Google contacts iOS 9 sync problem

Anyone else in here using google contacts and calendar with their iPhone?

I did some googling and apparently only changes you make on your iPhone are pushed instantly to your Google account. The other way around though, if you make changes on the web or from an android device, push doesn't work. So far so good.

I set fetch to manual because I'm pretty much adding calendar events and contacts 99% of the time from my iPhone. Calendar events sync as soon as I open my calendar app.

The problem is contacts.app. No matter what I do it just won't sync. The refresh button in the upper left corner does nothing. The only way I can force a sync is when I change something else on the iPhone. For example when I add another contact the little spinning wheel appears and it pushes the change to Google and at the same time it seems to fetch the changes I made on the web or on my android tablet.

I honestly can't remember if it has always been this way or if iOS 9 broke the refresh button in contacts.app

I am not sure if my experience is directly relevant. But here is what I did and it worked. My problem started also with loss of synching with Gmail Contacts & Calendar after upgrade to the latest version of iOS9. I trolled all the forums, but no suggestion solved it. Then, my suspicion began to develop around how iOS9 handles the 2-step security in Gmail. So, I did the following:

I deleted Google account on iPhone (mine is 5s.). I deleted CalDAV and CardDAV. I switched the 2-step verification OFF on Google. I powered my phone down. Then, I powered the phone up, installed the Google account, made sure I had checked Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, in the account setup process. Then, I launched the apps. It all synched fine.

Hope this helps.

So apparently, when they say Manual, what Apple really means is a Manual pain in your ***!

After a few tests I was able to fetch updates without actually having to turn off my device (Really?)

Here's what I did, but really, Apple needs to make this function better, otherwise just get rid of the Manual option all together.

My settings for Mail, Contacts, Calendars ... Fetch New Data are:

Push ... set to ... OFF

Gmail ... set to ... Manual

Fetch Schedule ... set to ... Manually

First Test: I made a change to my Contacts on my Mac running OS 10.10.5. Here are the results:

  • I'm already signed into Google Contacts on the Web ... Refreshed browser and the update was made.
  • On my iPhone 6, running iOS 9.0.2 ... Just opening the Contact app did NOT manually fetch the update. I had to: Go to Settings ... Mail, Contacts, Calendars ... tap Gmail ... tap Account ... tap in any field (Name, Email or Description) but don't make any changes ... tap Done ... Open Contacts.

Second Test: I made a change to Google Contacts. Here are the results:

I opened Contacts on my Mac ... I could see the Google server fetching updates and afterwards saw the change added to my Contacts app.

User uploaded file

On my iPhone 6, running iOS 9.0.2 ... Just opening the Contact app did NOT manually fetch the update. I followed the same steps in First Test.

I am having this issue also. Is everyone using 2-factor authentication on their IOS devices? I hadn't noticed this issue until I did away with the app specific passwords and put my iphone and ipad on 2-factor. Tried to put them back on app-specific to test my theory and was unable, since IOS 9.1 gave the thumbs down when I put an app specific password in.

I am also having this problem on my iphone and ipad - even after the update to 9.1. I find that it does update if I power cycle the device, my account is set to "manual" update.

These setting on my end do -not- result in changes to contacts made via the web being reflected on my iphone 6 (ios 9.1)

google account set up for mail/contacts/calendar as a new "google" account. This account is using two-factor authentication.

settings/mail, contacts, calendars/fetch new data = push/google account set to manual/fetch set to manually

I'm having the same problem. I had no issues prior to the iOS 9 update. My iPhone synced seamlessly with my google contacts both ways. Now, when I add a new contact in address book on my iMac, or when I add something in google, they both sync with each other, but nothing pops up on my phone. The only work around is turning off sync entirely, letting all the contacts be deleted from my phone, then toggling it back on to download them all again. Which obviously is not convenient. Apple please help!
