ios9 update -> now touchscreen problems

Ever since I updated to ios 9, my iphone 5s touchscreen is acting crazy. The accuracy of where I touch or slide vs. what the iphone thinks I did is completely off. The phone seems to have a mind of its own too, it starts opening apps and stuff when I'm not even touching it. Then other times it freezes completely for 5-10 minutes. It is nearly impossible to shut it off because it won't swipe when I initiate the turn off screen. The home button works fine. Every once in a while the phone will act normal for like 15 minutes and then it goes crazy again!! Anyone else?? This just started a couple days ago after I did the ios 9 update.

Hi beecccca,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the iPhone can't be powered off and the touchscreen is opening apps on its own. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch - Apple Support

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Cheers

Final update:

It required a phone replacement.

I made the Genius Bar appointment, described the issues (of course the phone worked perfectly when I got there, but did start glitching after using it for a few minutes) and the tech went through the tests. He'd pretty much said that it was going to be replaced before I got through much of the explanation of the issues, which leads me to believe this is a known issue. Otherwise I'm sure they'd spend more time trying to make it my problem. I also got the statement that there were some iPhones that had issues with 9.x.x, so this isn't something Apple doesn't know about. Luckily I was still under warranty and the replacement was at no cost to me and handled quickly with no hassle. The replacement has no issues, 9.1 works exactly as it should.

Therefore I make this suggestion:

If you're under warranty, update to 9.x immediately and see if your phone has issues. If it does, get it replaced. If you're not under warranty, I would highly caution against updating until the "all clear" gets sounded. While not ALL devices are affected, I'd hate to be one of the few stuck with a glitching mobile until whateveritis gets fixed.

I have this issue also, iPhone 6 128Gb iOS 9.1 from November 2014 - turned it in for repair twice over the past two weeks, even with a video showing the issue - got it back with the note - could not find anything....What to do - the problem showed up again five minutes after setting it up as a new phone. I did´t install any APP´s.

Dont know what to do now, other than turning it in once again. The problem is that I will not turn it in with my setup - so I restored it to factory settings.

I did call AppleCare, because they call for me first in Sacramento. I told my problem and everything for apple support. They haven't know anything, only asking to me that I going to show my phone local Apple Service. I know that this is not help anything, I will get new phone, but I need to be without phone few days max. 3 days. And it's not help anything, because problem is only IOS 9. It's not working good old iphone. I think that Apple onky want every failure phone away from outside. They don't want to agree this problem.

This problem going more awful everyday, sometimes I need to restart my phone few times before I can do something. I can't answer phone always, because touch screen not recognize anything.

I Hope that they do something asap.

I had an iPhone 6+ 128GB that started showing these exact symptoms after upgrading to iOS9. After a Saturday morning of frustrating locking & unlocking and/or rebooting the phone at least 10 times with in 30 minutes, I had called AT&T support (I have AT&T's care package on my phone). They asked me to perform a factory reset, etc. In my opinion, AT&T has had many calls about this, as they were very familiar with my issue. In the end, they told me to contact APPLE support to get addition help and if they could not help me to call them back. So I called APPLE support about my OUT OF WARRANTY iPhone 6+. They wanted me to again to a Factory Reset. This time after the Factory Reset and at the SETUP screen, the touch screen stopped responding "HELLO" prompt. So I had to restart the phone just to setup the phone. APPLE told me it was a HARDWARE issue and wanted me to take it to an APPLE store to have the screen replaced for $150. Well, I called AT&T back, submitted a claim with them and got a Brand New iPhone 6s+ (for $99) as a replacement. After Set Up and Upgrade to iSO 9.1, I restored my phone from my backup. The next morning, I started seeing the same lag/freeze/COMA issue, however on the 6s+ it seem to come out of it's own COMA by itself. It's been 2 days with the iPhone 6s+ and only experienced the FREEZE issue the first morning I had it, but since then, no issue. However, the fact that I experienced the issue on a 6s+ tell me that it's not a hardware issue and that APPLE is not doing this deliberately to anyone that doesn't have an 6s phone, but related more related to iOS9. Of the people I know that have a iPhone 6/6s, they have not seen this issue. Time will only tell if they fix this, however, I read in these forums, that iSO 9.2 was coming out soon and was built for this issue.

Ive been mowing lawns for a couple of years now, and I finally got enough money to buy my iPhone, but guess what, of course! out of all things the one thing that Apple is notorios for, their touchscreen software and they completely broke it. Apple, you guys need to understand that there are people that actually have to work for what they buy. We try our best to be good consumers. Why don't you give us your best in return?

im having the same issue! Today i went to see if it was the screen that was the issue, whenever you ask someone whats wrong with it they tell you its the screen. After replacing the screen the same issues occurred and i got my money back from the screen. apple have told me to reset and restore my phone, i tried three times. My work relies on me having a phone and i actually have insurance on it yet vodafone (the worst company in the world) makes excuses even when its a software problem. Its already not good enough that the apple iphones are becoming more and more fragile with each "new model" but it seems that the software is screwing up regularly (almost every update) and to somebody who isn't so tech savy, they think its their fault and pay for apples mistakes. Not cool apple,

Hi All -

So I'm finally chiming in here as I've been having this problem with my iPhone 6+ ever since I went to iOS9.x (not sure what version) and it's been getting worse with each update since. I finally decided to contact Apple Support via chat and spent the next 2 hours updating my phone to iOS 9.x, deleting and resetting and the problem only got worse. Once the problem occurred I would have to reset the phone 4x until my touchscreen would respond to my attempts to bypass the lock screen. The tech even ran diagnostics remotely and said that both hardware and software passed. She then proceeded to give my the options to replace my phone or screen since I was 1 month past warranty, all of which would cost me $$$. I kindly gave her my two cents and told her I just want iOS 8.x back and we can go from there....

2 hours later I was at the Apple Store having the same conversation with the tech, he disappeared for awhile and said that he got special approval from his manager to get me a new phone (which I am currently updating and restoring from my backup) at no cost. He said this was a special situation but he has started seeing this problem with iPhone 6+. I asked him about iPhone 5's but said he hasn't run across this in the store.

This appears to be BOTH a software and hardware problem to me...reason being is when the phone was locked and the screen was unresponsive, he would slightly flex the phone as opposed to reset and suddenly the screen would be responsive. I don't recommend that this is a solution but went to prove that there is something wrong with the circuitry.

So far so good - but as mentioned above I'm just now restoring everything from backup. I had become so accustomed to picking up my phone after it had been sitting for awhile and having to reset it once or twice. If felt good having a phone where I didn't have to do that....albeit it's using iOS8.x and has none of my data or applications. Stay tuned.

There are an awful lot lot of people wt varying degrees of touch problems, since the IOS 9 update, while most users do not have touch issues. I don't know why, and won't speculate, but I find it really hard to believe that apple doesn't know why. I would bring in a print out, of the 16 pages, wt over 150 posts by users that also have problems, and demand a new device. I wasn't taken seriously by the geek squad, and had to pay $160.00 for a new iPod touch. Cheaper, yes, but why should a user have to pay anything when multiple users have also experienced problems, only since the update. When I mentioned this forum, they said that it must only be just filled people wt old defective devices. If I had a print out wt me, I could have shown them that it even also includes individuals, wt the iPhone 6. When is apple going to own up to this?

Still even though I could't get a free replacement device, I do want those who can get a refund, be able to. If you check this forum, some users have gotten free replacements, and if I were you, I would also try. With a net worth of more then 750 billon, they can easily afford to replace the defective devices, and keep their users trust.

Hi Ag,

I'm having exactly the same problem. I have a 128GB iPhone 6 plus....and have exactly the same symptoms after upgrading the phone software. It's intermittent, touch screen haywire, phone slow etc...it def seems a software problem. Nothing was wrong with the phono until I upgraded....I've always spotted a silver bar pocking in at the top occasionally.

Weird.
