After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

I m having the same problem have spent 3 days on the phone with Apple and still not solved. Loosing emails for my childs school is a huge factor

Apple please find a fix in today's age we all depend on our emails these are now our offices. This is really now a massive problem for me and many other users out there. Some of these files I can no longer get back at all.

Thank you

This is a user discussion forum only. This seems to be a widespread problem. The best way to notify Apple is by using their feedback link: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone

Reports on this forum are that use of a 3rd Party email app such as MyMail or Alta Mail is a credible workaround so you may want to do do that until Apple responds with a fix. Good luck.

One good thing that has surfaced from this ios9 mail app bug is how I don't miss Apple's mail app even a smidgeon anymore. The 3rd party app I've been using for the past week has been fantastic! And it was free too!! A couple of things I can do with the new mail app I'm using (myMail) that I couldn't do in Apple's mail app was to be able to view multiple email accounts with a single mail app (i.e. my verizon and yahoo accounts). In addition, I like being able to create email folders, and move specific emails into those user defined folders...a feature Apple mail also lacked! The only thing I regret is not looking sooner for a better 3rd party mail app all these years I've been an iPad user. Apple had me hypnotized into thinking their versions of apps are always superior....not anymore. 😕

Thanks captnfi for that info on MyMail. I like the ability to create user defined folders for message archiving - that's a nice feature.

I Have the same problem. This needs to be fixed urgently. Emails should be available till deliberartly deleted.

But mine is telling me that my password is incorrect, it deletes and then they pos up with unable to remove msgs.

This has only come up since ios9 I do save on my server and went in to delete there. so it's down to 140.

I also lost all my attachments..

I downloaded myMail and went to set it up and as soon as I entered my Earthlink account info it took me to a screen to set up a Microsoft ID or log in to my Microsoft account (I don't have one, not planning to set one up any time soon). Do you have to go through M$ to use myMail?

If so, I guess I need to try the other alternative - AltaMail.

Related to the topic in general, I've heard back from both the Apple support folks I've had dealings with on the whole POP content destruction issue but with no sense of when (or even if) iOS is going to properly support POP email again in the future.... 😟

After you posted I tried again - and it went right in to my Earthlink account - but only downloaded emails up to the day I first tried it (two or three days ago). I logged back out of Earthlink, then had to enter account/password again, and it was back to asking me for a Microsoft login. So, I deleted myMail and bought the full version of AltaMail. Still working on finding my way around on that. It (and myMail) are positively gaudy looking compared to Apple's Mail - they both look like K9-Mail on Android (which I have messed with because the default email client on my little Asus MeMO Pad tablet was confused about how POP worked as well - or at least showed some - but not all - of the same symptoms). But if they work properly, that's the main thing right now.

I have other things to do than just do self-computing-support and one of the reasons I (up to now) have preferred Apple stuff is so that I had much less of it to do. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

Here's hoping 9.1 beta 6 reteaches Applie's iOS Mail app how POP emails work.

(for anyone who is curious - I got the MeMO Pad to just taste what Android was like - you never know when you have to do computing support for your kids. Since I got my iPhone 6+ late last December it hardly ever gets powered up.)

TO tell you the truth, I really don't care anymore if Apple fixes their email bugs in a future ios release, because even if they do fix their issues, I won't be using their email app again, unless they allow multiple email accounts and allow users to create user-definable folders to store emails. When using myMail, I never log out of my accounts (Verizon/Yahoo). I'm always logged in. This app has not hiccuped yet, and I've been putting it through its paces for the past few days.

Oct 14, 2015 11:32 PM in response to captnfi

I don't get your comment about multiple accounts. I have five set up in Apple Mail on my iPhone and can look at them collectively or individually as I choose.

So far I have two of them - the most active two - set up in AltaMail. But the user interface is so busy I'll be glad to go back to Apple Mail if they fix it for POP. If they decide to just admit they've orphaned POP accounts, then I'll learn to live with AltaMail, I guess...

I do get the bit about other folders....but that's more a POP limitation that apparently myMail has a workaround for. AltaMail may as well...if so I haven't found it yet.

Oct 14, 2015 11:57 PM in response to Bernard Cawley

Yes, you are correct. I was wrong with regards to Apple mail's ability to create/manage multiple email accounts. My apologies!

WHy would the creation of a user-definable folder capability in a mail app be a POP limitation? Shouldn't any mail program be able to create folders and allow users to move their important or similar emails into these folders regardless of email protocol?

Hi Lawerence. I am here in the Uk and I have contacted Apple via the feedback at least 5 times and spoken to a advisor whom have been no help. I am constantly getting the message 'This message has not been downloaded from the server' even though its been downloaded on my iphone. All been happeing since updating to iso9. I have even deleted my email account and reloaded by ensuring its set up as Pop 3 not imap, and the settings mirror those in PC. But still I am getting the same message.

I do get the odd email that still can read after 24 hrrs - which is strange. In the meantime I am remialing important message son my phone to a gmail account which works ok.

Do you know if this problem will ever get fixed or not, and is it effecting other users in the Uk as I have not come across anyone in the UK with same problem. This problem does not seem to affect Hotmail or gmail email accounts

After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?
