Podcast app crashing in iOS 9

I just installed iOS 9 on my iPhone 6. When opening the podcast app I get a white screen, "Updating Library" and then it crashes after about 15 seconds. Anyone else experiencing this?

I've quit the app.

Restarted the phone.

Tried putting phone in airplane mode and opening the app.

Same result each time.

iPhone 6, latest ios 9, about 170 podcast, all audio.

Same problem, constant crashing during downloads (I download, rack and stack a playlist for the day via wifi to save on celldata). However, once the downloads are down, more stable than less...but just by a bit.

  • Has anybody found a tour or manual for the new interface?
  • What is the purpose to the "add to up next" button?
  • UpNext Where?
  • And if I can find the UpNext list, can I "rack & stack" it into a play order?
  • Does ordering my podcasts in "my podcasts" affect the ranking of UpNext?

Exact same issue. Tries to update library and hangs. Have tried hard reboot of iPhone 6, airplane mode trick, updated iTunes to recently released version and resynced. No luck.

Subscribed to about 30 podcasts...

Filed a bug report. Might be a good idea to do that since this thread is marked "solved." File bug reports for the iPhone here:

I have watched PODCASTS slide down further with each update. So disappointed. I'm sure I must be in the slim minority of Apple users, but I LOVE PODCASTS, AND HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING MANY OF THEM FOR YEARS!!!!!

iOS9 update on my iPhone 5s has killed Podcast app. Just crashes when I try to open it. I've restarted device many times, tried closing all settings on Podcasts and reset my phone. THIS IS DISABILITATING MY PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use Podcasts heavily on my iPhone.

This app has slipped to beyond the back burner. I HATED THE ITUNES UPDATES THAT RUINED PODCASTS FROM THE START.

Even with a bug fix, I get to look forward to Video Podcast in a small screen, instead of full screen??

I did a support chat with apple about this yesterday. Here are the instructions I received:

As we discussed, here are some steps that may help resolve the issue without you compromising your data.

We want to first start with a backup to iTunes, I recommend making this an ecrypted backup as it will back up the most amount of data for you, make the password easy for you to remember. Please follow these steps closely.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977

Once the backup is complete, we want to go into Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > (This iPhone) > and this will show a list of apps, scroll down until you see Podcasts and turn that off/white.

Once off, go to Settings > iCloud > Backup > Back Up Now.

Once complete, Erase and restore from this iCloud backup.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

If you would need to chat us back in regarding the issue you were experiencing today, your case number for today was 940331675.

1) Go to https://getsupport.apple.com

2) click on "See your cases and repairs", which us located below the product buttons.

3) Enter your case number & email address.

4) Click "Contact Apple about this case".

5) After that, click on the option of choice to connect with us by chat or phone

They also said that is more people contact support about the issue, the faster they may resolve it. I'm not doing the restore because it always messes something up for me and decided to use another app for now, but if you do decide to do the restore, make sure you create a back up without podcast app marked or it may not work as others on this thread have indicated.

I try to use Apple's apps where ever possible, but I too also started using Overcast. The only thing Overcast is unable to do is to sync podcast listening progress with iTunes on my laptop, but iTunes sync has always been so buggy, I often had to manually modify my listening progress anyway. I think Overcast syncs listening progress between devices just fine.

If it helps, I deleted a load of content off my saved podcasts by going into settings ->general-> storage &icloud usage -> manage storage-> podcasts then you can swipe from the right as usual and delete off whole podcasts. To be fair I had a load of old stuff in there I never listen to. Got it down to about 2.4GB and so far seems to work OK. This was good as you can't delete from within the app as it keeps crashing of course after 5 secs.....

I am also having the same issue. I've tried everything but the full restore but am reluctant to as I've only seen one person say that helped.

I'm looking into downgrading back to 8.4.1 has anyone else tried that approach? I'm also on the beta program, but rarely install beta releases. I've heard from other forums that the 9.1 beta does NOT fix this issue so I'm not sure it's something that Apple is actively working to resolve. The podcast app may just be in Sherlock status at this point.
