Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

El Capitan and IPhoto??

So, I updated my system to El Capitan and LOST IPHOTO?? What is up with that? I can't even find my photos that were on IPHOTO.

I tried to update and the Apple Store tells me it's NOT AVAILABLE!! I use IPHOTO for my business, and now I'm DEAD IN THE WATER!!!

Anyone have a solution??

Hi, sbermon! Do you work for Apple or in the tech area? Just wondering. If so, then I can understand your slant because, obviously, the company needs to upgrade and update to keep ahead of competition and certainly Apple is known for innovations and for moving forward.

If you don't work for Apple or in that industry then consider the fact changing technology also means that the products we all use will become obsolete and that we, the consumer, will always be encouraged to upgrade and buy more or buy newer. But there is a segment of society... for example.... me, a senior citizen.... who is not interested in changing too much. As I said before, my photo storing needs were met with iPhoto. Now that Photo doesn't meet those needs, this consumer is looking for other ways to store my photographic memories. Until I find the program that works best for my needs, I'll be putting my pictures onto Photos, moving them onto jump drives, then dumping them from the Photos program.

Vy the way....I admire the messaging in "The Handwriting on the Wall." This poster could easily go on the Teacher's room door in any school or into letters home to every parent in the US who is upset over the changes from Common Core!

I don't think anyone minds change. I was a PC guy from 1985 to June of 2011, when my son urged me to buy a MAC.

I was EMBRACING change at that time. I bought the MAC because I wanted to work on transferring home movies from VHS to DVD, and heard that IMovie and DVD Maker was the way to go. Also I maintain a website and weekly change out as many as 400 photos at a time. Here again, I heard IPHote was the way to go!!

Of course there was a learning system with ANY new computer or operating system... and obviously I was able to adapt over the years considering I went from a 1985 with DOS and continued on through the "Windows" of the world into the 21st Century!

Where I have an issue is when they upgrade an IOS and then stop supporting the software they USED to support, and leave guys like me hanging. I only have so much time during my day, and now I have to stop and not only learn a new operating system, but now have to learn the software that goes with it, or in the case of DVD Maker, wasn't replaced with anything, and have to find a NEW software to replace it.

At first glance... PHOTOS does NOT seem to operate as smoothly as IPhoto. For example, in IPhoto when I want to crop, I would just create a square around the object and it would CROP... NOW, it won't let me do that, but I now have to physically move the corners of the box to CROP... MUCH more time consuming, especially when you are editing 400 photos.

WHY can't they the GOOD stuff alone and enhance it??

MolieJP -

I'm not sure how to put this, but Apple has no competition.

... and I'm unaware of a release of software that ever met with everyone's criteria and expectations,

... and don't forget it was a free upgrade.

You use Time Machine right? So just roll back to wherever is comfortable.

Senior to senior.

I know that Apple are no longer supporting the programme. The point is that you may be able to get iPhoto working again, as many people have

if you follow the instructions that were posted to you earlier. You have said that you don't like the new Photos app so I posted a link to a post that

may help you get iPhoto back working on El Capitan.

Bit late to this particular party but let's try and clarify some things:

1 they are no longer supporting IPHoto! so you can't update the program

Incorrect. They are no longer developing the application. That's not the same as support. They continue to support it and yes, if you have a version of iPhoto 11 already then you can indeed update it.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

So you can continue using iPhoto if you prefer.

As for the capabilities of Photos:

It has more powerful and more varied eating tools than iPhoto. It has pretty much the same organisational tools - not quite the same and the paradigm is different (Moments v Events) but the real organising too - Albums, Smart Albums, Keywords and so on, are pretty much the same.

Some other points:

2. With iPhoto I was able to head each entry of photos using TEXT. I gave every batch of pictures an identifying heading followed by the date.

You can do that with Albums in Photos, like you could with Albums in iPhoto.

3. With iPhoto I could put text underneath every photo. Basically, my pictures in iPhotos became diary entries.

Yo can do that with Photos too.

4. With iPhoto I could easily move photos from their original position into different areas. That made it very easy when I gathered photographs to make a book for this same grandchild. These photos all went into a single heading which was the name of her story... "The Little Chestnut."

Which is exactly what Albums are for, and in both applications

But the point is that you don't have to change. Stick with iPhoto if you want to.

It's a sad story, Barney-15E, and a reflection of my own stupidity.

We're a 2-Mac family. My dh has one with a larger screen that he uses for his art work/paintings. He had been after me for a while to update my computer from Maverick (I hadn't even updated to Yosemite) and kept telling me how much he liked El Capitan. My computer was running slowly; he said it was because of all the "junk" I had on it ... mostly my grandson's gaming & music apps/videos, etc. I spent a few days cleaning out all his stuff and organizing, deleting from, and notating pictures in iPhoto. Then I said why not update to El Capitan?

Stupid part >>> I never looked at his computer to see what the total package of El Capitan was like! When I opened Photos and saw what I now had, I sat there and cried.

We spent a few days trying to recapture iPhoto. There's no way I can get iPhoto back for all the reasons that others have explained. I actually don't mind change and have been exploring Photos, but it really doesn't work in the way that I would like. Primarily, there should be a way to incorporate text into the "heading" of each entry of photographs and to move photos from one grouping to another. For me, it's much easier to find photos using words rather than dates.

Terence Devlin, thanks for all your input. I went through your suggestions.... the last one, "Make albums" is fine from this day onward. I'm concerned about the lost text data for past photos (from 2003-now).

App Store: there isn't an iPhoto ... v9.6.1 App ... in my purchases; it's not hidden either.

Applications: the "iPhoto App" has a cross through it with the suggestions that "the version of iPhoto installed on my Mac is not compatible with OS X El Capitan. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store." The response when I follow the link is that "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."

Dumping El Capitan and reinstalling Mavericks... scary activity.

Yes, I did back up all my iPhoto pictures before installing El Capitan.

Yes, I've started creating "Albums" with new photos I import to the program and I use text. But this "Abum-making" should be an option as I enter new photos instead of being an additional step. I know I can always use Picassa, etc., for new collections.

My hope is that Apple revamps Photos. I love my Mac but this Photos program is convoluted. A former art professor used to say:"Simplicity is the keynote of good design."

What version did you have?

. But this "Abum-making" should be an option as I enter new photos instead of being an additional step.

When you import snaps to Photos they turn up in your Last Import heading on the left hand side of the window (just like with iPhoto)

In Last Import try this:

Click on one.

Go commando-a, that selects them all.

Go command-n, that makes a new album with all the photos and asks you name it.

Result a new Album with your text.

As for older ones, don't you have a folder there called 'iPhoto Events'?
