no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

I just installed El Capitan and the first thing that I have noticed is that the normal sounds that apple mail puts out do not come out of the speakers. iTunes works fine but not then mail sounds. Any help would be appreciated

1. Let me ask you this: Do you have text under your "New Message" in email?

Compose windows no longer allow you to add icon and text. I dislike this myself. Report it to Apple Feedback so it can be logged and put in the queue to be fixed. http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

2. Here might be another for you.

Do you have any Flagged emails?

Yes, I use Flags extensively.

If so, are there any that are Unread?

I have 133 flagged emails and the Mail program says that all are Unread even though they have all been read and do not have the blue dot next to them.

I can even add a new flagged email and it says it is unread even though I just read it.

I didn't have the unread issue, but I did have some flags reset to red. Total PITB to reset correctly.

If the flags are set properly, you can create folders inder "On My Mac" (red flags, blue flags etc). Copy not move the messages into folders. This will give you a backup in case resetting FlagMailboxes.plist looses your assigned flags.

Let me know if this helps with your flag unread issue.

Your profile doesn't even mention anything about what Apple computers or devices you own.

Why is that?

Just checked my profile and there is no place to add hardware now. I have an iMac Retina 5K (fusion) with 16GB RAM

I also have an old 2006 iMac that runs Snow Leopard. Busted monitor and have to screen share to even use it.

Looking more at your profile, you don't appear to have a POP email account?

POP accounts seem to be the ones with no sounds and other problems at this time.

I have no POP accounts. I have 5 IMAP and 1 Exchange account.

Have you tried adding an IMAP account to see if it works with sound? You can easily add your iCloud account for testing. Go to System Preferences > iCloud and add an new iCloud account if you don't already have one.

I am NOT asking for help.

"If the flags are set properly" REALLY?

How can they be set UNPROPERLLY?

Good luck trying to stuff things down these members throats.

This is an update problem.

Otherwise, show us your screen shots of New Message with the text.

What computer you are using.

When you bought it etc.

There are lots of different variables here.

Not just it works for you............

The flagged messages could be showing the wrong color for flags. The update broke several of my flagged messages by resetting to red.

I'm trying to stuff anything down your throat. I've only tired to suggest options to fix.

I did not say that new messages had text. I said it was no longer an option to show icon and text and to send feedback to Apple.

Good idea to employ Script but for me it has one problem, namely it triggers the sound for every email so you get an echo effect if receiving multiply incoming mails at the same time. The built in sound method (when working) seemed to only trigger on the first incoming so avoided this issue - looked through Rules to see if something could be added to stop this but not sure, currently trying "Stop evaluating rules" at end of "Perform the following actions" section but I'm not hot on either Script or Mail Rules usage so it's touch and go!

Any ideas on how to make the rule for first incoming mail only?

HI Diane,

I finally got around to trying your suggestions...

I installed a new version of 10.11.1 on a different hard disc and set it as the start up disc. I created a new user and added one of my mail accounts and sent an email from another computer. Still no incoming mail sound. As I understand your post this would indicate a problem with the base files or did I misunderstand?

If it is the base files of a new installation on a new disc to me this would suggest a problem with the installer from Apple ?

If I misunderstood and I need to reset the files in my user folder would you mind going through the procedure for POP accounts please (assume I would need to copy the mailbox folders somewhere)

many thanks

peter
