Huawei internet dongle not working in El Capitan

My friend updated to EL Capitan yesterday (1st Oct) to the official release version of El Capitan. He uses an Internet Dongle/fob/adapter (that connects to a cellular network) to connect to the internet.

He had no issues with it while using it in Yosemite, but after the update to El Capitan it is not working.

I have checked the Internet dongle with other computers and it works fine. therefore I believe the issue may be with Java thats running on OS X 10.11

The internet dongle being used is a Huawei E173. It is working on a 3G GSM network in Sri Lanka (Dialog Axiata).

Any workaround this would be great.

As far as I can tell I already have v 23.015... so not sure if outdated software is the problem.

As usual, when inserting the stick a new window opens with the supplied Mobile Partner icon. It is the software package with the driver originally supplied with the stick. Clicking this icon either installs the Mobile Partner software coming with the stick on the local disk or it launches the Mobile Partner app installed on the Mac if the Mobile Partner software is already installed.

My issue is when I insert the dongle nothing happens - no new window opens and although I have installed the mobile partner software, the app doesn't launch automatically when I insert the dongle. The indicator light on the dongle goes on but Finder does not recognise it, and Mobile Partner only gives the disconnected/ unavailable message after I manually launch it. So my laptop is still not recognising the device automatically.

Went into network preferences and am now trying to add the dongle from there. Not sure if I'm being stupid but it is now asking me for an account name and password which as far as I'm aware I have not been given: User uploaded file

Have tried this with both *99# as I've read elsewhere and the mobile number suppled with the SIM. Advanced settings:

Here I have also tried:

With APN as both mobitel or mobitel3g (different sources say different things online). But either way, with the actual number or with *99# it tries to connect then fails:

Not sure if I'm missing something obvious here or just have the wrong settings?

Hi Guys,

I run in to this problem too with my old E122 locked to Three Ireland (doesn't really matter which carrier it is locked and actually it doesn't really matter if it's locked or not);

There's a very nice, official software on Huawei website that is not well advertised for obvious reasons (Huawei makes contracts with mobile carriers so it would be against a good partnership; still, it's there and we should use it - that's my opinion 😉)

To cut it short - tested on El Capitan 10.11.4 - works like a charm even with different APN profiles etc.

Go to: http://m.huawei.com/enmobile/consumer/support/ (or just navigate to global Huawei website and ensure you're in Consumer section, then go to support).

Find Mobile Partner for Mac 10.11 and download. It's a very good software, mobile carrier independent that allows you to create multiple profiles (if you know the relevant APNs) and use different SIMs from different cellular networks if your modem is unlocked;

What's best - it picks up default APN settings over the air so probably most of you will have it working "off the box".

My example: E122 bought locked to Three/3 IE about 7 years ago, I was about to throw away; decided to try to unlock it and did it today; couldn't make it to work with my Vodafone SIM but the blinking LED was showing blue which meant it picked up proper network; I tried different ways, even the one from this thread with no success, until I went to Huawei and picked this Mobile Partner; it connected straight away even if I didn't put any Vodafone settings - it just worked 🙂

I tested that with second, private APN and it flies like a charm.

Hope it helps.

[Oh! It doesn't really matter which model you choose, select something similar to your dongle - mobile partner is just a generic software so it works with different devices. My E122 wasn't anywhere on Huawei website...it is so old 😀)
