After ios9 update my emails with attachments won't open and say "message not yet downloaded from server". They were there previously. How do I get them back?

Hi Neilfrombushey heath. I am in the UK using a BTconnect account. I have sent feedback to Apple countless times and had one response from a Senior Advisor (posted here earlier). Like others, I am now using MyMail and it works great with no problems at all. I like it. I have abandoned Apple mail altogether as I have no confidence in a solution.

I do get the odd email that still can read after 24 hrrs - which is strange. In the meantime I am remialing important message son my phone to a gmail account which works ok.

Do you know if this problem will ever get fixed or not, and is it effecting other users in the Uk as I have not come across anyone in the UK with same problem. This problem does not seem to affect Hotmail or gmail email accounts

As far as I can tell it affects everyone with a POP email account, and in a more limited way, everyone with an IMAP account. IMAP is not as big an issue, because the authoritative copy of all messages are preserved on the server. However, if you don't have an Internet connection you will not be able to see some messages on your iOS device.

I'm not sure why some messages remain for a while, and others don't. One possibility I have considered is emails are cached in RAM, but not written to storage. So they will remain until iOS needs RAM for another app and frees the RAM used by the mail app.

As to if or when it will be fixed, I have no information. I don't think it was an intentional change, so it should be fixed. But I don't know for sure.

HI NeilfromBushey Heath - I'm also UK based with a btconnect account. I started using Alta Mail as my work around earlier this week & so far so good. Still working my way around it to find out everything that it offers, but already liking the folder//file option. I think Apple may have shot themselves in the foot with this one - even if they provide a fix will people feel able to return to Apple's mail app confident that there won't be another disastrous hiccup further down the line?

YOu don't need to receive emails anymore with Apple's mail app if you are using the myMail app. Just deactivate all active accounts in your "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars" settings area, and move your Apple mail app out of your front page to the last page (get it out of the way). Move myMail to the front page, favorites list along the bottom of the screen.

Here is another inconsistency: 2 Sent emails show in the message list and both show the first few lines of the message text. However when I open them one message has the full text of the sent mail while the second message shows only the not downloaded from server wording even though the part of the message text is visible in the message list. The message list view of messages with attached files shows a paper clip, yet when opened there is no message content.

Apple needs to allow any 3rd party mail apps to be the default mail app. They need to do the same with browsers. Their restrictions/limitations with regards to 3rd party app functionality is a little too monopolistic. Give their customers a choice instead of "my way or the highway".

I would not expect for obvious reasons that Apple would give that any consideration. I also do not believe this as an appropriate forum to address what is a policy issue and one that holds potential ramifications going far beyond i devices.

This has been Apple's business model from the start, that's why they lost the PC battle years ago; "their way or the highway" mentality I doubt that they're going to change any time soon. It's worked for them this long largely because the iPhone took the phone market by storm but now there are equal or better platforms to be had. I wouldn't expect admission of guilt, explanations, or fix estimates for the current issue prior to a fix. Releasing preliminary data / info can be as bad as the problem itself. I suspect we'll just have to wait and hope for the best.

DO you remember not too long ago when Apple released their own version of a Map app, and removed Google maps from their app database? Customers were irate!! Apple eventually brought back google maps. Apple's map app was junk compared to Google's. If enough customers speak out, Apple will change their "my way or the highway" attitude.

An explanation or fix estimate before a fix is released is not in Apple's DNA so I do not expect we'll see that. I agree that imposing certain limitations on 3rd party apps is part of Apple's business model. As a long time user of Apple products I remain more than satisfied.

HUH?! Apple did not bring back Google Maps. GOOGLE made a map app for the iPhone. And it wasn't eventually. Google Maps was available as an app immediately after the iOS version that dropped the built-in Google Maps was released. Apparently Apple notified Google of this change in plenty of time for Google to have an app ready. Likewise for the You Tube app that was originally built in, but is now available in the app store. And Apple Maps is still the default map app in iOS 9. It's gotten a lot better, almost as good as Google Maps. But the hands-down winner in maps for iOS is Waze; beats both Apple Maps and Google Maps (although Waze is now owned by Google, it is still run as a separate company).

Yes I do recall that. Reacting to customer feedback on a particular app is not changing a business model. That's also a far cry from allowing 3rd party mail and browser apps to be the default on Apple's devices which is changing the business model. I have no doubt that Apple will fix what needs to be fixed.
