El Capitan - This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with "name@email.com" - is occurring frequently with my new installation of the OS

I upgraded my Mac Book Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) to OS X El Capitan (Version 10.11) yesterday, and now I'm getting frequent iCloud error messages:

This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with "myusername@gmail.com" Open iCloud preferences to fix this problem.

I had the same problem with my Macbook Pro after the upgrade to El Capitan. It turned out that the problem I had was not with El Capitan but with the Kaspersky virus software I was running. Kaspersky was blocking it because it seemed "new" to it. I turned off Kaspersky, logged in to iCloud without a problem and then turned Kaspersky back on. Working fine now! Good luck.

I'm having the same Keychain problem. I try to enter the correct Keychain password then get the error message that there's a problem signing into iCloud but then that password isn't recognized. I keep having to force quit Keychain to even get it off the screen. Another problem is my keyboard sound buttons have stopped working....what's with that?

I'm having the same problem. This is getting very tiresome Apple. I switched from Windows to Linux because I was fed up with exactly this sort of nonsense with updates and upgrades. I switched from Linux to OS X (at considerable expense) because I was fed up with having to configure and resolve issues myself - but right now I am wondering whether I should have stuck with Linux?

How can you upgrade an OS and break a fundamental service within it without realising?

Never mind us fumbling about trying to fix this, where is the Apple fix / update??

I still has this issue, tried every suggestion out there, logging out of iCloud, erasing files, disabling two-step authentication. Nothing worked.

I had to reformat the drive and reinstall Yosemite to gain access to my iCloud resources. What kind of a joke is this? Especially when I realized that the issue was present in the beta stage since June or earlier.

I will stick to Yosemite until they fix this.

I tried as one person suggested starting my Mac in "safe mode" this seemed initially to work, but upon re-starting my machine it was back to same problem with being "there is an error connecting to the Apple ID server"

This problem only happened after I upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan, earlier in October(2015).

What worked for me was to use "Time Machine" and revert back to a previous time in September when I was using Yosemite. It did warn that you will loose things after this back-up date, but in practice once done, just about everything re-loaded from i cloud so was not a problem.

The following is from Apples instructions to revert to a previous OS X version

To do this restore, make sure your back up drive is plugged in then from the apple menu (top left) select restart. After your Mac restarts and you hear the startup chime (or just buzz) hold down the command and R keys, when the apple logo appears you can release the keys.

Select "Restore from a Time Machine backup then click continue.

Select your time machine back-up disk (or external hard drive)

Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. To restore your computer to the state it was in before you installed the new version of OS X , choose the most recent back-up that occurred before you installed the new version.

Follow the on screen instructions.

I agree this is very bad, and reminds me of Microsoft Windows problems, I will not upgrade again to El Capitan until these problems are fixed.

I solved my problem by logging in through Internet Accounts (right next to iCloud in system preferences) rather than iCloud. As soon as I opened internet accounts it asked me for my password and when I entered it, it was accepted, whereas when I went through iCloud it would get hung and I would have to force quit system preferences. Once I logged in through Internet Accounts, I opened iCloud and I was already logged in successfully there (did not have to re-enter my password).

For the record, I had already tried booting in safe mode, deleting iCloud files in the application support folder, logging out and back through the App Store and many other purported solutions.
