iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

GGreetings. Thank you for your solution. I had this problem with a failed backup and to add insult to injury lost about 2.5GB of iCloud memory to boot and was unable to retrieve it until I came across your solution. I was under the impression 9.0.2 fixed the 'backup glitch' but it appears it did not. Sounds encouraging that 9.1 will finally fix it? (See posts above) Hope Apple realizes that as of yet it still is a bug in OS 9. I am still not able to make a backup. Backup hangs at about 4 minutes to go with 2.1 GB memory left in my cloud storage. (Manual backup on iPad 3 64 GB iOS 9.0.2, WiFi plus cellular but no SIM card installed.)

I too cannot do a backup since upgrading to iOS 9. I've read the posts here and followed some of the suggestions. I deleted my last backup, so it's a good thing I have one in iTunes. One user said he/she had the backup run for 20 minutes, then got the latest backup could not be completed message. I waited for NINE HOURS, then got that message. I also turned off Find my iPod, which did not help. That's probably because I have a situation no one else has mentioned. When I go in to my list of apps[settings> iCloud>storage>manage storage>(device)] all of them are turned on to be backed up. There's nowhere enough room for all of them in my free 5GB of storage, so I turn off most of them. When I go back to that later, they're all turned on again. But the really odd thing is that below the app name, where it's supposed to show the amount of storage space it would use to back up that app (1.9GB, 4.6KB), it says, "No data" on all of them. So above that, it says, "Next backup size 0 bytes." So I guess if I got it to do a backup, it would have nothing in it? Any ideas, anyone?

Greetings Becky. My situation is identical to yours and it seems to take forever to switch off the backup option for each app.Apple should add a switch that does them all! If you leave the screen ie to start a backup and return to the manage memory screen all the apps are switched on again so how do you do a backup with the apps switched off for backup?

LEts hope Apple gets this right in 9.1!

Same with my iOS 9 (iphone5). But only on two of 4 devices. I have problem with huge backup size. When I switch off backup of all applications (it tooks more than 20minutes😠), it says, that next (first) backup has 2,9GB on iPhone and 2,8GB on iPad (4gen). Both devices are associated to one apple ID. On other devices, which have another IDs, the "clean backup" after switching off all applications has 77MB on iPhone 5 and 170MB on iPad Air.

There must be some special bug associated to my Apple ID. I wonder what data are in 2,9GB backup size, if I want to do a "clean Backup"😕

If you are having this problem, here is how you can troubleshoot:

  • Reset Network Settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
  • Delete older backups that you do not need. To do this, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage
  • If there is an iOS update, upgrade your device
  • Reset your device by holding down the home button and the sleep/wake button together until the screen goes black and you see the Apple logo.
  • (Before doing this, you may want to backup your device using iTunes). Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > Select your device that you are unable to backup. Then wait for a few seconds (Backup Options should be loaded completely before you proceed – no spinning wheel). Then Tap Delete Backup. After your backup is deleted, tap Settings > iCloud > Back up and turn iCloud Backup off then on again. Then tap Back Up Now.

I've managed to perform manual backups to iCloud but have yet to get automatic backup working. I mean, it's turned on, but it's not backing up. I've tried basically every solution posted, turning backup off and on, restarting device, deleting my entire iCloud backup for this device, renaming the device, turned off "Find my iPhone".

Don't really want to sign out of iCloud on the iPhone completely either..
