Verification failed : There was an error connecting to apple id server
After updating to iOS9 I can not sign into iCloud and restore my backup. Now I do not have access to anything on my iPad air. Any way to fix this?

This what I did to get it working:
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
Once it restarts, just re-input your wifi password. Go back into Settings and check ITunes & App Store, FaceTime, and iCloud to make sure that your Apple accounts are signed in.
Not sure what causes it but each time it does, I've reset the network settings and it resolves the issue.

Thank you so much! This worked for me.
Once I have signed in nothing comes up and the same (verification failed...) pops up I really would like an answer

I had the same problem and was trying to do erase all content and settings. It kept asking for password and not accepting it. I then tried just reseting all settings. And it worked.
Check the date and time on your device. My iPad Air2 was doing the same thing. I noticed the date and time zone was incorrect and as soon as I set it correctly the problem went away!
I ran into a similar probelm where for some reason, my ipad stopped being able to verify my apple ID credentials so I could not turn off find my ipad. After googling around endlessly for a solution of how to fix this I found out that there was a profile setting that was causing web certificate problems and not allowing my ipad to securely form a connection with the apple ID server. This is likely caused from opening a malicious link or clicking on a malicious ad. The easiest fix is to go settings -> general -> reset -> reset all settings.
*WARNING: Although this method works and will fix any network issues, including verification issues with Apple ID server, this will result in you losing any saved wifi passwords, wallpaper, ringtone, accessibility and any other device settings. The best fix would be to restore to a backup from a time when your device was working perfectly.
I hope this helps!
My Ipad is asking for my password as a verification code it is then saying there was an error connecting to the apple id server.
We have no iternet connection at the moment.
You know this sounds like a lot of voo doo to get a high tech item to work. I'm having the same problem getting my wife's new iPhone activated and I'm about ready to chuck it out the window and get her an Android. I've NEVER had this much of a problem doing something as simple as trying to restore a backup on an Andriod. What a joke.
didn't work, couldn't even sign back in
shame on apple , this is failure and we are all suffering off the very same problem what a stupid phone
My sons IPad was having the same issue. He had changed the date to get freebies from some game. when we corrected the date on the iPad, everything worked fine
