no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

I just installed El Capitan and the first thing that I have noticed is that the normal sounds that apple mail puts out do not come out of the speakers. iTunes works fine but not then mail sounds. Any help would be appreciated

I have altered the "path" to that of my own sound file (running the code from within the editor would not work otherwise!), but the Script (even with "Stop" added) still plays several times and therefore gives an echo effect. It might be due to the wav file I'm using being a little longer in duration than a simple "Bing", but it's still a little strange. Still, I now have a sound (of sorts) to announce the arrival of incoming mail so slowly getting there.

When I boot from a clone that is still running 10.10.5 and Mail 8.2, everything is hunky dory. I know that you are trying to help, but it looks like we need a higher level of support to resolve this issue. It has been reported, several times, over a long period. How can we get the attention of someone that can and will actually get to the bottom of this problem?

I tried all the suggestions from Diane (and please, I'm not beating on you Diane, in fact, thanks so much for taking the time to post a very detailed explanation of steps to take). I'm one of the lucky ones because I get a sound for "new" email and one for sending email but I'm missing one that's key for me, the "no new mail" sound. The sounds were working perfectly prior to El Capitan and suddenly stopped working after the update (including the change of the new mail alert to the standard one from El Capitan, it didn't even leave the one I had set myself)

  1. Created a separate user, created a new mail account, same sounds, nothing fixed
  2. Used the guest account, created a new mail account, same sounds, nothing fixed
  3. Downloaded the complete El Capitan OS installer, installed it over the previous one, no changes, still the same thing

While appreciate the input for scripts and rules, etc that some people have provided, I'm just shaking my head with disappointment. If I wanted to tinker with quick fixes and bandaid solutions for an operating systems until they got it right, I would own a regular PC and use Windows. I'm tired of trying stuff and since I'm one of the lucky ones that at least gets the "new mail" sound, I will consider myself lucky and just give up. Maybe in a couple of years when Apple comes out with The Admiral or whatever they name the new OS, they will have fixed this issue.

I understand files get corrupted, I understand operating systems have bugs and they get fixed with subsequent upgrades, I understand that nothing is perfect. However, I also believe that Apple has made a name using the trust of its users, a trust in a superior product for which a premium price is paid. That name was backed up by their responsiveness to the users' input when there was something wrong. In this case, neither the product itself nor the response from Apple has been even close to "superior." In fact, I would call it lacking, disappointing, and pathetic. Lesson learned...

I tested in a new User with a POP account. There are no sounds with POP. I changed the POP to IMAP and I got sound.

Is this Apple's subtle way of pushing users to IMAP? Who knows. It seems the only workaround at this point is to use a rule as others have described.

You need to report it to Apple Feedback so it can be logged and put in the queue to be fixed.

I suggest all users look at moving to IMAP if possible. Most hosts now offer IMAP as an option. If anyone needs help with setting up as IMAP, please report

I think here we actually agree on something. It is interesting that iCloud mail is an IMAP account, and I also was beginning to think that Apple had decided no longer to fully support POP accounts. I will report this 'bug' once again, as they don't seem to be listening?

There are many reasons why IMAP accounts are very very unsuitable for a lot of email situations. If indeed Apple is (like with optical discs) "imposing" full functionality in IMAP ONLY accounts then it is time to look for another email application that will perform the way we all seem to want it to...

That said I think Apple would simply make public their stance on IMAP only accounts rather than be so underhand as to 'break' their software. More likely this is something in the core of mail coding (or a conflict in some users' preferences folders). I hope they fix it soon. In the meantime I will report the issue through feedback regularly to see if there is any kind of reaction for a little whil e.. if not I will look at other mail clients - there are plenty and not massively expensive... It's just irritating to not really get what one has already paid for - seems to tbe the way of technology companies these days - they have most of us by some rather sensitive bits of anatomy...
