Text message notifications on iOS 9 not recognising contacts

Since upgrading to iOS 9, any text message notifications seem to appear with the number rather than a contact name, but if i open the message app they are listed against the correct contact name.

This means that no custom text notifications are working either as the notification doesn't seem to be able to link the number to the contact record. It seems to work for iMessage, but anything sent as a normal text comes through as a number not the stored contact. I've tried the usual - reboot, switching off dial assist etc, but none of that has made a difference. I've also tried making sure the contact record has the same format as the number showing in the notification (e.g. with +44 in front) but that hasn't helped either. Can anyone help?

I tried almost everything mentioned above. Finally, I edited the contact for just one of the phone numbers affected within my iMessages by adding a +1 to the beginning of the number. Went back to my Messages app, and all names had reappeared.

Maybe this will work for someone else? Soooooo frustrating! And weird.

I am also getting this, very very frustrating. When I turn imessage off or sign out of the cloud, then normal sms messages come through with names in the notifications. So I think it must be either an Imessage or icloud issue with the Notifications Centre..

If you change notifications to alerts, then you will get the contacts name, although the notification centre will still have the the number..

I am also seriously thinking of leaving crApple after our 20 odd year relationship. Just utter junk now days..

Nope, still a duff phone unfortunately. Going to Samsung, most I know who left crapple and went to Samsung have done nothing but sing there praises. I am now fed up dealing with a company that just wants to wrap a shiny turd up in a lovely box and rip off its loyal customers, you know, those that have put them on their mighty pedestal 😉..

My MBP Retina is the worst bit of Crapple equipment I have ever owned..

I also have this problem since upgrading to iOS9 and it is very frustrating. Neither 9.0.1 or 9.0.2 have resolved it

I've tried resetting numerous times, turning off dial assist and resetting (which seemed to work for a short time but then the problem returned), turning iMessage off/on, turning MMS Messaging off/on, resetting my network settings and many more suggestions from other threads on the internet, all to no avail

I would also like to add my voice to the people affected. Mine is doing it sporadically as well, just showing numbers on my notifications, but names in the message thread. I've tried clearing my contacts and re-adding them using iCloud - it doesn't seem to cure it.

And for the record, I have an iPhone 6 and am on the EE network - so definitely not restricted to any one network.

It may well be worth having a thread somewhere where people can just comment yes to this issue, just so we can see how many people are effected, 90% of people I know on IOS9 are having this issue, even those who bought their new phones new with IOS9 installed. It does however seem to be effecting those who upgraded the most. Makes me think Apple are at it again, upgrade your phone and turn it into a brick. I would love to say if they aren't careful they will fail, but a company this size and wealthy, it will never happen 😟..
