email, and followed the links, it took me to a page to download iTunes, but the text on the page said it was for version 12.1.2, posted April 2015. Since that would be older than the 12.1.27 version I already have installed, I emailed the support rep back, asking if this was truly the right links, or if the text on the page just hadn't been updated, as I didn't want to accidentally make things worse by installing a back-leveled version.

After I sent him that email last night, it occurred to me that if they really HAD created a new version of iTunes to fix this, that maybe it would be automatically found by the Apple Software Updater now. So I started Apple Software Updater, and sure enough, it now found iTunes version 12.1.3 as available! I let it download and install, and viola! iTunes would again sync correctly with my Vista desktop!

I don't want to provide the links here that the support rep gave, since I'm still not sure he sent me the right links....but I'd suggest that everyone having this issue do what I did, and go run the Apple Software Updater, to see if it also finds a new iTunes version 12.1.3 to install on your Vista (or maybe even XP!) machines!

Yes, someone posted a link in another thread. I've updated my user tip Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates with the latest links as follows:

iTunes with iOS 9 support for Windows XP 32-bit and Windows Vista 32/64.

...Maybe it is time to to think about switching to Mac Hardware, as opposed to Windows based PC?

Just a thought......as you seem to be so extremely unhappy with Win OS right now! I understand it wont help you for now, but surely a better option for the future on the long run; that is if you like or can adjust to Mac, that is in fact a lot easier than most people think :-)Cant help you with your Win issues unfortunately, as I only work on Mac when running such updates...

Good luck!
