ios9 update -> now touchscreen problems

Ever since I updated to ios 9, my iphone 5s touchscreen is acting crazy. The accuracy of where I touch or slide vs. what the iphone thinks I did is completely off. The phone seems to have a mind of its own too, it starts opening apps and stuff when I'm not even touching it. Then other times it freezes completely for 5-10 minutes. It is nearly impossible to shut it off because it won't swipe when I initiate the turn off screen. The home button works fine. Every once in a while the phone will act normal for like 15 minutes and then it goes crazy again!! Anyone else?? This just started a couple days ago after I did the ios 9 update.

Hi beecccca,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the iPhone can't be powered off and the touchscreen is opening apps on its own. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch - Apple Support

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Cheers

I went into the Apple Store and they told me they had only seen this problem in the iPhone 6 plus. They have changed touchscreens and the problem has kept on happening. Apparently they think it is a motherboard issue (all of these problems people ae having). They changed my phone for a new one under apple care and everything is ok with a new phone of course. It's a hardware issue...and it's not the touchscreen!

I had this issues for weeks now, freezing touchscreen was only the beginning. Two weeks ago there were phantom touches which were creepy and made me think I had a virus. This thread led me think iOS 9 was the reason, waiting for a fix.

Showing my phone at the Apple Store was not a success:

I couldn't demo my problems, everything worked normal. Plus I was out of warranty with my September 2014 iPhone 6 Plus.

but they did a touch screen check where I to play a "paint it blue" game to test the display. It showed some defects so they offered me a display exchange for 135€ But recommended trying a free repair by my provider (which turned out to be complicated/impossible after the first year of warranty).

The next week or so it got even worse, couldn't even take some calls because of the defect. I tried iOS 9.2.1 beta, did a complete reset, tried to deactivate some suspicious services mentioned here, no success.

I recognized that the problems occurred in situations where I had bad signal. The Apple Store was in an area with particular good signal. Back in the garage my phone went crazy again.

So today I went there again to let it get fixed, the test was repeated - no error this time but I insisted that it was a real problem.

4 hours later I got it back, no problems so far.

The apple technician told me phantom touches symptoms were always fixed by a display exchange, so no need to exchange the main board, too.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus which to date has been great. Based on my previous experiences with the iphones 4&5, I tend to wait for a long time to install any iOS upgrade on my phone as i have always encountered a few issues if I install straight away.

However, after installing the latest iOS update, 9.whatever, I am absolutely appalled that this iOS update was released. I spend half the time waiting for my iPhone to reboot as it keeps rebooting on its own, the other half of my time I have to reboot myself as the touchscreen does not work!!!!!!! Then when it does work, for instance, typing this message, the predictive text doesn't even work. For example, I start typing the word 'iPhone', select iPhone from the predictive text, but all it does is add a space after 'ip'. I shudder to think what other issues there are, so the plus side is I wont know as using my phone at the moment is limited. Then there double caps when texting, eg. ANdrew, then there is deletion of the last letter in the last word of a sentence when for example adding an exclamation, eg Bullshi!

But the biggest frustration I have is convincing my senior management staff to switch from Samsung to iPhone only for them to get their phones and experience the same ********. This is not acceptable!

PLEASE FIX THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was having the same issue. But they just replaced my phone. - I guess i got a nice person. I had been in the store previously while my phone was under warranty and they did not replace. I was 68 days past my warranty but I guess since they never replaced it the other times they figured this time they could cut me some slack. I was happy. But it ***** to have to go through all of this for the price we pay for apple products.

Yup me too, crashing iphone 5 with iOS9. I was using iPhone since iOS4, And this iOS9 is the worst iOS can be.

Honest.OK Apple 6s is nice, but please Apple i need my iphone 5 working.

I think the iOS Apple Software has gone to something uncontrolled bug problem due big size of the iOS 9 coding.

I mean this, problem, the ghosting crazy touchscreen!

the best way to get around without paying Apple for something new, is get the phone to DFU! seek on youtube.

Flash it as a new device. Dont restore the backup. Make sure all doc/photos was copied before DFU

But it will later happen as the memory filled up, and days iphone used.

Same problem here. My iPhone 5 had handled very well all software upgrades, so I had no reason not to install iOS 9. That's when the problems started: screen freezes, wrong applications open, etc. A couple of times, I even had some silly SMS sent because random letters were being written. Quite embarassing. It feels like the touches on the screen accumulate without working, but eventually the actions mix up and random things happen in the end.

I don't see why this would be a hardware problem and since my iPhone worked fine prior to the iOS 9 install.

Hi.. What if my Home button does not work? It hasn't been working for some time and I use the assistive touch on my screen. The rest of the touch screen does not work as of this morning. I can press and hold the Sleep Wake button but it does nothing but lock my phone. so now im stuck on my text messages and all a sudden my assistive touch doesnt return me to my home screen and siri aswers but does nothing. Unfortunately, my battery isn't draining fast enough so it can just reset on its own. I'm afraid though that once it's drained, it may never power back on.

So long story short, I can't power down or force restart my phone. Please help.

I have an iPhone 5s

Thanks, Lagani
