no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

Thanks but, unfortunately, the word "None" does not appear under "Check For New Messages" in Mail for El Capitan".

Actually "None" is under new messages sound and not "Check For New Mail". I presume I misunderstood your suggestion. I'll do some further tests and cross my fingers. Thanks again

Still no luck with what you kindly suggested.....it's now over to Apple.

Well, rather than waiting for the fix, I backed up what I currently had & restored Yosemite from Time Machine. Unfortunately the last time I backed up to Time Machine was back in May - oh well, no big deal. At least Mail is working like it is supposed to now, all sounds are working. Will wait until Apple has a fix before I go back to El Capitan.

The popup is under "New Message Sound" not "Check for new messages". Sorry about the mixup.

Following reporting this issue on Apples Bug Reporting site a few days ago received a request this morning for additional information, so it appears someone is aware and working the problem.

One thing which might work...

I had this problem in Yosemite too and found that after I'd used Soundflowerbed to capture some audio into Audacity, the sounds in Mail returned. After I'd installed El Capitan the sounds in Mail disappeared again.

I opened Soundflowerbed.

Opened System Preferences and set the sound output device to Soundflowerbed.

Opened Audacity and recorded some audio from an online radio station.

Closed Audacity.

Closed Soundflowerbed.

Opened System Preferences and set the sound output device back to Internal speakers.

Waited for mail to arrive.

None did.

Put the iMac to sleep.

Forgot about it.

Started the iMac today.

Checked for mail, sound played on receipt of new mail. Yay!

Worth trying? Not all steps may be required?

I have 3 accounts 2 pop and 1 IMAP. I noticed that when receiving mails from IMAP account the sound and notification works always ok. However when receiving mails from pop accounts sometimes I receive the sound but not the notifications, the notification but no sound, or no sound and no notification

I am having the same problem. When I send mail I hear the 'swoosh' but when I receive mail I hear ........ nothing.

Apple have acknowledged that there's a bug. One wonders why, with all the extensive beta testing, nobody noticed this !

One can ask that about any bug that manages to get into a product release, stuff happens. IMO, what is important now is the measure of how long it takes to correct the errors.

Hi all, only thing that worked for me was going back to Yosemite 10.10.5. More stable, everything works just fine, my battery last for about 5 to 6 hours in a Macbook Pro Mid 2012 that I bought 2 years ago. With El Capitan, not only no sound for incoming emails after upgrading, but emails were not shown in Mac Mail (I had to find where they were and import them) and my battery dies in about 2 to 3 hours .

Just received the following from Apple Bug Reporting:

"Engineering has determined that your bug report (22970215) is a duplicate of another issue (20998385) and will be closed."

So hopefully a fix is in the pipeline.

Just stumbled over a possible workaround. My main mail account is connected as pop3. I have another one that I rarely use as an imap account. I noticed that I sometimes hear the familiar incoming mail sound. As it turns out it comes from that imap account. Also when I make up an imap account of my regular email address the sound is back. So, it probably is a pop3 related problem. A temporary imap account may help until the fix is there.

I am finding exactly the same: my Gmail IMAP mails come in with the sound; my POP3 emails come in with ...... silence.

Not everyone has an IMAP account. Some of us use POP only, for reasons of our own. This issue of a lack of audio alerts in Mail is one that Apple has caused, and one that they need to fix ASAP. We are now going on three weeks, and no solution yet.
