My iPhone stops playing music when taking photos?!

HI there...

My iPhone 6S seems to stop playing music both from iTunes or Spotify when I open the camera to take a photograph. I assumed there would be some obvious way to allow it to continue playing. It's a bit annoying to be honest! I just want to continue listening to my music whilst taking photogrsphs...

I can't find anything on the web... Or on here... Can't find anything on the phone... It didn't happen with my iPhone 5...

If anybody knows anything or has any idea if this is actually a design feature or just annoying I'd appreciate any advice!

Cheers! 🙂

Just wanted to add that I've noticed this happening a lot. I like to walk around a lot while listening to music and every once in a while I see something i want to take a picture of, so it's quite annoying. This also happens when you try to take pictures using Instagram. Someone here posted that they might be fixing this in a future update...let's hope this happens soon.

I just came across this issue: very annoying, especially because I always use the camera to take pictures while listening to music on headphones. So this is a major issue for me and I hope Apple will come with a bug fix (because IMO this is a bug) with the next iOS update. I don't want to consider that this is going to remain like this.

Keeping fingers crossed...

Hi all, I wanted to give you my final update. I returned my iPhone 6s and got my refund today. To see its not fixed in 9.1 just conforms what I suspected that it's not likely to be fixed I think. I suspect the new camera may use so much processing power that it has to pause the sound. i also had a number of other issues with the phone being buggy and bad battery life even with some features off that would cause that. Im also not a huge heavy user so that was an annoyance to barely get 12 hours out of thr phones battery constantly.

Im really a bit sad and frustrated that its come to this. Apple used to make really good products that just worked. In the past 2 years I think the software has become more buggy and the features are not that amazing for the huge premium that Apple charges. The cost for memory upgrades in the iPhone left a really bad taste in my mouth and just added to my final decision. The fact they also have nearly $200 billion in cash sitting in the bank because they don't pay taxes and use slave labour and causes governments worldwide to cut pensions because of this tax avoidance has also affected my decision.

To top it all off why has no one at apple tried to use this forum on an iPhone and realised they need to fix it so it can be viewed easily?! Why not an app even?

I'm so over apple now. Bring back Steve jobs or someone who cares again.

It really does suck. I just went on vacation and was walking around town. listening to some music, and wanted to take pictures and every time I switch the camera on the music stop. I understand that the camera is set to video or live photos, it should automatically stop the music, but non otherwise the way it used to be. It's a major thing for me. Please apple FIX IT!

Just updated to to iOS 9.1 hoping this would fix the music/camera issue but sadly no change. Went to the Apple Store where the assistant tried to restrain a knowing grin when I mentioned the problem - which he described as a 'feature'! When I ask what possible advantage this 'feature' could be to me he began to scrabble around within his scant knowledge to try and come up with something - but it looked painful so I put him out of his misery and left. Just off the phone from Apple Support with the same result - a lot of silence and little else. I can only suggest we all, as I have, fill out the feedback form as many times as we can - and in the meantime ProCamera app will be my default camera since it kindly allows me to listen to my music AND take photos (clever thing) until this is sorted. It's truly dumb.

OK, I have submitted feedback twice (once before the OS update to 9.1 today, then afterward when the update didn't fix it).

I also called Apple support and got a lot of silence and blankness before I eventually got bumped up to a "senior advisor," who actually asked for the link to this discussion and read the topic while we were on the phone, then forwarded his synopsis of the problem upstream to his engineers. He said that I can let you know that "Apple engineers should now be aware of the problem." Fingers crossed.

PS the ProCamera app (thanks for the suggestion chrisfromhove) does NOT have this issue, so that reassures me that it's not a hardware problem. Annoying to have to pay 5 dollars (and deal with the in-app purchase thing, which is distasteful to me) to have a usable camera, though.

I've also filled in a feedback form - and had two chats with support - one was a bit dismissive (took the 'it's a great function' line which annoyed me) - the second guy was a lot more helpful - concluded it must be connected to live photos and definitely software - according to him anyway. We agreed that having audio on live photos was a bit dumb anyway - a couple of seconds of background white noise doesn't add much! He too is filing a report so we may get there in the end. I also did a comparison and the ProCamera photos are of equal if not superior quality. Pain in the bum though .......

Hello

same issue here, called apple in Sweden and was directed higher up in the chain to a Senior Technical Advisor. At least something...

I'd really want this solved ASAP, no problems with either my 5s or my iPad Air.

Since i do a lot of street photographing with inspiring music in my ears this bug really ***** and if i knew of it i wouldn't have "upgraded" my iPhone until this got sorted.

Keep reporting to Apple people!

The more, the faster they hopefully solve this.

Greetings / Jocke

Here's an update: The Senior Apple dude phoned me back for some clarification of some details (at the request of the engineers), and over the weekend contacted again and I sent captured video from the phone (showing how the podcast stops playing when the camera opens) as well as the diagnostic logs from that session on the phone to Apple. So they do appear to be working on the problem actively.

Oddly, I am now able to use the camera whilst on a voice call - that was not possible before (the camera not working when on a phone call was the first part of this issue that I noticed). I haven't updated software (there haven't been any updates released) during the time the camera went from not working during a phone call to working during a phone call, so it's not clear how THAT happened.

But the main part of the problem persists: opening the camera (or most apps that use the camera - Instagram, Facebook, etc) will stop audio playback, even with Live Photo turned off.

Apple's on it, though, from what I have experienced with the follow-up from Senior Apple Dude! I expect an update will follow...

I feel the "stopping audio" while camera is open is foolish! I, too, go walking around, and love taking photos, and I do listen to music sometimes while doing so. What's funny, is that when I open Flickr and Snapchat's camera, the music DOESN'T stop, but because of the "Live" feature, that is as useless to me as the HTC EVO 3D's 3D camera was. The Live feature actually annoys me, and it just takes more space on your phone, when it's accidentally turned on, and when zooming in on the photos, it's annoying, as it tries to play the "live" portion of it depending on how you touch it.

PLEASE, Apple...put the option back on to have music while we take photos when "Live" is off! I don't see why you can come up with this ever so advanced technology, but can't simply give us the option to have the music while taking photos! It's like Costco making you select from one or two brands of a product to purchase, even though they have the power to sell ten different brands! Complying with this is irritable!

Completely agree. This is a standard feature since the first phone. Why go backward? I use it every day and it also fails to shoot when you are using phone apps like What'sApp, it pauses the call while you shoot. As I'm a photographer i see images all the time and if I happen to see one while jogging and listening to music I need this feature to work. No need for people to comment on issues unrelated to their needs, or limited worldview.
