iOS 9 update mail shows as unread? All 43000!

I did the update to iOS 9 on my 6, and now my email icon shows 43,000+ as if they're al unread. The usual "mark as unread" isn't working.

I had the same problem, 45000 plus emails,

it seems to be an issue with POP accounts,

if you go to your mail settings and turn off the account you suspect then go and look. I have 4 on my phone, I turned off the pop account and 45,000 went instantly down to 66 which is the number synced with my MS exchange account as my other 2 accounts have no unread.

perfect!

I turned the pop account back on and all 45000 came back on the badge.

so I then deleted the POP account and re installed and it seemed to work for me

good luck!

What happens is that the phone keeps loading up old messages from the inbox on the actual mail server.

Most people don't ever move these messages so the inbox is enormous

Yes Apple should have handled this properly but they haven't so good luck waiting for a fix.

Meanwhile this is what to do to get around the problem:

Go into your mail on the actual server-iinet, gmail or wherever and move ALL messages out of your in box into a folder on that server.

e.g set a folder up called Sep2015, for example, and move all messages from your in box into it. Don't worry they will still all be safe and will also be on your iphone or computer or wherever you have already loaded them.

Once the server inbox is empty go into your phone and set all messages there to "mark as read".

Now it won't keep loading up old messages and the unread count will work as before.

This happened the last time there was a major upgrade -apple has not catered for it properly again.

BTW if you have iinet it will only let you move a max of 200 messages at a time to a folder-this is a pain but worth the effort

I had 1 unread email in the inbox of my Exchange email account. I tried marking all as unread then read; didn't help. I went into the account on my computer and did the same. Still nothing. What worked for me was going into my iPhone mail settings and changing the Mail Days to Sync for the account to 1 Day (it was set on 1 month). I went back to the account and refreshed the inbox and the unread phantom was gone. I went back to the settings and changed it to 3 Days, refreshed, then 1 week, refreshed, etc., until I got back up to 1 month. Now, back on 1 month the unread phantom in the inbox hasn't returned. Good luck.

I do not think this applies to POP3 accounts:

"What worked for me was going into my iPhone mail settings and changing the Mail Days to Sync for the account to 1 Day (it was set on 1 month"

Can you describe exactly where you see the "Mail Days to Sync" setting and exactly how to get to it? I do not see those settings in any of my POP accounts. Thanks.

I had a similar issue since I updated to iOS 9. I had a red 27 on my icon that would not go away. After reading a lot of the posts here, I realized it was coming from the one POP3 email account I had on my phone (I detected this by turning off the notifications one at a time unto the red number went away).

Once I narrowed it down to my POP3 email account, I went to that account via Webmail on my desktop computer. I have my email set to delete after 14 days, or after I delete it from my computer. YOu see, I use multiple computers to pull email from that account, so I leave it there to give me time to get to it with my other computers (iPad, laptop, desktop) before I delete it.

I went into the Webmail and made sure I had all the emails in the Inbox for that account on y computer, and then deleted all the emails from the Webmail (This deleted them from my server). I then asked my iPhone to go back and check for new mail and magically, the annoying red number was gone.

I basically took a few different people's ideas and tracked my problem down. I hope it can work for others.

Have a good day!

Ron

Go to Settings,

then Mail, Contacts, Calendars,

then Exchange (which is my email account),

Then near the bottom is "Mail Days to Sync".

Change your setting to 1 day, and then go to your mail icon and refresh your mail.

Once refreshed, go back and change the sync days back to your setting.

Hope it works for you like it did for me!
