no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

I just installed El Capitan and the first thing that I have noticed is that the normal sounds that apple mail puts out do not come out of the speakers. iTunes works fine but not then mail sounds. Any help would be appreciated

I have two POP accounts. No MAIL sounds.

But when I did the update to 10.11, and later 10.11.1, I noticed that Apple duplicated those two accounts as IMAP accounts.

I switched over to the IMAP accounts, and deactivated the POP accounts, and was immediately notified that it could not connect securely.

But I sent myself an email anyway--whooosh--and then "Mail Truck!" (my sound) announced the arrival. OK so far.

I tried to delete that email, and a popup said it could not delete it, because the (null)TRASH did not exist.

So I reactivated the POP accounts, and deactivated the IMAP accounts, and back to full functioning, but, as before, no arrival sounds.

Hope Apple fixes this for using POP accounts..

If your ISP offers IMAP you do not have to contact to setup. You remove your POP account then add it back as IMAP.

Not all IMAP accounts use secure settings. Apple will set all IMAP accounts using secure settings. You will have to edit those settings to connect.

There are two places to uncheck.

Incoming: In the main account window under Advanced, check "allow insecure authentication".

In SMTP settings under Advanced also check "allow insecure authentication"

Yes, if you contact your ISP you will easily be able to find out whether they support IMAP. I simply entered my ISP name and IMAP into google, and within seconds a page came up showing all available settings for my provider, including POP and IMAP details for that server. There was also a mini screen invitation to a live screen chat, where I was able to verify that it was simply a question of deleting POP and re-entering the new settings for IMAP. Your email address will remain unchanged. Whilst I've no idea as to whether all ISP's offer this same availability, it's certainly worth a try.

Personally, I'm going to wait for the next software update to see whether Apple is going to fix this issue, as I prefer the simplicity of my POP account, with an Inbox/Sent/Trash, rather than my Gmail account ,which I rarely use. I don't need Starred/Spam/Important/Bin/Personal/Receipts/Travel/Work, etc, although I appreciate that some others might.

All this for a simple 'Bing' which most people here are unfortunately missing. Think I may be able to live without it, but it's the principle that's in question. If things don't work as they should, then complaints are necessary!

Hi,

I found that in MAIL PREFERENCES under the GENERAL tab, there's an option for NEW MESSAGES SOUND - It showed 'NONE' I used the pull-down menu, set it to "NEW MESSAGES SOUND" and made sure that the box for "PLAY SOUNDS FOR OTHER MAIL ACTIONS" was checked and now I have the Basso sound I have always been used to hearing. It worked for me so might be worth a try. I also reported the problem to Apple via their feedback page.

Yes, you certainly have to have Message Sounds selected as per your screen shot, and it's definitely worth pointing out. Unfortunately, there are many users who have tried every possible option to remedy this problem, to no avail. I have just checked the Reviews for El Capitan on the App Store, and to date there are 58 five star ratings, as opposed to 111 one star ratings for the latest update. Not all reviews mention e-mail difficulties, but many of them do.

I think that this speaks for itself!

So, IF I decide to switch from POP to IMAP on my Mac(, what do I do about my iPhone and iPad? I see that my Mac now shows an IMAP account and my POP account, with the IMAP account not enabled. It looks like some simple editing of the account details in the IMAP account would be all that's necessary since they don't match the settings in my POP account. I assume that if I switch the incoming port number will auto-switch (995 for POP 993 for IMAP), or do I have to manually edit there?

I am so engrained with my POP acct, I'm not sure that I'd ever get used to an IMAP acct. But, never let it be said that I'm too much of a dinosaur to give it a shot. My main concern is that I keep the lion's share of my inbox posts, and all the posts in other on my Mac mailboxes. I like to be able to reference old posts from time to time, and I'm not sure how IMAP fits into that. Yes, I suppose that I could delete a boatload of old posts in my inbox without too much suffering, thereby reducing the count from a few gazillion to a much smaller number. But I need all of the stuff in the other mailboxes, not counting Trash. ;o)

What happens to the posts that are currently in my various on my Mac mailboxes if I switch from POP to IMAP? Do they disappear?

A lot of the folks I know use IMAP, and are amazed that I don't. My take on that is that they need to accept that I'm amazing. Is there a chance that they're right, and I'm not? :-I

As I haven't attempted this myself yet, I'm very loathe to advise you as to how you might proceed.I know I suggested that a POP account could be deactivated, but obviously you would not want to do this until you're sure that the IMAP account is working, and that you are able to transfer the e-mails that you already have. So, in this case, I think I'll leave it to others to advise you further. I would only say, as obvious as it sounds, don't deactivate anything until you're happy that everything is safe. I've read that many users have lost most or even all of their mail following the update, or when tinkering with accounts. So proceed with care, and good luck!

* I wouldn't worry too much about syncing with your iPad/iPhone until you've sorted out your Mac, though........

My post wasn't aimed at you in particular, Mike. I just used your post as a jumping off point, and it was directed at everyone in general. I know that reseting or Macs come first, and the iPhone/iPads later, but I want the entire solution in front of me before I begin.

Diane has said the problem might be in our Users folder, even giving directions to find it, but she never said what to do when we get in there. That's not really a place to go stomping around in unless you know exactly what you're doing, which is why Apple made it hard to find in the first place. I'm just not confident enough to move forward with the limited info that I have, so I wanna see the whole picture ahead of any action on my part. The last thing I wanna hear is "Sorry, we didn't know THAT would happen, you should'a blank blanked instead"
