iTunes 12.3 installation error on Windows 10

The Apple Software update tried to update iTunes 12.2 Windows 10 64-bit to iTunes 12.3 but failed. I downloaded the installer (iTunes6464.exe) and tried to install iTunes. Every time it is failing with an error message that says - "package required to install could not be run". I thought uninstalling the iTunes 12.2 would help, but it didn't. And now I am without iTunes on my computer because I can't install the new one!

Can someone please help?

Press WinLogoKey+R, type Regedit in the Run dialog and press Enter/Return.

Click Edit > Find, type in itunes6464.msi (or the name of the problem .msi if different), change the Look at boxes so that only Data is ticked, then click Find Next.

You should find it somewhere like:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\{Long string of letters & numbers}\SourceList

Right-click on the immediate parent key with the long string of letters & numbers that contains the SourceList with the reference to the .msi file and click Export, save it to say the Desktop with the name iTunes.reg so the data can be restored if removing it doesn't help. Now right click on the key again and select Delete from the context menu. This should stop the Windows Installer from looking for the .msi when you reinstall iTunes.

If the install still won't go through then double click the iTunes.reg file you made to restore the data to the registry, then use the method shown at Install missing components to unpack the installer of your previous iTunes installation and extract the .msi file you require. Double-click this to uninstall the component. There are links to recent builds of iTunes in the Older versions section of the user tip Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

I believe I followed all the instructions correctly and still get an error. Here's what I have going on:

Itunes 12.2.2.25 on Windows 10 laptop

Downloaded current iTunes install package and ran it. Said it could not find the itunes6464.msi file so I followed the above instructions to remove the itunes6464.msi key. Attempted to install and still received the following error: "The older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."

I then tried to uninstall iTunes and it does not want to uninstall. Here is the message "The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support personnel."

So I have no way to upgrade, no easy way to uninstall. I tried Revo Uninstaller and it doesn't even show iTunes as an option to uninstall,

I am at a loss for what to do. Can I manually clean iTunes from the computer? I have backed up the .itl and other files so I don't lose information on playlists and the music files. I assume I would need to uninstall all other apple products like bonjour, ASU, mobile etc. That isn't difficult. Then I would need to delete the iTunes folder where the executable is. It's the registry that is a bit confusing since I don't know what keys to remove without causing a crash of my system.

That did it. Thank you for the assistance.

I actually used what you provided to uninstall iTunes. The MS Fixit never finished after a very long time and then something strange happened, the computer shut down with no warning. That was initially a "oh #$%" moment but after a normal startup I was able to install the iTunes 12.3.0.44. Problem solved.
