Text message notifications on iOS 9 not recognising contacts

Since upgrading to iOS 9, any text message notifications seem to appear with the number rather than a contact name, but if i open the message app they are listed against the correct contact name.

This means that no custom text notifications are working either as the notification doesn't seem to be able to link the number to the contact record. It seems to work for iMessage, but anything sent as a normal text comes through as a number not the stored contact. I've tried the usual - reboot, switching off dial assist etc, but none of that has made a difference. I've also tried making sure the contact record has the same format as the number showing in the notification (e.g. with +44 in front) but that hasn't helped either. Can anyone help?

I tried almost everything mentioned above. Finally, I edited the contact for just one of the phone numbers affected within my iMessages by adding a +1 to the beginning of the number. Went back to my Messages app, and all names had reappeared.

Maybe this will work for someone else? Soooooo frustrating! And weird.

I am on three and I have the same issue. Certain contacts I get the name - certain contacts I get number in notifications.

The contacts I get a number as a notification, they are a mix of iOS 9, 9.01 and 8.4.

it seems therefore it is on my side (ios9.0) on the receipt of the message rather than the sender.

Very very frustrating. When updating to a major upgrade, I did a full restore and update so I am not sure why resetting the settings will fix this issue.

Any ideas?

I have been having the same issue both with iOS 9 and iOS 9.0.1. I am in the UK on Vodafone. It seems like everyone reporting the issue (at least on this thread) is also based in the UK. I wonder if it is a UK specific error - maybe with recognition of the country code?

I have submitted a bug report feedback form to Apple but I have no idea what the likelihood of that being picked up and actioned is. Has anyone had any luck from contacting Apple Support?

Thanks

I have an iPhone 6 16gb and unfortunately the problem restricted to the UK. I am in Phoenix, AZ and unfortunately I have had issues with incoming text notifications as well. It works one text then not another. Texts even coming from the same person. I get no alert tone and then I will. Seems to have no rhyme or reason. Also have issues when typing a text as sometimes there is a grey overlay with a 0:00 timer to the right side and cant see the text box underneath. I am seriously rethinking my alleigence to apple and considering "UPGRADING" to an Android device

Sadly not. Within 5 mins of installing 9.0.2, I get a txt from my wife, and the notification is just a number again... I've turned off contacts on icloud and switched it back on again, will see if that has an effect and post back! Strange though, it doesn't seem to happen with every number, or every time, I can't see a pattern. Still annoying though....

I have the same issue. In my case it seems that text messages work fine, but iMessages do not display the contact name in the notification. They are showing with the correct name within the Messages app, but if the same contact sends me a text and an iMessage the notification shows the name for the text, and shows the number for the iMessage.

It's really frustrating!

For the record I'm having the same issue since the iOS 9 upgrade with text messages not displaying the name of random saved contacts.

iPhone 6 128GB giffgaff, iMessage turned OFF.

It's completely random. My gf's name comes up but most of my friend's names do not. But bizarrely I saved the number of a plumber 2 days ago who was coming round to fix the water meter and when he text me his name came up! So I thought maybe contacts that were already saved don't come up but then my gf's number comes up, totally weird.

Everyone is now saved as +44, upgraded to iOS 9.0.2 but no improvement. Another thing to note is that I have separate custom text ringtones for individual friends, family etc and because the phone is not associating the number with the contact I am not hearing that custom tone when they text but instead the default tone for general texts. Whatsapp is fine though.

I've started to find it amusing now - play a little game where I try to guess who text what from the lock screen. But that's just because I'm slightly weird! Harder than I thought!

Just tried turning off/on MMS Messaging, let's see if that works.

I also have this same problem on EE, I have tried numerous "Solutions" but nothing works, been on to Apple UK gone through numerous 'Resets' still same problem even tried deleting contact and adding new Contact from unknown sender number still the same problem, very frustrating as it is from the people that text me most, I have Iphone 6+ on 9.0.2 Hoped it would be sorted by now as only started on IOS 9.0.0 update

I have the same problem. I've been following the various threads on it and have tried the following: deleting a contact and then manually adding them back in; deleting all contacts from my MS Exchange e-mail addresses (iOS really doesn't get on with Microsoft); toggling the MMS button in Settings on and off; signing out of iCloud, deleting all contacts from my phone and then signing back in; rebooting the phone (several times). However, none of this has worked. It seems to be the same contacts where there are issues. I've reported it via Apple bugreporter but merely got a reply a few days later directing me to the online chat support. Didn't bother with that! This is clearly an iOS9 bug and it's driving me insane. What is the point of all the clever new features if the phone won't even work as a phone!? This thread alone has had over 2000 views and the bug is not confined to the UK; that gives me some faint hope that Apple will realise and fix the problem. However, I've noticed that iOS9.0.2 hasn't seemed to have fixed the issue of iCloud back ups crashing (mine hasn't auto backed up for months - but that's a whole different set of issues...) and that since installing iOS9 reminders only occasionally appear in the notification screen, although they do appear in the lock screen. I think Apple have got this latest iOS update wrong: it's riddled with bugs and problems. I'm certainly not changing to a 6S (even though I have a 5 that's struggling to cope now): I have a phone that doesn't work properly so why spend twice as much on a new phone that doesn't work properly but slightly faster!? I'm becoming tempted by Android, I have to say. At least it seems to work. Hope this is of some help/interest. Fingers crossed that they sort it out. The slight worry is that the 6S has been such a massive success Apple don't need to worry about a few hundred users with bugs... I guess we'll see.
