Q: Wake on Excessive Wake drains battery on sleep

Ive been having this problem where my computer drains to 0% battery overnight when in sleep. When I'm connected to my router/wifi, the computer never sleeps, wakes up multiple times a minute, and drains all battery. See a sample below:

Turns out, a bunch of people in this forum have had this problem. I've tried everything suggested. Turning off Wifi before sleep WORKS so i figured it was a problem with the computer. But..it seems that me and a few other people have come to this conclusion: Its a problem only with certain routers.

I tested to see if this is my router by leaving my Wifi ON, and unplugging my router. It sleeps fine with Wifi ON and router OFF. So its the connection between the router and the computer that is doing this.

its a Time Warner Router.

Im posting this so Apple is aware of the issue. Has anyone found a fix?

I am experiencing this exact same issue. Macbook Pro 15 Retina purchases 30 days ago. I close my lid and at night and then 8 hours later the battery will go from 90% to 2%

And this is posted in my logs every few minutes:

Can you isolate the issue to your router? Does it happen at other locations or just at home?

How can we get apple to notice this?

Right now I am at a hospital for the next week. I am going to try when I get back home on my wireless at home. It looks like the hospital uses a Cisco Meraki Router of some kind. My guess is that is it might be trying to constantly connect.

You can see on page 7 in this thread many people have found it to behave differently depending on the router. rMBP 2015 Wake Reason: ARPT (Network)

Turning off wifi before going to sleep to prevent the problem is annoying and this is definitely a bug, but I have to turn off/on my wifi every time my macbook sleeps anyways so its a habit i got in anyways...

I did some test. My Mac sleeps well in my university wireless area. But the moment I go back home, my Mac starts to wake up every minutes. Then I just delete the wifi configration of my router and left my laptop unlinked and wifi-ON for whole night. The battery is still 100% in the morning. So I can say for sure this is all about the wifi connection with particular router.    BTW, my router is Dlink N300

And last night I erased my disk and didn't install the OS. With wifi-ON, the battery was 100% in the morning. So, it's OS level bug.

    Hello All,

I have the EXACT SAME problem: battery drain while on sleep unless wifi is off.

    Macbook pro mid 2015 model, El Capitan;

When i was still on Yosemite I had no problem at all. When I updated to El Capitan the sleep issue started. Here is what I did with no positive outcome:

    - Wiped the computer and installed El Capitan again

    - Reset the SMC (you don't need to worry about what this is)

    - turned off wake on wifi in the power saving settings.

    - My mac is still on warranty so I took it to the apple store here in Munich, Germany. The apple specialist did some diagnostic by connecting it to their server and the outcome was NO HARDWARE ISSUES at all. The specialist said it must be your router especially that we tried to make my MBPr sleep at the Apple store and it did!!!

I hope that this will make you guys feel better about it especially that you are not alone in this and that we are sure now about this not being related to the hardware. We might now need to wait for a EL Capitan update. I hope it will get this hassle solved.

I have tried to reinstall the OS without logging in my Apple ID, no problem at all.

So it must be an application level issue, not OS level.

My router brand is LevelOne, unknown model.

No, that was just a test.

I have logged in now and have to turn off wifi every sleep, to prevent battery drain.

This link is cool. I made a service and mapped it to a shorcut so when i hit Control + ~ it toggles wifi.

How to create shortcut to turn on/off Wifi in Snow Leopard

I have Macbook Pro 15 inch Mid 2015 with El Capitan. I have tried many of solutions mentioned above (except reinstalling the OS) recommended by an Apple Care senior adviser and they all didn't work. However, one of the solutions that he suggested may have solved this issue - deleting 3rd party extensions in /Library/Extensions. You can find those extensions in System Profiler, which could be found in Spotlight. So far, my computer doesn't wake up even when the Wifi is left on and the computer put to sleep. Let's see whether this would work over the next few days.
