ios9 update -> now touchscreen problems

Ever since I updated to ios 9, my iphone 5s touchscreen is acting crazy. The accuracy of where I touch or slide vs. what the iphone thinks I did is completely off. The phone seems to have a mind of its own too, it starts opening apps and stuff when I'm not even touching it. Then other times it freezes completely for 5-10 minutes. It is nearly impossible to shut it off because it won't swipe when I initiate the turn off screen. The home button works fine. Every once in a while the phone will act normal for like 15 minutes and then it goes crazy again!! Anyone else?? This just started a couple days ago after I did the ios 9 update.

Hi beecccca,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the iPhone can't be powered off and the touchscreen is opening apps on its own. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch - Apple Support

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Cheers

This bug is getting patently ridiculous. My touch screen has been behaving erratically, particularly on the lock screen, for over a month now. To the point I can't even accept calls. iOS 9.1 did not fix it. Either give me the ability to revert to an older version that works, give me a new phone, or fix the issue please Apple.

This morning my phone's alarm didn't even ring! I was almost late for work. Seriously, now even this is not working?

I'm disappointed to hear that the new iOS is not fixing the problem. I didn't update it to 9.1 yet since people's responses seem to be poor.

I think we need to let Apple know directly how ridiculous this is getting. I heard that they might not follow/read this forum (Although interesting to notice that it has been moved from Hardware to "Using iPhone" - no, it is not the problem of how to use the phone. Unless it is how to use a broken phone)

I suggest going to this page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html and give them direct feedback. If enough people do it maybe they will actually do something about it. But honestly I am starting to lose faith in them. Still...worth a try?

My only suggestion so far is based on my own experience. Whilst I have an apple charger and cable i also sometimes use a cheap off brand car charger as well as another off brand micro usb to lightning bolt adapter. I have read that improper voltage can cause strange issues. I had noticed more screen related errors when using them but still, when charging a bit more with my proper charger it didn't really cure the issue. Today, however, I let the phone drain to zero, and then recharged from 0 to 100 with the proper charger and for the past few hours I've been issue free. Who knows if it will last but If you are doing a similar thing this would be worth a try!

No! I'm sorry TheGlobeSeries but this issue has nothing to do with off brand cables and chargers! It's purely an iOS9 problem. It's occurring across almost the entire iOS device range (any that support iOS9), only the 6s is safe and it only began after installation of new OS. Ive watched this discussion grow from 2 - 3 comments to over 120, this is a major issue and I wish Apple would be as loyal to it's consumers as we are to their brand and just fix this problem already!

I definitely agree that is an iOS issue because I was using the same charging scenario before the update without issue. I've also been following this thread since the beginning. What I'm suggesting is that perhaps there could be a correlation between the update reacting more erratic in response to off brand charging. As of now this is the longest I've gone without one hiccup (going on 7 hours) since 9 update and the only new thing is letting it completely drain and then charge with the proper charge to full. Still something might degrade but I thought it's worth mentioning 🙂 cheers!

Or maybe just the reset after the battery went to zero is helping. Maybe there's some kind of memory leak or other issue that manifests as you use the phone over time such that a full restart from dead battery resets the memory or other tables that are failing??

Though I'm on 9.0.2, I can say that at least my phantom screen presses have gone away 100% since I changed the accessibility setting under Touch Accommodations, Hold Duration to 0.25 seconds. No perceptible negative impact on human usage, but clearly the phantom presses are quicker than 0.25 seconds, and now aren't being registered by the phone! And therefore no auto-mute or auto-add-call during phone calls!

It's clear there are mutliple issues going on out there, but for some people, this trick might solve some headaches (while having no impact on user experience).

Hey guys I had same issue i guess the solution is the Touch ID configuration go to setting > click on Touch ID & passcode turn off first two options for Touch ID use which is iphone unlock & iTunes and appstore then you will see different it might not work for all but I hope it will solve the problem

Oct 23, 2015 2:17 AM in response to Alrayhi

This Touch ID disable not help for me. I haven't use anymore this option, because it's not work good for me with touch screen problem. I have still this problem. I think that this problem is Apple new features with iphone 6s screen calibration, which not work for earlier model, their code need this options if they want this touch screen working perfectly. Everything start after I updated ios 9.0.2. And it's so worse when updating ios 9.1. Iphone is so crazy now. Sometimes working fine, but then problem is here again and it can be here many times and a lot of time.

Since I saw one of my problems being listed as having been solved (Resolves an issue that could cause an incorrect unread mail count for POP mail accounts), I decided to download IOS 9.1. I had to try many times, for some unknown reason the update could not be installed, but I finally I succeeded. I am now very happy (hope it lasts), the email problem has been solved, and I can also use the alarm without freezing the phone.

By the way, I did try to use Apple's feedback option a couple of weeks ago: there was no verification that my message had been received, nor any response to my message, which is rather surprising. I did not expect such nonchalant treatment from Apple, which I until recently considered to be a serious company.

Oct 23, 2015 5:36 AM in response to Alrayhi

i agree completly. Apple company usually released ios for the last products and only checked and debug on those devices. ios 9 released for 6s and 6s plus then these problems are normal for iphone 6 or previous products. i hope apple solve touch problems soon. my touch problems getting better last days. i do not why but i have some problems yet but improved too without update to 9.1.
