Apps Stuck Updating after iOS 9

I have noticed every day since I have updated iPad Air / 64G to iOS 9 - I find some pre-existing app stuck attempting to update itself. i have done some research and tried everything but it keeps happening. Only reboot iPad seems to clear it up until the next one gets stuck. Oddly enough others update fine, there is no rhyme or reason to which ones get stuck.

Anyone have any idea what's going on and/or how to fix it?

- thx

I'm sorry to report that I tried this fix today and once again tonight and it no longer works. Also I have 1.2 GB of free space so the theory of not enough space looks to be not an issue too. Either way this really need to be fixed! I'm tired of apps just deleting themselves when I restart the phone after they get stuck! why isn't anyone from Apple weighing in on this?

Yeah, this is incredibly frustrating and I find it curious that not many websites are reporting this issue. It is a pretty **** big issue.

Regarding Spotify, now it makes me wonder if the extra data is cache from album art, etc? Because now that I disabled the "Available Offline" feature it still stores some data (around 100 MB) although not as significant as it used to when I had it enabled.

So this is crazy, just on whim I tried to update one of the apps today that wouldn't update yesterday using the method I posted and it worked?! However the other one was deleted and I haven't even restarted the phone. So weird and frustrating! Apple I'm looking at getting a new iPhone 6S but this problem need to be fixed before I do!

I'm also experiencing this issue. I have an iPad 2 and apps haven't updated properly for months. I hate using it now because every time I go to use it there are scores of apps that are stuck on update. Why should have to fix this on a daily basis. It occasionally happened on my iPhone 5s but this week it is happening everyday. The final straw is one of my most important apps, my Barclays Bank app which use for my business banking refuses to update on my iPhone. I need to get a new iPad and was thinking of upgrading iphone but I'm really don't think I will until this major issue is resolved. Surely people at Apple are experiencing the same issue ie Mr Cook and co.

I'm experiencing this issue occasionally, so I feel your pain. One thing you may want to try for stuck apps, delete them from settings rather than the home screen. In my experience this works every time: Go to Settings>General>Storage & iCloud Usage>Manage Storage, then tap on each app that is stuck then click "Delete App." Note which apps you delete. Restart your phone, then go back to the App Store and re-install apps which you deleted.

Do let Apple know via feedback, Genius Bar, and any other direct support methods. http://www.apple.com/feedback/

That would indeed be the easiest way to delete apps - but be aware you are also wiping out the apps data - which equates to LOST DATA. Whether this data is recoverable (via cloud, etc) is entirely up to the app itself. In some cases deleting an app like this through settings will cause you to lose data you did not even know was stored locally until it's gone.

What generally do is notate whic apps are stuck, then force reboot the device. When the device boots again, the apps will just be gone from the springboard. All the other icons have shifted Etc. using your notated list, manually locate each missing app in the App Store and install. When the app reinstalls - it will actually pop back into its original location on the springboard and you will notice in most case the apps original data is intact. It's a ROYAL PIA but at least I don't lose data. Fwiw - I have tried all the methods of just rebooting the springboard (e.g. Bold font, etc) but they don't work for me. Only the full reboot with subsequent missing app works.

IS there any trick to finding out which app(s) have simply vanished?

I set several to update on my iPad Pro, and when I came back there were fewer listed as actually updated. I did not write down a list of which apps were updating, but if it was something important I don't want to find out the hard way--some future day when I go to use/play that app/game again.

The worst kind of data loss is loss you don't even know happened! But that's often what happens now... Apps simply vanish. Sometimes you may notice the "empty icon." Sometimes not.

I advise against doing any app updates until this is fixed. (I'd suggest updating through iTunes, but for me, that's also broken: says "you need 2GB and you only have 5GB"... Yeah.)

I've lost all trust in Apple products to keep my data and the files I create.

Greetings Morgan. I have found the best way for me to deal with this inconvenient situation is to update my apps manually so that I can watch progress each time and when I see an app stuck in the up date process I will note it, and then restart my iPad using the 'change too bold text' trick in Settings/general/accessibility which restarts your iPad somewhat faster than a hard reset, then going to the purchased section of the App Store, finding the app in question, which now has a 'cloud' icon beside it, tapping that icon and the app will then successfully reinstall. Hope this helps.
