Q: Does MS Office 2008 work with El Capitan?

Yes it fires up. YMMV

No.  It will not install from CD/DVD for me.

My office 2008 is not working, it wants me to register it which is no longer possible(?). The software update comes up and a screen asking me to register office, which takes me to generic office support website. Anyone know how to fix this issue?

I installed El Capitan and guess what? Both Excel 2008 and Word 2008 fail on starting up. I updated MS Office 2008 to the latest version, but no change. Currently struggling with Pages and Numbers!

I did the same (Yosemite to El Capitan standard upgrade), different outcome. It remains a mystery.

Was on a prior version at the time of the El Capitan upgrade, I then upgraded MS Office to 12.3.6 to see if that solved the problem. It didn't. I'm now waiting to see if anything emerges from MS.

I have MS Office 2008, and I can open the various programs just fine in El Capitan.

I have the same issue. If there's no fix I might have to revert it back to Yosemite.

I spent about four hours on the phone being transferred from different helpdesk's in Apple and then to Microsoft and then back to Apple. Basically, Microsoft no longer supports office 2008. Consequently, they don't care that it doesn't install.   Microsoft  wants you to buy a subscription to their new office service. Apple also doesn't care, it's not their software. So here we are, stuck with software we paid for that we can no  longer use. Which is unfortunate, because office 2008 is more than most people will ever need regardless of  all the bells and whistles in Microsoft's newest version.

Try the following:  boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk. Reboot normally and try again.

It's not working. I will try to use Page and Number and see if I can deal with that.
