My iPhone 6s home button is really hot and the device won't turn on

i have had my phone since Friday, and this morning when I woke up the home button was burning hot and the screen is just black. I went to bed with it working just fine last night, plugged it in to charge, and now it won't work. Nothing else is hot, not even the charging port, just the home button is on fire. I have had the phone unplugged for an hour and the button is still on fire. I had just made the choice to switch from a Samsung to this iPhone and need to say it makes me slightly regret my choice because I have always known that apple products have tons of issues. I an not happy that I have had this phone for less than 5 days and this is happening. Anyways, is there anything i can do to fix it without having to go into the apple storeI did not finish setting up my iCloud, so to lose all of information because of a defective phone will not make me happy.

Just had the same problem on 6s 64gb. Phone was working fine all day. Went to use the phone and it wouldn't power up, just a dark screen, and a very hot home button. I called Apple Support. They ran remote diagnostics and found nothing wrong. At their suggestion I held down the power button and the home button and the phone powered back on normally after about 10 seconds. I thought it might be an overheat due to the new case, but in researching overheat situations I saw that a triangular symbol should have popped up as a warning. The phone itself didn't feel hot, just the home button.

This morning I woke up with the same issue. I have a 64gb iPhone 6s+ that is running iOS 9.1 on the public beta. It was working fine last night and then this morning it wouldn't turn on and the touch id was extremely hot. I was using an Apple issued iPhone charger and the phone didn't have a case. After finding this forum I did the home+lock screen button and my phone revived. The home button was hot enough that I had to use something to shield my thumb while I held it down for 10 seconds. If this was a one time thing it's not a big deal, but if this becomes regular it seems like it could be potentially dangerous and it could potentially ruin some of the electronics in the iPhone. I'll update this if it happens again.

Just had this happen to me. Was not being charged at the time. Went to pick it up before heading to bed after a long night of studying to the peculiarity of the screen not turning on. Pressed the home button and was surprised by the scorching temperature. Nearly dropped my phone on the floor (luckily it was over the desk still). No recognition by the phone of plugging in the charger. Hard reset by holding down the Home and Power buttons worked for me (15 seconds here).

Same issue happened with me this morning. I have had the iPhone 6s 64GB Rose Gold for about two weeks now. Plugged my phone to the charger at night and this morning there was a black screen and the home button was burning. Initially I thought there was an issue with the charger or the phone cover but realized the entire phone was cool except the home button. After researching this forum, I realize others have had the same issue and rebooted my phone by pressing the home and power button simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds. Phone restarted and the home button immediately cooled down. Very disappointed with Apple - for the price us customers are paying for this phone, this issue should not be happening. Hoping this doesn't happen again, otherwise I am taking it back to the Apple Store.

64GB iPhone 6S Plus

Setup as new phone

Running iOS 9.0.2

I had the locked screen, warm home button issue mid-day yesterday while trying to wake up the unplugged phone. As others have stated, I was able to clear the issue with a hard reset. Afterwards I called Apple Support. After arguing with a low-level support person who wanted me to wipe the phone, I was transferred to the Safety department due to the hot home button. After interviewing me in detail about the circumstances under which it happened, that person told me the issue is being tracked and a software fix is in the works. She couldn't provide a timeline, but I'm guessing we'll see the fix in 9.1.

My iPhone 6s shut down while sitting on my desk unplugged and 90+% charged. The home button was hot to the touch. I tried to power on and reset with home/power buttons multiple times over a 1-1/2 hour period but could not get it to power up. Spent an hour trying to establish contact and then talking with Apple Senior Advisor Support rep (my call was escalated due to "safety" issue because of "hot button"), only to be told Apple had no record of having this problem reported before! (I "went on record" to say that the Apple discussion forum clearly indicated this is a problem and got dissed by the rep about you can't believe what you read on the web!). All the Senior Advisor Support rep did for me was to refer me to take my phone to the local independent Apple dealer. When I got in the car, the A/C was running full blast so I held the phone up to the air vent, and it cooled off enough so that when I went in the store it powered right up with the home/power reset. I think this is definitely an overheating problem causing the phone to shut down. The best thing we can do is contact Apple every time it happens so they are forced to recognize the problem, and give the phone a little cool air....

Same issue here. iPhone 6s 64GB rose gold that's 7 days old on iOS 9.0.2. The phone was on my nightstand facing up overnight, not plugged in, with close to 100% battery. When I woke up it wouldn't turn on. After a couple minutes of pressing and holding down the buttons, the home button felt like it shocked my thumb so I yelled "ow!" then pulled my hand away. Then the home button started to get hot. I found this forum and held down the home and power button for 10 seconds. The Apple logo appeared and it started up. The home button cooled down after that. I contacted AppleCare and the diagnostics showed nothing wrong. They had me speak to the safety department and documented everything. They're going to have me take it into the store so someone can look at it.

Hi everyone,

I've experienced that same problem as being reported here by many. I have a iPhone 6s (128GB) and it's been working fine for the past week and yesterday I installed the latest update to iOS 9.0.2 and everything this worked fine.

Plugged the phone in to charge last night after setting my alarm. The morning the alarm went off as scheduled but 20 minutes later the iPhone was no longer working (black screen) and the home button was extremely hot.

Using the Home button and power button down for approximately 10 second forced a restart with the Apple logo and within a minute the home button was cool again and everything appears to be working fine.

Happened to me too. It was the middle of the night. The iPhone 6S sitting on the night stand, but not plugged into the charger because it was still at 88%. The dog woke me up, and I touch the Home Button to check the time... Ouch - the button was burning hot and the screen was black. I couldn't get the phone to wake up, and the button was getting hotter and hotter. At 2:30 am I called Tech Support and they said to press the Power and Home button at the same time. That fixed the problem. The screen started working and the Home button cooled off. But it worried me. What would have happen if the dog hadn't woken me up? Would the phone have gotten hot enough to catch something on fire?

Apple is sending me a new phone.

I got a 64GB Silver iPhone 6S on launch day. Had the issue of the hot Touch ID after about 5 days, similar to everyone else. Went to bed with the phone around 80% (not plugged in). Set an alarm and it didn't go off in the morning. Picked up the phone and Touch ID was burning hot, black screen and no buttons working. Did the Power Button/Home combo thing for 10 seconds and it restarted no problems, although battery was now at 43%. Called Apple, set up a Genius Bar app. and took it in 3 days later. Genius said there were no diagnostic issues at all, just said to monitor the situation and keep and eye on it. FYI, I set this up as a brand new phone, so I can't imagine it being related to any dodgy settings being carried over from an older phone.

Just yesterday, on day 13 since purchase, the phone did it again just sitting on my desk (not plugged in). I decided to return it to the Apple Store yesterday for a full refund. I then purchased a NEW 128GB Silver iPhone 6S and will monitor it to see how this next one goes. Not going to risk being stuck with faulty hardware, if it is indeed the case.

Interestingly, the original phone had the SAMSUNG A9 chip, whereas my new one has the TSMC A9 chip. No idea if that will make a difference, or whether there are people here who have experienced the issue with both chips, but just thought I'd mention it. As some of you may have read, it seems the TSMC runs cooler than the SAMSUNG chip. Will keep you posted on any issues I experience with the new phone...

Same problem with my 6S. It had abut 30% battery and suddenly turned off. Totally unresponsive and black screen, but the home button was burning like fire! I pushed the home button and the power button simultaneously for about 12 seconds and the phone comeback to life. I have it for less than 10 days. I am an Apple fan and I'm costumed for its quality products, this one is disappointing however, hope they can fix this issue for good promptly. This is the second time since my first iPhone back in 2008, that I have faced a problem. Hope this is helpful...
